Monthly vertical profiles of salinity, temperature, pressure, oxygen and photosynthetically-available radiation in Sapelo River, Doboy Sound, Duplin River and Altamaha River transect surveys from April 2008 to April 2015
Monthly hydrographic surveys were performed along the Sapelo River, Doboy Sound, Duplin River and Altamaha River from April 2008 to April 2015. Vertical CTD profiles were collected from the surface to bottom during low and high tide phases at fixed stations chosen to coincide with long-term GCE-LTER moorings. Conductivity, temperature, pressure, photosynthetically-available radiation (PAR) and oxygen concentration were measured at 8 Hz using a SeaBird Electronics SBE-37 instrument, and depth, salinity and sigma-t and oxygen saturation were calculated using UNESCO algorithms. Data values collected during the upcast were deleted. This data set was collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER monthly hydrographic monitoring program, and will be updated approximately annually to include the latest observations.
June 2002 bin-averaged CTD profiles for the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Doboy Sound transect
Two hydrographic surveys were performed on June 19, 2002, along an east-to-west transect through Doboy Sound near Sapelo Island, Georgia (Doboy Sound Transect, GCE-DB). Vertical CTD profiles were collected at approximately 2km intervals from -2km to 10km along the transect during low tide and high tide conditions. Conductivity, temperature, pressure and optical backscatter were measured, and depth, salinity and sigma-t were calculated for each profile. Data values collected on the upcast were deleted, and the remaining data were averaged within 0.5m depth bins and interpolated to produce a smooth profile for contouring. This data set was collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER quarterly hydrographic monitoring program.

PIE LTER nutrient samples collected by Sigma Autosampler between 2001 and 2017 in three headwater sites of contrasting land use, and at the Parker and Ipswich River Dams as they enter into the Plum Island Sound estuary, Massachusetts.
Total organic nitrogen, total organic phosphorus, and nitrate concentrations collected frequently by Sigma autosampler (or volunteers in winter) from 5 sites. Sites include three headwater sites of contrasting land use (CC= Forest, SB = suburban, CS = wetland) and at the mouth of the Ipswich and Parker Rivers where they flow into the estuary.
PIE LTER, stable isotope chemistry (carbon, nitrogen and sulfur) for food web analysis of functional groups in the Plum Island Sound Estuary, Massachusetts.
Stable isotopes of primary producers will be compared to stable isotopes of functional groups of organisms at primarily three sites within the estuary that have different dominant sources of organic matter. The three sites are: Lower (IBYC, SO-3, mouth of Plum Island Sound, 2-3 km upstream of the mouth of the estuary), Middle (OTL, PR-10.1, upper Sound, lower Parker, 8-11 km upstream of the mouth of the estuary) and Upper (P2, PR-21.9, upper Parker, above Middle Rd Bridge (22 km upstream of the mouth of the estuary). The Lower site is dominated by marine phytoplankton, the Middle site is dominated by a mixture of salt marsh and phytoplankton and the Upper site is dominated by oligohaline phytoplankton and fresh marsh. Ten functional groups will be sampled at each site (Surface sediment, benthic diatoms, Nereis, mummichog, ribbed mussels, POM, blue mussels, pelagic copepods (Acartia), silversides and soft shell clams (Mya). Marsh, benthic algae and phytoplankton inputs or benthic vs. pelagic pathways will be evident in the isotopic signals of these functional groups. Samples will be collected between the middle and end of August to reflect a growing season using recently produced OM. Samples of 15 – 20 individuals will be pooled for analysis. Some silverside samplings will have 3 different pooled samples for determination of variance. Often times the same species are not collected at each site due to habitat differences (salinity/discharge) so additional species are collected to try to accomplish task of getting functional groups collected.
Plum Island LTER phytoplankton identification using HPLC and Chem Taxonomy along transects in the Plum Island Sound estuary, Massachusetts.
Water column samples are collected along an estuarine salinity gradient as part of our monitoring surveys of the Parker River estuary each spring and late summer (typically high vs low freshwater input). Samples are filtered, and stored frozen for later pigment analyses by HPLC. Pigment data are then analyzed by CHEMTAX, calibrated to a matrix of pigment ratios based on taxonomy and enumeration of selected subsamples by microspcopy. Data are presented in terms of chlorophyll a concentrations partitionaed among the major phytoplankton groups as determined by CHEMTAX. For 2003-2006, sampling stations along the Plum Island Sound-Parker River were at fixed geographic locations at specific "Bends" in the river. In 2008, we began sampling the water column in salinity space rather than at specific geographic locations along the river. This sampling approach was adopted in order to follow particular water masses in this macrotidal estuary. In practical terms, it means that sampling locations, or stations, are not static. Therefore, we have mapped the 11 sampling locations (latitude and longitude are logged at each station) from each transect along the mainstem of the estuary, so each station may be placed along the river (to the nearest 0.5km) as well as in salinity space. We have also used the km marker to assign the sampling locations from each survey to one of four bounding boxes : the Sound (Plum Island Sound; EST-PR-SoundBND) which encompasses approximatly the first 9.5 km or the transect, with Okm at the mouth of the sound; the Lower Parker River (EST-PR-LowerParkerBND) , ~9.5 - 14.5 km; the Middle Parker River (EST-PRMiddleParkerBND), ~14.5 - 18.75 km, and the Upper Parker River (EST-PR-UpperParker BND)., ~18.75 to 24.25 km (the Parker R. Dam).
PIE LTER zooplankton surveys using plankton tows along transects in the Plum Island Sound estuary, Massachusetts
Zooplankton were collected in spring and late summer/fall at four stations representing the salinity gradient in the Parker River-Plum Island Sound estuary. Two size classes, greater than 335 micron and greater than 150 micron, were collected by net tows. Conductivity or salinty and temperature were recorded for each sample. Samples were concentrated to less than 250 mls and preserved in 70 percent EtOH. For taxonomy, sample splits were taken such that a minimum of 250 individuals were present, and counted under a dissecting microscope. Individuals were identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible, generally to species. Adult copepods were additionally characterized by sex.
