Slab metamorphism and interface earthquakes in Peru: implications for along-strike fluid content and seismotectonic variation

Evidenced by a typically shallow subducted thick mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) layer that dominates the subducting Nazca plate and a significant lack of arc magmatism, the Peruvian megathrust remain enigmatic in thermal regime and petrological metamorphism. Thermally controlled slab dehydration in the incoming plate may facilitate fluids release and migration which possibly causes fault instability and seismic and aseismic slips. We find that (1) the eclogitization of the MORB layer and the harzburgitization of the ultramafic layer, and the subsequent dehydration embrittlement probably affect interface seismicity in Peru; (2) the subduction of the Nazca Ridge separates southern Peru from north-central Peru, leading to a MORB-dominant oceanic lithosphere beneath Peru associated with an aseismic interface at depth and a lack of arc magmatism; (3) slab dehydration of >0.01 wt%/km accompanied by temperatures of 300-600°C possibly affect the occurrence of earthquakes and slips distributed on the hydrated interface. The along-strike fluid content variation possibly interprets the forearc seismotectonic segmentation associated with pore fluid pressure variation on megathrusts.

Formaston Class II Pictish Cross Slab, Aboyne

Formaston 1 (St Adomnan), Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, Pictish cross-slab with ogham inscription. Measurements: H 1.12m, W 0.43m, D 0.12m Class II symbol stone bearing mirror, interlace-filled cross-shaft and incised Ogham inscription Place of discovery: NJ 5412 0014 Present location: Victory Hall, Aboyne Found lying in the kirkyard at Formaston before 1874 and moved to the grounds of Aboyne Castle by 1883. It was taken to Inverurie Museum in 1974 and thence to the Victory Hall, Aboyne. The outer line of ogham runs along the roll moulding on the edge of the slab. The oghams are in Irish script and language and include the Pictish names Nehht and Talorc. Date: eighth or ninth century. The slab is in a protective glass case in Victory Hall, Aboyne which makes 3D modelling difficult and it was only possible to model front face. Canmore ID 17507 Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Inis Gé Medieval Cross Slab

There is not much information on this stone cross slab. However, at some point it was moved from an original context and placed on a concrete slab. The date is also unknown, but it is generally accepted as a medieval cross slab. Irish monks lived on the island between the sixth and 10th century producing purple dye. The stone may be from this period. View in Matcap to view the designs in greater detail. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Pictish Cross Slab, East Mainland, Orkney

The front face of a Pictish cross slab modelled moments after the stone was lifted and the cross revealed for the first time. The face has not been cleaned and the design it partly concealed by adhering soil, but the form of the cross and the S-dragon to the bottom left are clear. More detail will be visible once the face has been cleaned and conserved. The stone measures 0.85m+ long by 0.55m wide and 0.09m thick. A 3d model rear face of the stone can be viewed here: https://skfb.ly/UQKA This cross probably dates from the 8th century AD. Scan by Dr Hugo Anderson-Whymark, 13th October 2016.
