Data from: Living, dead, and absent trees - How do moth outbreaks shape small-scale patterns of soil organic matter stocks and dynamics at the Subarctic mountain birch treeline?

<p>Mountain birch forests (<i>B. pubescens</i> Ehrh. ssp. <i>czerepanovii</i>) at the subarctic treeline not only benefit from global warming, but are also increasingly affected by caterpillar outbreaks from foliage-feeding geometrid moths. Both of these factors have unknown consequences on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and biogeochemical cycles. We measured SOC stocks down to the bedrock under living trees and under two stages of dead trees (12 and 55 years since moth outbreak) and treeless tundra in northern Finland. We also measured in-situ soil respiration, potential SOC decomposability, biological (enzyme activities, microbial biomass), and chemical (N, mineral N, pH) soil properties. SOC stocks were significantly higher under living trees (4.1±2.1 kg m²) than in the treeless tundra (2.4±0.6 kg m²), and remained at an elevated level even 12 (3.7±1.7 kg m²) and 55 years (4.9±3.0 kg m²) after tree death. Effects of tree status on SOC stocks decreased with increasing distance from the tree and with increasing depth, i.e. a significant effect of tree status was found in the organic layer, but not in mineral soil. Soil under living trees was characterized by higher mineral N contents, microbial biomass, microbial activity, and soil respiration compared with the treeless tundra; soils under dead trees were intermediate between these two. The results suggest accelerated organic matter turnover under living trees but a positive net effect on SOC stocks. Slowed organic matter turnover and continuous supply of deadwood may explain why SOC stocks remained elevated under dead trees, despite the heavy decrease in aboveground C stocks. We conclude that the increased occurrence of moth damage with climate change would have minor effects on SOC stocks, but ultimately decrease ecosystem C stocks (49% within 55 years in this area), if the mountain birch forests will not be able to recover from the outbreaks.</p>

Data in Brief: Twig selection on mountain birch Betula pubescens by winter-feeding willow grouse Lagopus lagopus in a subarctic forest

<p class="MsoNormal"></p> <p class="MsoNormal">In a subarctic forest at Kvaløya, northern Norway willow grouse (<em>Lagopus lagopus</em>) fed at snow level by clipping bits of twigs from mountain birch (<em>Betula pubescens</em>) during winter. Birch has two types of twigs ending in a terminal bud: long twigs with a smooth bark, and short twigs with rings of thicker bark. The grouse selected ringed twigs above smooth twigs despite a surplus of smooth twigs in the forest. Ringed twigs had more bark cm<sup>-1</sup> of twig length and a higher relative bark/wood ratio than smooth twigs. Smooth twigs had growth nodes that increased in diameter inwards from the tip. Because of the non-linear relation between the area and the circumference of a circle, the bark/wood ratio decreased for each node. Although being able to clip much thicker twigs, 90 % of smooth twigs clipped by grouse were <span>≤</span> 2 mm in diameter. It is concluded that willow grouse fed optimally on birch in winter by selecting twigs to minimize fibrous wood intake.</p>

Individual and interactive effects of warming and nitrogen supply on CO2 fluxes and carbon allocation in subarctic grassland

<p>We provide data (Data_all.xlsx) and the code for ecosystem productivity, soil respiration, carbon allocation in the shoot, root, soil, and microbes, and nitrogen and carbon&nbsp;availability in plant, soil, and microbes data. The measurements were made under soil warming gradient and under N fertilization treatment during the summer of 2018.</p> <p>The sheet &#39;13C_allocation&#39; contains data on excess <sup>13</sup>C in the plant, soil, and soil respiration for days 1,3,6, and 10 days after <sup>13</sup>CO<sub>2</sub> pulse labeling.&nbsp;</p> <p>The sheet &#39;primary productivity&#39; contains data on ecosystem fluxes (Gross primary productivity; &nbsp;Net ecosystem productivity and Dark respiration).</p> <p>The sheet &#39;SR&#39; contains data of soil respiration.</p> <p>The sheet &#39;dynamics.&#39; contains data of continuous measurements of soil respired CO<sub>2</sub> (SR), <sup>13</sup>CO<sub>2</sub> (SR13C), soil water content(SWC), soil temperature (ST), and photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) and air temperature (Tair).</p> <p>The sheet &#39;Soil_N&#39; consists of dissolved organic N (TdN), NH<sub>4</sub>, and NO<sub>3</sub> measured in soil. The sheet plant_N consists of N in plants. The microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN) are provided in the sheet &#39;Microbial_Biomass&#39;</p> <p>The R file &#39;Script. R&#39; explains and plots the data. In addition, this R file also provides the script for time series regression analysis between response variables (soil-respired CO<sub>2</sub> and soil-respired <sup>13</sup>CO<sub>2</sub>) and environmental drivers (soil water content, soil temperature, and PAR), and provides the script for structural equation modeling (SEM) and linear mixed effects model and statistics.</p>
