Survival and malformations, swimming performance and tadpole traits

<p>Targeted gene flow (TGF) could bolster the adaptive potential of isolated populations threatened by climate change, but could also lead to outbreeding depression. Here, we explore these possibilities by creating mixed- and within-population crosses in a terrestrial-breeding frog species threatened by a drying climate. We reared embryos on wet and dry soils and quantified fitness-related traits upon hatching. TGF produced mixed outcomes in hybrids which depended on crossing direction (origin of gametes from each sex). North-south crosses led to low embryonic survival if eggs were of a southern origin, and high malformation rates when eggs were from a northern population. Conversely, east-west crosses led to one instance of hybrid vigour, evident by increased fitness and desiccation tolerance of hybrid offspring relative to offspring produced from within-population crosses. These contrasting results highlight the need to experimentally evaluate the outcomes of TGF for focal species across generations prior to implementing management actions.<b> </b></p>

Data from: Functional Frogs: Using swimming performance as a model to understand natural selection and adaptations

<p>The 'Functional Frogs' 5E lesson plan is an outcome of a Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The NSF project integrates research on swimming locomotion in frogs with broader goals of improving science education. The aim of this RET program was to increase scientific literacy in secondary school teachers in Oklahoma, so that they can transfer knowledge from academic research experience to the classroom and thus improve their students' understanding of science. In the this lesson, we focus primarily on comparing the peak velocity of five species of frogs, guiding students to collect data from videos of frogs swimming. The students then make evidence-based interpretations about the morphological traits that may underlie differences in swimming velocity across species. The five species differ both in morphology and ecology, with some inhabiting the aquatic environment more than others. Therefore, the lesson helps guide students through important steps of the scientific method to achieve a greater understanding of how adaptations arise in nature through examining variation in ecology, morphology, and locomotor performance.</p>

Elevated CO2 does not alter behavioural lateralization in free‐swimming juvenile European sea bass ( Dicentrarchus labrax) tested in groups

<p>Rising concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) equilibrate with oceanic CO<sub>2</sub>, contributing to ocean acidification (OA). OA can induce changes in fish behavioural lateralization (an expression of brain functional asymmetries) manifested in a left or right turning preference in detour tests. However, recent works find no such effects, and other work demonstrates assessment of turning preferences by detour tests to be a flawed methodology. Behavioural lateralization and OA effects on lateralization therefore need to be assessed with alternative paradigms. Here, we investigate left-right turning preferences of N=260 free-swimming juvenile European sea bass (<em>Dicentrarchus</em> <em>labrax</em>) reared in either: ambient conditions; OA conditions; or reared in ambient conditions but tested in OA water. Fish were observed free-swimming in groups of 10 individuals in a circular tank, and individuals' turning preferences were quantified using trajectory data from video. In contrast to early studies, and in support of recent comprehensive work on coral reef fishes, we show that near future OA levels have no effect on behavioural lateralization (left–right turning preference) in juvenile European sea bass.</p>
