Carbon and nitrogen isotopes and concentrations in terrestrial plants from a six-year (2006-2012) fertilization experiment at the Arctic LTER, Toolik Field Station, Alaska.

The data set describes stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes and carbon and nitrogen concentrations from an August 2012 pluck of a fertilization experiment begun in 2006. Fertilization was with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Fertilization levels included control, F2, F5, and F10, with F2 corresponding to yearly additions of 2 g/m2 N and 1 g/m2 P, F5 corresponding to yearly additions of 5 g/m2 N and 2.5 g/m2 P, and F10 corresponding to yearly additions of 10 g/m2 N and 5 g/m2 P. After harvest, plants were separated by species and then by tissue. Tissues were then dried, ground and analyzed for stable isotopes and concentrations at the University of New Hampshire stable isotope laboratory.

Plant and root biomass, nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus were measured in 2015 in the Arctic LTER tussock tundra experimental site (MAT81). This site was established in 1981 and has been harvested in previous years (see Shaver and Chapin Ecological Monographs, 61(1), 1991, pp.1-31, https://doi.org/10.2307/1942997). Data tables include the biomass for each harvested quadrat and block summaries for percent carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus for control and fertilized plots from the original 4-block design. New control plots, established in 2015, are in a separate data table and include biomass, percent carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus for each quadrat.

Point-frame measurement of maximum canopy height for plant growth forms at the 2007 Anaktuvuk River Fire scar measured in 2019.

This file contains maximum plant heights from point frame measurements made in the southern section of the 2007 Anaktuvuk River fire scar, at a severely burned site and a nearby unburned site. Pin-vegetation contact was recorded using a 0.56 m2 frame with 41 evenly spaced sampling points. Data were collected during peak green in summer 2019. These data were used to examine the impact of post-fire changes in plant community composition and structure on habitat suitability and rodent herbivore activity in response to a large, severe, and unprecedented fire in northern Alaska moist acidic tussock tundra.

Phenology of flowers and leaves following experimental warming in the initiation and maturation years for 7 understory boreal plants at the Bonanza Creek Long Term Ecological Research (BNZ LTER) site in Interior Alaska: 2017-2019

This dataset contains the results of experimental warming of flower and leaf buds for 7 understory boreal plants: Rhododendron groenlandicum, Rosa acicularis, Rubus chamaemorus, Shepherdia canadensis, Viburnum edule, Vaccinium uliginosum, and Vaccinium vitis-idaea. Plants in two cohorts were subjected to one of four treatments: warming in the initiation year (the year prior to flowering or leaf-out) only, warming in the maturation year (the year of flowering or leaf-out) only, warming in both years, or no warming (controls). The timing of flowering (both cohorts) and leaf-out (usually one cohort) was monitored. We also tracked developmental stages of the flower bud primordia using repeated desctructive sampling followed scanning electron microscopy throughout the initiation years. Environmental data associated with the plots, including air temperature throughout the summer, soil temperature and depth of ground thaw in late May, and canopy cover, are also reported.

Regional drinking water quality monitoring program: long-term monitoring of water quality in select canals, reservoirs, and treatment plants of the greater Phoenix, Arizona metropolitan area drinking water system, ongoing since 1998

Regional Drinking Water Quality Monitoring Program ================================================== Arizona Statue University (ASU) has been working with regional water providers (Salt River Project (SRP), Central Arizona Project (CAP)) and metropolitan Phoenix cities since 1998 on algae-related issues affecting drinking water supplies, treatment, and distribution. The results have improved the understanding of taste and odor (T&O) occurrence, control, and treatment, improved the understanding of dissolved organic and algae dynamics, and initiated a forum to discuss and address regional water quality issues. The monitoring benefits local Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) by optimizing ongoing operations (i.e., reducing operating costs), improving the quality of municipal water for consumers, facilitating long-term water quality planning, and providing information on potentially future-regulated compounds. ASU has been monitoring water quality in terminal reservoirs (Lake Pleasant, Saguaro Lake, and Bartlett Lake) continuously from 1998 to the present for algae-related constituents (taste and odors, and more recently metals from the upper reservoirs), nutrients, and disinfection by-product precursors (i.e., total and dissolved organic carbon and organic nitrogen). Additional monitoring has been conducted in the SRP and CAP canal systems and in water treatment plants in Phoenix, Tempe and Peoria. During this work the Valley has been in a prolonged drought and recently one above average wet year, and this data provides important baseline data for development of new or expanded WTPs and management of existing WTPs in the future. The current work has improved the understanding of T&O sources and treatment, but additional research and monitoring into the future is necessary. Reservoir monitoring is conducted once per month at Bartlett Lake, Saguaro Lake, and Lake Pleasant, and quarterly at Roosevelt, Apache, and Canyon Lakes. Quantitative and qualitative aspects of dissolved organic carbon leached from plant biomass in Taylor Slough, Shark River and Florida Bay (FCE) for samples collected in July 2004

Plant biomass was collected from Taylor Slough, Shark River and Florida Bay in Everglades National Park. Samples were taken to the lab and incubated with Milli-Q water in the dark for a period of 36 days. NaN3 was added to half the bottles to test the role of microbial activity on the leaching rates and composition of leachate. Every three days the water was decanted and replaced with fresh Milli-Q water. The decanted samples were filtered and analyzed for DOC concentration, sugar content, and total phenol content.

Water, Soil, Floc, Plant Total Phosphorus, Total Carbon, and Bulk Density data (FCE) from Everglades Protection Area (EPA) from 2004 to 2016

These data are a compillation of data from multiple sources including South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) DBhydro web database, United States Environment Protection Agency Regional, Environmental Monitoring and Assessment (REMAP), Everglades Soil Mapping (ESM), and Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research (FCE-LTER). The matrix of these data were compiled for soil, surface water, floc, and plants where the nutrients are counted for total phosphorus, total carbon, and bulk density. When downloading the data from DBhydro, only regularly collected samples (SAMP) were included these data. As per DBhydro metadata, the regular samples were collected monthly by grab method throughout the year from 2004 to 2016 for SFWMD monitoring stations across the EPA. All flagged and field quality controlled values were excluded to avoid the duplication of data. In order to maintain the quality assurance/ quality control (QA/QC) the method detection limit for water TP was fixed at 2 µg/L by the SFWMD. This data set were used to assess the decadal trend of TP concentration in surface water and soil in EPA. Available data from 2004 to 2014 was collected for soils and from 2004 to 2016 for water to understand a decade of trends. Both Geographic Information System (GIS) and statistical data analysis were applied to determine changes in water quality and soil chemistry. These data are the basis for Shishir Sarker's Master's thesis.

A quadrat survey was conducted in October 2007 to measure the species and size distribution of plants at 10 GCE LTER sampling sites. The quadrats were established as permanent plots at GCE sampling sites in October 2000 by placing wooden stakes at random locations across two nominal zones at each site, designated based on marsh structure (creekbank and high marsh). Several new plots were also added in October 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 to replace those lost due to catastrophic wrack disturbance or creek bank erosion. The plots were visually surveyed and the species, shoot height, and flowering status was recorded individually for each shoot over 10 cm in height present in each plot. Observations from plots exhibiting signs of disturbance were noted in the data set with additional details recorded in GCE data set PLT-GCEM-1801. This survey will be repeated annually to assess changes in plant distribution and biomass in relation to environmental changes documented by other GCE LTER monitoring efforts.

GCE-LTER Altamaha River Plant Community Monitoring Survey in October 2012

A quadrat survey was conducted in October 2012 to measure the species and size distribution of plants at 3 sampling sites on the creekbank of the Altamaha River. The sites were chosen to capture the transition from Spartina alterniflora to Spartina cynosuroides (site SCSA) and the transition from Spartina cynosuroides to Zizaniopsis miliacea (sites ZSC1 and ZSC2). The quadrats were established as permanent plots in October 2012 by placing PVC stakes along the creekbank at each site. Plots were evenly spaced, but were not randomly located because the goal was to start with mixtures of vegetation in most of the plots, and vegetation was distributed in patches along the creekbanks. Therefore, these plots provide useful measures of vegetation change, but are not a random sample of the vegetation at the site. Plots will be replaced as needed in future years to replace any lost to disturbance. The plots were visually surveyed and the species, shoot height, and flowering status was recorded individually for each shoot over 10 cm in height present in each plot. Observations from plots exhibiting signs of disturbance were noted in the data set. This survey will be repeated annually to assess changes in plant distribution and biomass in relation to environmental changes documented by other GCE LTER monitoring efforts.
