A trans-African migrant shows repeatable route choice in males and repeatable timing in females
<p>Migrant bird populations often show substantial variation in route choice and timing. Determining whether this population-level variation is driven by between-individual differences and/or flexibility within individuals is key to identifying drivers of migration patterns. 'Repeatability' (R, the proportion of population-level variation attributable to between-individual variation) has become a central metric for the relative consistency of individual behaviour. Individual repeatability in migratory route choice and timing is often reported to vary between seasonal and regional contexts and may also differ between demographic groups (e.g. sexes), but interpreting repeatability requires careful consideration of the underlying changes in between- and within-individual variation. We GPS-tracked repeat migrations for eight male and five female Eleonora's falcons <em>Falco eleonorae</em> and quantified the magnitude of within- and between-individual variation and the individual repeatability of their seasonal routes and timing at 100km intervals all across Africa. We did this across both sexes and then separately for males and females. We found greater between-individual variation in spring routes, albeit with substantial regional fluctuations in both seasons. The greatest between-individual variation in routes occurred during the spring desert-crossing, but this coincided with high within-individual variation, and thus only low repeatability of route choice. Route repeatability instead peaked (R = 0.6–0.8) through the Horn of Africa in spring and during the rainforest-crossing in autumn. Variation and repeatability of timing were stable across regions, with generally higher between-individual variation and repeatability in spring. Sex-specific analyses suggest males exhibit higher route repeatability, while females exhibit stronger seasonal contrasts in timing repeatability. Such sex differences were unexpected, but overall, between-individual variation and repeatability in routes and timings appear greater where environmental and annual cycle constraints are weaker. Route repeatability is especially high where falcons show fidelity to stop-over sites, or individual barrier-crossing preferences. Individual routines may be acquired through early-life exploration-refinement.</p>
Exploring the in Vitro Operating Window of Glycosyltransferase PtUGT1 from Polygonum tinctorium for a Biocatalytic Route to Indigo Dye
<p>The eobiotic compound indican lends itself to a compelling biocatalytic dyeing strategy for denim, in which the formation of corrosive byproducts is avoided. However, the efficient and scalable production of indican remains a key bottleneck. This work focuses on the <em>in vitro</em> characterization of <em>Pt</em>UGT1, a glycosyltransferase from <em>Polygonum tinctorium</em> that catalyzes the formation of indican via the glycosylation of indoxyl. Here, the buffer composition and enzyme concentration were identified as key parameters for enzyme activity and stability. The short lifetime of the enzyme under reaction conditions initiated an immobilization study. As a consequence, an amino-functionalized methacrylate resin was identified as a highly functional option for efficient immobilization of <em>Pt</em>UGT1, allowing immobilization yields of >98% for enzyme loadings up to 7.6 wt %. We further report a stabilization factor of 47 and significantly improved overall biocatalytic productivity. The straightforward handling and reuse of the described heterogeneous biocatalyst is demonstrated.</p>

NEMARCO project: Dataset for the publication "Development of a new manufacturing route for NiCrSiFeB alloys by Direct Energy Deposition Laser Beam process (LMD)"
<p><strong>LMD dataset</strong></p> <p>This dataset gathers data from different parts of the Laser Metal Deposition metal Additive Manufacturing process (DED-LB). The dataset covers not only the process development data for samples manufacturing and monitored data of the melt pool size during the process, but also the metrics associated to the powder feedstock consumption, energy consumption and process efficiency.</p> <p><strong>Motivation</strong></p> <p>Nickel-based NiCrSiFeB alloy (Ni-Cr-Si-B self-fluxing family) are excellent candidates for replacing Cobalt-based alloys in aeronautical components such as sealing rings, valve seats, sliding bearing seats, etc. In this type of components, commonly manufactured by centrifugal casting and conventional processes, high temperature wear and stiffness under complex thermo-mechanical stresses cause lack of sealing and an increase in the wear rate. Metal additive manufacturing by direct laser metal deposition with powder (p-LMD) is presented as a potential manufacturing route for the complex processing of this type of alloys. This research work deals with the development of a new manufacturing route using p-LMD that ranges from the proper selection of the chemical composition for the starting powders, the development of the LMD process parameters to tackle the challenges associated to the wide solidification range and crack susceptibility of Ni-Cr-Si-B alloys, its monitoring and control, as well as the post- processing required to achieve the manufacture of aeronautical components.</p>

Data from: Genetic diversity, infection prevalence, and possible transmission routes of Bartonella spp. in vampire bats
Bartonella spp. are globally distributed bacteria that cause endocarditis in humans and domestic animals. Recent work has suggested bats as zoonotic reservoirs of some human Bartonella infections; however, the ecological and spatiotemporal patterns of infection in bats remain largely unknown. Here we studied the genetic diversity, prevalence of infection across seasons and years, individual risk factors, and possible transmission routes of Bartonella in populations of common vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) in Peru and Belize, for which high infection prevalence has previously been reported. Phylogenetic analysis of the gltA gene for a subset of PCR-positive blood samples revealed sequences that were related to Bartonella described from vampire bats from Mexico, other Neotropical bat species, and streblid bat flies. Sequences associated with vampire bats clustered significantly by country but commonly spanned Central and South America, implying limited spatial structure. Stable and nonzero Bartonella prevalence between years supported endemic transmission in all sites. The odds of Bartonella infection for individual bats was unrelated to the intensity of bat flies ectoparasitism, but nearly all infected bats were infested, which precluded conclusive assessment of support for vector-borne transmission. While metagenomic sequencing found no strong evidence of Bartonella DNA in pooled bat saliva and fecal samples, we detected PCR positivity in individual saliva and feces, suggesting the potential for bacterial transmission through both direct contact (i.e., biting) and environmental (i.e., fecal) exposures. Further investigating the relative contributions of direct contact, environmental, and vector-borne transmission for bat Bartonella is an important next step to predict infection dynamics within bats and the risks of human and livestock exposures.
