Assessing the vulnerability of plant functional trait strategies to climate change

<p><strong><span>Aim: </span></strong><span>Our ability to understand how species may respond to changing climate conditions is hampered by a lack of high-quality data on the adaptive capacity of species. Plant functional traits are linked to many aspects of species life history and adaptation to environment, with different combinations of trait values reflecting alternate strategies for adapting to varied conditions. If the realised climate limits of species can be partially explained by plant functional trait combinations, then a new approach of using trait combinations to predict the expected climate limits of species trait combinations may offer considerable benefits. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Location:</span></strong><span> Australia.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Time period:</strong> </span><span>Current and future. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods:</span></strong><span><strong> </strong>Using trait data for leaf size, seed mass and plant height for 6,747 Australian native species from 27 plant families, we model the expected climate limits of trait combinations and use future climate scenarios to estimate climate change impacts based on plant functional trait strategies. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Results:</span></strong><span><strong> </strong>Functional trait combinations were a significant predictor of species climate niche metrics with potentially meaningful relationships with two rainfall variables (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.36 &amp; 0.45) and three temperature variables (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.21, 0.28, 0.30). Using this method, the proportion of species exposed to conditions across their range that are beyond the expected climate limits of their trait strategies will increase under climate change. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Main conclusions:</span></strong><span><strong> </strong>Our new approach, called Trait Strategy Vulnerability, includes three new metrics. For example, the Climate Change Vulnerability (CCV) metric identified a small but important proportion of species (4.3%) that will on average be exposed to conditions beyond their expected limits for summer temperature in the future. These potentially vulnerable species could be high priority targets for deeper assessment of adaptive capacity at the genomic or physiological level. Our methods can be applied to any suite of co-occurring plants globally.</span></p>

RICE WHEAT CROPPING SYSTEMS-CONSTRAINTS AND STRATEGIES : A REVIEW

<p>The rice-wheat cropping system (RWCS) in the Indo-Gangetic plains (IGP) of South Asia with the help of Green<br> Revolution in the early 1970&rsquo;s greatly contributed to India&#39;s food self-sufficiency and livelihood of millions of<br> peoplethus, became the country&#39;s primary source of food-grain production. However, deterioration of soil health and<br> quality, ground water depletion, water stress, labour shortage, introduction of new weeds and pests particularly<br> Phalaris minor, Scirpophaga incertulas and climate change have all contributed to a major production standstill and<br> deterioration in recent years by which the sustainability of rice wheat cropping system is now at jeopardy. Traditional<br> agronomic practices had various negative implications on the sustainability of rice wheat cropping system with the<br> introduction of HYVs. So, a paradigm shift is required to achieve long-term productivity, sustainability and allow<br> farmers to minimise inputs, optimise yields, enhance profitability, maintain the natural resource base and reduce risk<br> owing to both environmental and economic issues through resource-conserving technologies (RCTs) including<br> zero/minimaltillage, PUSA decomposer, bed planting, crop residue management, mechanical rice transplanter (MRT)<br> and crop diversification. This article focuses some of the issues that need to be addressed in the RWCS in order to<br> achieve the goal of increasing regional productivity and assuring food security while maximising the effective use of<br> natural resources, enhancing rural livelihoods and aiding in poverty alleviation.</p>

Data supporting: Success of post-fire plant recovery strategies varies with shifting fire seasonality

<p><span>Wildfires are increasing in size and severity and fire seasons are lengthening, largely driven by climate and land use change.</span> <span>Many plant species from fire prone ecosystems are adapted to specific fire regimes corresponding to historical conditions and shifts beyond these bounds may have severe impacts on vegetation recovery and long-term species persistence</span><span>. Here, we conduct a meta-analysis of field-based studies across different vegetation types and climate regions to investigate how post-fire plant recruitment, reproduction and survival are affected by fires that occur outside of the historical fire season. We find that fires outside of the historical fire season may lead to decreased post-fire recruitment for many species, particularly obligate seeding species. Conversely, we find a general increase of post-fire survival in resprouting species. </span><span>Our results highlight the trade-offs that exist when considering the effects of changes in the seasonal timing of fire, an already present aspect of climate-related global fire regime change. </span></p>

Experimental data: Inferring strategies from observations in long iterated prisoner's dilemma experiments

<p>While many theoretical studies have revealed the strategies that could lead to and maintain cooperation in the Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma, less is known about what human participants actually do in this game and how strategies change when being confronted with anonymous partners in each round. Previous attempts used short experiments, made different assumptions of possible strategies, and led to very different conclusions. We present here two long treatments that differ in the partner matching strategy used, i.e. fixed or shuffled partners. Here we use unsupervised methods to cluster the players based on their actions and then Hidden Markov Model to infer what are those strategies in each cluster. Analysis of the inferred strategies reveals that fixed partner interaction leads to a behavioral self-organization. Shuffled partners generate subgroups of strategies that remain entangled, apparently blocking the self-selection process that leads to fully cooperating participants in the fixed partner treatment. Analyzing the latter in more detail shows that AllC, AllD, TFT- and WSLS-like behavior can be observed. This study also reveals that long treatments are needed as experiments less than 25 rounds capture mostly the learning phase participants go through in these kinds of experiments.</p>

Data from: Ruderals naturalize, competitors invade: varying roles of plant adaptive strategies along the invasion continuum

<p>1. It is increasingly recognized that the factors facilitating plant invasions depend on the stage along the introduction-naturalization-invasion continuum. Adaptative strategies, i.e., combinations of functional traits that represent overall fitness in the face of one or more selection pressures, have shown promise in explaining plant invasions. However, whether adaptive strategy patterns change with the stages of plant invasion is not yet known. </p> <p>2. Using the Pladias Database of the Czech Flora and Vegetation, we explored how Grime's adaptive strategies (competitors, stress-tolerators, ruderals; CSR) and introduction pathways (deliberate vs. accidental) relate to plant invasion along the introduction-naturalization-invasion continuum.</p> <p>3. Phylogenetically corrected ANOVAs showed that naturalized species (referring to non-invasive naturalized species in this study) were mostly R-selected, whereas invasive species tended to be C-selected. The results of phylogenetic regression analysis further confirmed that across the deliberately and accidentally introduced species, R- and C-selection were positively related to naturalization and invasion success, respectively. We also found that deliberate introduction was negatively related to naturalization success and grid-cell occupancy of naturalized species, likely due to the different CSR strategies possessed by deliberately and accidentally introduced aliens.</p> <p>4. Our study provides empirical evidence that different adaptive strategies are associated with species that have reached different invasion stages and confirms the usefulness of the CSR strategy framework for understanding plant invasion. It has implications for predicting and preventing potential high-impact invaders. For example, our results show that naturalized C-selected species have a higher probability of becoming invasive than naturalized R-selected species. Therefore, management actions are essential to prevent further introductions and spread of competitors.</p> <p> </p>

Chameleon biogeographic dispersal associated with extreme life history strategies

(2022) Chameleon biogeographic dispersal associated with extreme life history strategies (DOI<strong>: </strong><span>10.1111/ecog.06323</span>).</p> <p>We used species distribution, phylogenetic and life history trait data of 181 chameleons to determine the relationship between three traits (coastal distribution, body size, position on the fast/slow life history continuum) and past dispersal probability on an evolutionary timescale using trait-dependent biogeographic models.</p> <p>We found that all three traits were associated with past biogeographical movements. Lineages having coastal distributions and those with large bodies had higher dispersal probabilities. Interestingly, chameleons with either very fast or very slow life history were more successful dispersers than species with an intermediate strategy. Together, the three traits "coastal, large-bodied and extreme life history" form a dispersal syndrome.</p> </div>

Strategies, Benefits and Challenges App Store-inspired Requirements Elicitation - Supplementary Material

<p>This is the supplementary material for the paper &quot;Strategies, Benefits and Challenges App Store-inspired Requirements Elicitation&quot;.&nbsp;</p> <p>Abstract: App store-inspired elicitation is the practice of exploring competitors&rsquo; apps, to get inspiration for requirements. This activity is common among developers, but little insight is available on its practical use, advantages and possible issues. This paper aims to study strategies, benefits and challenges of app store-inspired elicitation, and compare this technique with more traditional requirements elicitation interviews. We conduct an experimental simulation with 58 analysts, and collect qualitative data. Our results show that specific guidelines and procedures are required to better conduct app store-inspired elicitation. Furthermore, current search features made available by app stores are not suitable for this practice, and more tool support is required to help analysts in the retrieval and<br> evaluation of competing products. While interviews focus on the why dimension of requirements engineering (i.e., goals), app store-inspired elicitation focuses on how (i.e., solutions), offering indications for implementation and improved usability. Weapon performance and contest assessment strategies of the cavitating snaps in snapping shrimp

<p class="MsoNormal">Animals compete in contests over limited resources. Contestants forfeit once they ascertain that their opponent has greater resource holding potential (RHP) (mutual assessment) or once they reach a threshold of costs (self assessment). Functional scaling studies of contest behavior performance can inform how assessment signals, offensive capacity, and endurance scale with RHP and thereby elucidate the mechanisms through which each of these assessment types operate. Here, we performed behavioral contest analyses to determine the assessment strategies used in snapping shrimp (<em>Alpheus heterochaelis</em>) contests. Then, we used biomechanical measurements of a common contest behavior to inform how assessment might operate. We were specifically interested in the snapping behavior during which snapping shrimp fire imploding cavitation bubbles – hereafter, "snaps" – at their opponents. We showed that <em>A. heterochaelis</em> use mutual assessment early in contests.  Then, when they fire snaps, they switch to cumulative assessment – a type of self assessment where contestants endure costs from their own behaviors (e.g. energy) and their opponent's (e.g. injury). Because larger individuals tend to win contests, we then tested how the maximum performance and endurance of snaps scaled with size. We measured the average angular velocity of the snapping dactyl, cavitation bubble duration, and pressure of snaps as metrics of performance. We measured 10 snaps per individual (n = 76 individuals). From this series of 10 snaps, we calculated the maximum of each metric as the maximum performance and the attrition of each metric over the course of ten snaps as a measure of endurance. Maximum performance increased with size, but endurance did not. This suggests that cumulative assessment in snapping shrimp is driven by opponent-imposed costs. Our results are not consistent with self-assessment based on endurance; however, the experiment could not fully replicate the quick succession of snaps fired in real contests. Future experiments should better replicate the rapid firing of snaps to test if endurance matters in a more ecologically relevant context. Our framework of integrating biomechanics and behavioral ecology provide a pathway to identify precise mechanisms of contest assessment and animal behavior more broadly.</p>

<p>This video is the third talk from our two day Future Blood Testing: Challenges &amp; Opportunities Event that took place on the 13/09/2022.</p> <p>Measuring platelet function: new strategies for precision medicine to prevent thrombosis - Prof Jon Gibbins (University of Reading).</p> <p>Bio: Jon Gibbins is Professor of Cell Biology within the School of Biological Sciences at the University and is Director of the Institute for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research. He is a graduate of the University, obtaining a degree in Pathobiology with Chemistry in 1991 and a PhD in Molecular Endocrinology in 1995. Following a period of postdoctoral research at the Oxford University, he returned to Reading in 1998 as a lecturer. Jon has established an internationally leading research group that studies blood clotting, with a particular focus on the development of more effective clinical strategies for the prevention and treatment of heart attacks and strokes, and thrombosis associated with infection.
