Data and code for: Disease outbreaks select for mate choice and coat color in wolves
<p><span>We know much about pathogen evolution and the emergence of new disease strains but less about host resistance and how it is signaled to other individuals and subsequently maintained. The cline in frequency of black-coated wolves across North America is hypothesized to result from a relationship with canine distemper virus (CDV) outbreaks. We test this hypothesis using cross-sectional data from wolf populations across North America that vary in the prevalence of CDV and the allele that makes coats black, longitudinal data from Yellowstone National Park, and modeling. The frequency of CDV outbreaks generates fluctuating selection that results in heterozygote advantage that in turn impacts the frequency of the black allele, the optimal mating behavior, and the black wolf cline across the continent.</span></p>

Transcriptomic regulation of seasonal coat color change in hares
<p>Color molts from summer brown to winter white coats have evolved in several species to maintain camouflage year-round in environments with seasonal snow. Despite the eco-evolutionary relevance of this key phenological adaptation, its molecular regulation has only recently begun to be addressed. Here, we analyze skin transcription changes during the autumn molt of the mountain hare (Lepus timidus) and integrate the results with an established model of gene regulation across the spring molt of the closely related snowshoe hare (L. americanus). We quantified differences in gene expression among three stages of molt progression – "brown" (early molt), "intermediate" and "white" (late molt). We found 632 differentially expressed genes, with a major pulse of expression early in the molt, followed by a milder one in late molt. The functional makeup of differentially expressed genes anchored the sampled molt stages to the developmental timeline of the hair growth cycle, associating anagen to early molt and the transition to catagen to late molt. The progression of color change was characterized by differential expression of genes involved in pigmentation, circadian and behavioral regulation. We found significant overlap between differentially expressed genes across the seasonal molts of mountain and snowshoe hares, particularly at molt onset, suggesting conservatism of gene regulation across species and seasons. However, some discrepancies suggest seasonal differences in melanocyte differentiation and the integration of nutritional cues. Our established regulatory model of seasonal coat color molt provides an important mechanistic context to study the functional architecture and evolution of this crucial seasonal adaptation.</p>
Assessing corrosion resistance of 2D nanomaterial-based coatings on stainless steel substrates
<p><span>Two dimensional (2D) materials have elicited considerable interest in the past decade due to a diverse array of novel properties ranging from high surface to mass ratios, a wide range of band gaps (insulating boron nitride to semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides), high mechanical strength and chemical stability. Given the superior chemo-thermo-mechanical properties, 2D materials may provide transformative solution to a familiar yet persistent problem of significant socio-economic burden: the corrosion of stainless steel (SS). With this broader perspective, we investigate corrosion resistance properties of stainless steel coated with 2D nanomaterials; molybdenum disulfide (MoS<sub>2</sub>), boron nitride (BN), bulk graphite in 3.5 wt. % aqueous NaCl solution. The nanosheets were prepared by a novel liquid phase exfoliation technique and the coatings were made by a paint brush to achieve uniformity. Open circuit potential (OCP) and potentiodynamic plots indicate the best corrosion resistance is provided by the MoS<sub>2</sub> and the BN coatings. Superior performance of the coating is attributed low electronic conductivity, large flake size, and uniform coverage of SS substrate, which likely impeded the corrosive ions from the solution to diffuse through the coating. </span></p>
Data from: The transcriptional landscape of seasonal coat colour moult in the snowshoe hare
Seasonal coat colour change is an important adaptation to seasonally changing environments but the evolution of this and other circannual traits remains poorly understood. In this study we use gene expression to understand seasonal coat colour moulting in wild snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus). We used hair colour to follow the progression of the moult, simultaneously sampling skin from three moulting stages in hares collected during the peak of the spring moult from white winter to brown summer pelage. Using RNA-sequencing, we tested if patterns of expression were consistent with predictions based on the established phases of the hair growth cycle. We found functionally consistent clustering across skin types, with 766 genes differentially expressed between moult stages. "White" pelage showed more differentially expressed genes that were upregulated relative to other skin types, involved in the transition between late telogen (quiescent stage) and the onset of anagen (proliferative stage). Skin samples from transitional "intermediate" and "brown" pelage were transcriptionally similar and resembled the regressive transition to catagen (regressive stage). We also detected differential expression of several key circadian clock and pigmentation genes, providing important means to dissect the bases of alternate seasonal colour morphs. Our results reveal that pelage colour is a useful biomarker for seasonal change but that there is a consistent lag between the main gene expression waves and change in visible coat colour. These experiments establish that developmental sampling from natural populations of non-model organisms can provide a crucial resource to dissect the genetic basis and evolution of complex seasonally changing traits.
Facile preparation of high conductive silver electrodes by dip-coating followed by quick sintering
<p>With polyol-synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as raw materials, the silver electrodes with high conductivity were fabricated via dip-coating method followed by sintering process, and the effects of dip-coating and sintering process on the conductivity and surface roughness of silver electrodes were investigated in detail. The silver film with a thickness of 1.97 μm and a roughness of about 2 nm can be prepared after dip-coated at a pulling rate of 500 μm·s<sup>-1</sup> for 40 coating times. The non-conductive dip-coated silver films are transformed into conductive silver electrodes after conventional sintering in muffle oven, infrared sintering and microwave sintering, respectively. Compared with high sintering temperature and long sintering time of conventional sintering and infrared sintering, microwave sintering can achieve the quick sintering of silver films to fabricate high conductive silver electrodes. The silver electrodes with a sheet resistance of 0.75 Ω·sq<sup>-1</sup> and a surface roughness of less than 1 nm can be obtained after microwave-sintered at 500 W for 50 s. The adjustable dip-coating method followed by quick microware sintering is an appropriate approach to prepare high conductive AgNPs based electrodes for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) or other devices.</p>
Sheepskin coat
The sheepskin coat was purchased for the collection of the Tatra Museum from Andrzej Kubin of Ratułów in 1929. The owner of the apparel was a sixty-year-old inhabitant of the village of Ciche, who had worn it on her wedding day. The sheepskin coat, tailored in a fashion typical for women, reaches to the knees and is slightly narrowed at the waist and widened at the bottom. It was fashioned from five pieces of leather: two front pieces, back piece and two sleeves. It is fastened with three wooden buttons covered with white leather, which are slid through loops. The stand-up collar is decorated with red leather binding. Muhlbach township coat of arms
A medium quality model (here decimated to 1000k) of the 18th Century coat of arms for the township of Sebes (Muhlbach), Alba County, Romania. Placed on the Old Township hall at the end of major repairs finished in 1765, it mentions the works and the main contributors and officials. The Old Township Hall was demolished in 1880 and now the coat of arms resides in the permanent exhibition of the Ioan Raica Municipal Museum in Sebes. Identification of genetic variants associated with anterior cruciate ligament rupture and AKC standard coat color in the Labrador Retriever
<p>Canine anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is a common complex disease. Prevalence of ACL rupture is breed-dependent. In an epidemiological study, yellow coat color was associated with increased risk of ACL rupture in the Labrador Retriever. ACL rupture risk variants may be linked to coat color through genetic selection or through linkage with coat color genes. To investigate these associations, Labrador Retrievers were phenotyped as ACL rupture cases or controls and for coat color and were single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyped. After filtering, ~697K SNPs were analyzed using GEMMA and mvBIMBAM for multivariate association. Functional annotation clustering analysis with DAVID was performed on candidate genes. A large 8Mb region on chromosome 5 that included <em>ACSF3</em>, as well as 32 additional SNPs, met genome-wide significance at <em>P</em><6.07E-7 or Log<sub>10</sub>(BF) = 3.0 for GEMMA and mvBIMBAM, respectively. On chromosome 23, SNPs were located within or near <em>PCCB</em> and <em>MSL2</em>. On chromosome 30, a SNP was located within <em>IGDCC3</em>. SNPs associated with coat color were also located within <em>ADAM9</em>,<em> FAM109B</em>,<em> SULT1C4</em>,<em>RTDR1</em>,<em> BCR</em>, and <em>RGS7</em>. <em>DZIP1L</em> was associated with ACL rupture. Several significant SNPs on chromosomes 2, 3, 7, 24, and 26 were located within uncharacterized regions or long non-coding RNA sequences. This study validates associations with the previous ACL rupture candidate genes <em>ACSF3</em> and <em>DZIP1L</em> and identifies novel candidate genes. These variants could act as targets for treatment or as factors in disease prediction modeling. The study highlighted the importance of regulatory SNPs in the disease, as several significant SNPs were located within non-coding regions.</p>

<p>This dataset presents comprehensive information on the development and characterization of antibacterial polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coatings incorporating tanfloc, a plant-derived condensed tannin polymer with inherent antimicrobial properties. The dataset encompasses experimental data related to the fabrication of PEMs using tanfloc as either a polyanion or a polycation, expanding the versatility of this amphoteric polymer in PEM coatings. Typically, PEMs are formed by combining a polycation and a polyanion with complementary ionic groups. However, the unique amphoteric nature of tanfloc allows for the creation of PEMs utilizing only one of its functional groups, leaving the other functional group available for imparting antibacterial activity.</p> <p>The dataset includes details on the assembly of tanfloc-containing PEMs employing various counter-polyelectrolytes, including three poly-anionic glycosaminoglycans with varying charge densities, as well as the polycations N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan and polyethylenimine. The layer-by-layer assembly of PEMs is monitored using in situ Fourier-transform surface plasmon resonance (FT-SPR), confirming stable layer-by-layer construction. Surface chemistry is assessed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).</p> <p>Furthermore, this dataset provides insights into the biocompatibility of tanfloc-containing PEMs, demonstrating their support for mammalian cells. Most notably, the dataset includes extensive data on the antiadhesive and antibacterial properties of these coatings against common implant-associated pathogens, such as <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em> and <em>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</em>. The antibacterial effects observed are attributed to electrostatic interactions and the polyphenolic nature of tanfloc.</p>
