Identifying the proximal cue(s) for pupal color variation in the bordered patch butterfly, Chlosyne lacinia (Geyer 1837; Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae)

Color is a multifaceted trait with many functions such as predator defense, thermoregulation, and immune response. We investigated pupal color variation in Chlosyne lacinia pupae, focusing on identifying the cue for increased melanization. Through laboratory experiments, we demonstrated pupae reared on black backgrounds exhibited significantly higher melanization compared to those on white backgrounds. Additionally, black pupae experienced longer developmental periods, suggesting a trade-off between defense and developmental time. Our findings support crypsis as a likely evolutionary driver for increased melanization in response to substrate color. We discuss potential implications for predator avoidance, immune response, and developmental costs associated with melanization. This study provides insights into the adaptive significance of pupal melanization in response to environmental cues, shedding light on the complex interplay between life history traits in butterflies.

Automatic message sequence chart creation from simulation run of the parametric colored Petri net model of the Chandy-Lamport algorithm with four processes

The video shows the creation of the message sequence chart from a simulation run of the proposed parametric colored Petri net model of the Chandy-Lamport algorithm using the CPN tool with four constituting processes. The picture shows the resulting message sequence chart.

Message Sequence Chart of Parametric Model With 4 Processes via Automatic Simulation Run_SuppInfo.mp4: This video shows the automatic generation of a message sequence chart of the proposed parametric colored Petri net model of the Chandy-Lamport distributed global snapshot algorithm using the CPN tool version 4.0.0. The model's number of constituting processes is parametric and was set to four. The video was generated using the authors' updated CPN tool extension server. The automatic simulation run of the model has been used to create this video. The CPN tool randomly selects the enabled transition at each step in an automatic simulation run.

Picture of Message Sequence Chart of Parametric Model With 4 Processes_SuppInfo.png: This picture shows the automatically generated message sequence chart of the proposed parametric colored Petri net model of the Chandy-Lamport algorithm that is visible in the above video clip. Replication Data for Coloring Tetrahedral Semiconductors: Synthesis and Photoluminescence Enhancement of Ternary II-III2‑VI4 Colloidal Nanocrystals

Ternary tetrahedral II-III2-VI4 semiconductors, where II is Zn or Cd, III In or Ga, and VI S, Se, or Te, are of interest in UV radiation detectors in medicine and space physics as well as CO2 photoreduction under visible light. We synthesize colloidal II-III2-VI4 semiconductor nanocrystals from readily available precursors and
ascertain their ternary nature by structural and spectroscopic methods, including 77Se solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The pyramidally shaped nanocrystals range between 2 and 12 nm and exhibit optical gaps of 2−3.9 eV. In the presence of excess anions on the particle surface, treatment with Lewis acidic, Z-type ligands results in better passivation and enhanced photoluminescence. Electronic structure calculations reveal
the most stable, lowest energy polymorphs and coloring patterns. This work will pave the way toward more environmentally friendly, ternary semiconductors for optoelectronics and electrocatalysis.

[Data set]for publication Acidification of Strawberry Puree Affects Color and Volatile Characteristics during Storage

Color degradation of strawberry-based products negatively affects consumer acceptance of these products. To improve the color stability of strawberry puree during storage, an acidification step (pH 1.5 and 2.5) prior to pasteurization was performed and quality changes of strawberry puree during storage (35 °C, 40 days) were monitored. Acidification prior to pasteurization resulted in an improved color and anthocyanin stability. However, the volatile fraction of strawberry puree was negatively influenced by acidification of the puree. Low acidic conditions (pH 1.5) resulted in the hydrolysis of esters, oxidation of terpene oxides, and acid-catalyzed reactions of terpene alcohols during storage. The volatile fraction of strawberry puree stored at pH 2.5 and 3.5 (the latter being the original strawberry puree) were more similar. Furthermore, after 4 days of storage, the pH of the acidified purees was brought back to the natural pH of the system (3.5) and subsequently thermally treated and stored. During this second storage, color showed a slightly faster degradation rate in those purees that were previously acidified, whereas anthocyanins exhibited similar trends suggesting that the advantage of acidification to preserve color would be beneficial after thermal processing, but more limited during storage of the regenerated product (second storage).
