Long-living and highly efficient bio-hybrid light-emitting diodes with zero-thermal-quenching biophosphors
<p>Bio-hybrid light-emitting diodes (Bio-HLEDs) based on color down-converting filters with fluorescent proteins (FPs) have achieved moderate efficiencies (50 lm/W) and stabilities (300 h) due to both thermal- and photo-degradation. Here, we present a significant enhancement in efficiency (~130 lm/W) and stability (>150 days) using a zero-thermalquenching bio-phosphor design. This is achieved shielding the FP surface with a hydrophilic polymer allowing their homogenous integration into the network of a light-guiding and hydrophobic host polymer. We rationalize how the control of the mechanical and optical features of this bio-phosphor is paramount towards highly stable and efficient Bio-HLEDs, regardless of the operation conditions. This is validated by the relationships between the stiffness of the FP-polymer phosphor and the maximum temperature reached under device operation as well as the transmittance of the filters and device efficiency.</p>
Biomass material - undulating venus shell - supported nanoscale zero-valent iron for the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions in aqueous solution
<p>Nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) has a high adsorption capacity for heavy metals, but easily forms aggregates. Herein, preprocessed undulating venus shell (UVS) is used as support material to prevent NZVI from reuniting. The SEM and TEM results show that UVS had a porous layered structure and NZVI particles were evenly distributed on the UVS surface. A large number of adsorption sites on the surface of UVS-NZVI are confirmed by IR and XRD. UVS-NZVI is utilized for adsorption of Pb<sup>2+</sup> and Cd<sup>2+</sup> at pH=6 in aqueous solution, and <a name="_Hlk35440679">the experimental maximum adsorption capacities are 29.91 mg·g<sup>-1</sup> and 38.99 </a>mg·g<sup>-1</sup>, respectively. Adsorption isotherm results indicate that the adsorption of ions by UVS-NZVI is more in line with the Langmuir model when Pb<sup>2+</sup> or Cd<sup>2+</sup> existed alone. For the mixed solution of Pb<sup>2+</sup> and Cd<sup>2+</sup>, only the adsorption of Pb<sup>2+</sup> by UVS-NZVI conforms to the Langmuir model. Kinetic studies demonstrate that the determination coefficients (R<sup>2</sup>) of the pseudo first-order kinetic model for UVS-NZVI adsorption of Cd<sup>2+</sup> and Pb<sup>2+</sup> are higher than those of the pseudo second-order kinetic model and Elovich kinetic model. Highly efficient performance for metal removal makes UVS-NZVI show potential application to heavy metal ion adsorption.</p>

Data from: How can we get close to zero?: the potential contribution of biomedical prevention and the investment framework towards an effective response to HIV
Background: In 2011 an Investment Framework was proposed that described how the scale-up of key HIV interventions could dramatically reduce new HIV infections and deaths in low and middle income countries by 2015. This framework included ambitious coverage goals for prevention and treatment services resulting in a reduction of new HIV infections by more than half. However, it also estimated a leveling in the number of new infections at about 1 million annually after 2015. Methods: We modeled how the response to AIDS can be further expanded by scaling up antiretroviral treatment (ART) within the framework provided by the 2013 WHO treatment guidelines. We further explored the potential contributions of new prevention technologies: 'Test and Treat', pre-exposure prophylaxis and an HIV vaccine. Findings: Immediate aggressive scale up of existing approaches including the 2013 WHO guidelines could reduce new infections by 80%. A 'Test and Treat' approach could further reduce new infections. This could be further enhanced by a future highly effective pre-exposure prophylaxis and an HIV vaccine, so that a combination of all four approaches could reduce new infections to as low as 80,000 per year by 2050 and annual AIDS deaths to 260,000. Interpretation: In a set of ambitious scenarios, we find that immediate implementation of the 2013 WHO antiretroviral therapy guidelines could reduce new HIV infections by 80%. Further reductions may be achieved by moving to a 'Test and Treat' approach, and eventually by adding a highly effective pre-exposure prophylaxis and an HIV vaccine, if they become available.
