The Colorado River Delta and California's Central Valley are critical regions for many migrating North American landbirds

<p>Migration is an important component of some species full annual cycle. California's Central Valley and the Colorado River Delta provide important riparian and wetland habitats for migrating waterbirds in the arid west of North America, but little is known about whether these locations are important at the population level to migrating landbirds. We used eBird Status and Trends abundance data to quantify the importance of the Central Valley and Colorado River Delta to landbirds by estimating the proportion of the breeding population of 112 species that use each site during migration. We found that ~17 million landbirds use the Colorado River Delta in the spring and ~14 million in the fall. Across four study regions in the Central Valley, up to ~65 million landbirds migrate through in the spring and up to ~48 million in the fall. In the spring and fall, respectively, up to 37 and up to 30 species had at least 1% of their continental population migrate through the study regions. We also quantified the spatial concentration of each species across latitudinal transects to determine the extent to which study regions were acting as migratory bottlenecks.  Landbird abundances were spatially concentrated in study regions 29.4% of all migration weeks, indicating that each study region acts as a migratory bottleneck. This application of eBird data is a powerful approach to quantifying the importance of sites to migrating birds. Our results provide evidence of population-level importance of the Central Valley and Colorado River Delta for many migratory landbirds.</p>

Pre-Delta-X: River Discharge Channel Surveys across Atchafalaya Basin, LA, USA, 2016

This dataset provides river discharge measurements collected at selected locations across the Atchafalaya River Basin, within the Mississippi River Delta (MRD) floodplain in coastal Louisiana, USA. The measurements were made during the Pre-Delta-X campaign on October 15 to 20, 2016. Seventy-five channel surveys were conducted with a SonTek RiverSurveyor M9 acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) on selected wide channels (~100 m) and a few selected (~10 m) narrow channels. ADCP data provide near-instantaneous estimates of river discharge across the sampled channels. Sites coincided with AirSWOT swaths in the Atchafalaya River Basin and water level measurement locations. This in situ dataset was used to calibrate and validate Delta-X hydrodynamic models.

Delta-X: Land Subsidence Rate, Mississippi River Delta (MRD), Louisiana, USA

This dataset provides estimates of land subsidence rates for the Delta-X domain area within the Atchafalaya and Terrebonne basins for 2021. The study area is a portion of the Mississippi River Delta in coastal Louisiana, U.S. The total subsidence is calculated as the sum of deep and shallow vertical elevation change rates. The deep subsidence rate is based on information from the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) of Louisiana, documented in the Phase-4 subsidence trend report prepared for and provided by CPRA (2022). The shallow subsidence is calculated for the Delta-X study area by interpolation of publicly available data provided by CPRA for their coast-wide estimation of shallow subsidence in the 2023 Coastal Master Plan. The total subsidence rates and the estimated uncertainty in the total subsidence rates are provided as separate files in cloud optimized GeoTIFF (COG) format at 30-m (0.0003 decimal degrees) resolution.

ABoVE: Wetland Type, Slave River and Peace-Athabasca Deltas, Canada, 2007 and 2017

This dataset provides ecosystem-types for the Slave River Delta (SRD) and Peace-Athabasca Delta (PAD), Canada, for the time periods circa 2007 and circa 2017. The image resolution is 12.5 m with 0.2-hectare minimum mapping unit. Included are an 18-class modified Enhanced Wetland Classification (EWC) scheme for wetland, peatland, and upland areas. Classes were derived from a Random Forest classification trained on multi-seasonal moderate-resolution images and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery sourced from aerial and satellite sensors, field data, and calculated indices. Indices included Height Above Nearest Drainage (HAND) and Topographic Position Index (TPI), both derived from a digital elevation model, to differentiate between land cover types. The c. 2007 remote sensing data were comprised of early and late growing season Landsat-5, ERS2, L-Band PALSAR from 2006 to 2010 and growing season Landsat thermal composites. The c. 2017 remote sensing data were comprised of early and late growing season Landsat-8 and L-Band PALSAR-2 from 2017 to 2019, Sentinel-1 June VV and VH mean and standard deviations, and growing season Landsat thermal composites. Elevation indices from multi-resolution TPI and HAND were created from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Advanced Land Observing Satellite 30 m Global Spatial Data Model. Also included are the images used for classification and the classification error matrices for each map and time period. Data are provided in GeoTIFF and GeoPackage file formats.

CMS: Aboveground Biomass for Mangrove Forest, Zambezi River Delta, Mozambique

This dataset provides several estimates of aboveground biomass from various regressions and allometries for mangrove forest in the Zambezi River Delta, Mozambique. Plot level estimates of aboveground biomass are based on extensive tree biophysical measurements from field campaigns conducted in September and October of 2012 and 2013. Aboveground biomass estimates for the larger area of mangrove coverage within the delta are based on (1) the plot level data and (2) canopy structure data derived from airborne LiDAR surveys in 2014. The high-resolution canopy height model for the delta region derived from the airborne LiDAR data is also included.

CMS: Mangrove Forest Cover Extent and Change across Major River Deltas, 2000-2016

This dataset provides estimates of mangrove extent for 2016, and mangrove change (gain or loss) from 2000 to 2016, in major river delta regions of eight countries: Bangladesh, Gabon, Jamaica, Mozambique, Peru, Senegal, Tanzania, and Vietnam. For mangrove extent, a combination of Landsat 8 OLI, Sentinel-1 C-SAR, and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) elevation data were used to create country-wide maps of mangrove landcover extent at a 30-m resolution. For mangrove change, the global mangrove map for 2000 (Giri et al., 2010) was used as the baseline. Normalized Difference Vegetation Indices (NDVI) were calculated for every cloud- and shadow-free pixel in the Landsat 5 TM, Landsat 7 ETM+, and Landsat 8 OLI collection and used to create an NDVI anomaly from 2000 to 2016. Areas of change (loss or gain) occurred at the extremes of the cumulative anomalies.

Pearl River Delta FVCOM model sea level rise scenarios

Z. &quot;Future interactions between sea level rise, tides and&nbsp;storm surges in the world&#39;s largest urban area&quot;, Geophysical Research Letters (2020).</p> <p>An FVCOM (Finite Volume Community Ocean Model) implementation for the South China Sea and the Pearl River Delta is used to understand how future sea level rise, tides and typhoon storm surges can interact and affect coastal inundation. Four future sea level rise scenarios have been analyzed: 0.3 m, 0.5 m, 0.9 m and 2.1 m. Two typhoons that impacted the PRD have been modelled: Hato (2017) and Mangkhut (2018).</p> <p>The dataset consists of water elevation data for 40 model experiments:</p> <ul> <li>EXP01-10 allow to study tide&nbsp;and sea level rise interactions. The Pearl River Delta model has been run for 1 month forced only by tides and sea level rise at the model boundary.</li> <li>EXP11-15 (for Hato) and EXP26-30 (for Mangkhut) allow the study of tide, surge and sea level rise interactions;&nbsp;in these experiments the model has been fully forced by atmospheric forcing, tides and sea level rise.</li> <li>EXP16-20 (for Hato) and EXP31-35 (for Mangkhut) allow the study of&nbsp;tide&nbsp;and sea level rise interactions and are needed for the calculation of the surge, the model&nbsp;has been forced by tides and sea level rise only at the model boundary. The surge can be calculated as the difference between the fully forced run (EXP11-15 and EXP26-30) and the corresponding tide-only forced run (EXP16-20 and EXP31-35) for a given sea level rise.</li> <li>EXP21-25 (for Hato) and EXP35-40 (for Mangkhut) allow the study of the surge and sea level rise interactions only (no tides); for&nbsp;these experiments the model has been forced by atmospheric forcing and sea level rise at the model boundary.</li> </ul>
