Solvent Engineered Synthesis of SnO Nanoparticles for High-Performance Anodes
<p>Batteries are the most abundant form of electrochemical energy storage. Lithium and sodium ion batteries account for a significant portion of the battery market, but high-performance electrochemically active materials still need to be discovered and optimized for these technologies. Recently, tin(II) oxide (SnO) has emerged as a highly-promising battery electrode. In this work, we present a facile synthesis method to produce SnO nanoparticles whose size and shape can be tailored by changing the solvent nature. We study the complex relationship between wet chemistry synthesis conditions and resulting nanoparticle morphology. Furthermore, high-level electronic structure theory, including dispersion corrections to account for van der Waals forces, are employed to augment our understanding of the underlying chemical mechanisms. The electronic vacuum alignment and surface energies are determined, allowing the prediction of the thermodynamically-favoured crystal shape (Wulff construction) and surface-weighted work function. Finally, the synthesized nanomaterials were tested as Li-ion battery anodes, demonstrating significantly enhanced electrochemical performance for morphologies obtained from specific synthesis conditions. </p> <p>Open-access publication in npj 2D Mater & Appl <a href="https://rdcu.be/cgdWZ">here</a>.</p>

Data and R code from: Pollination interactions reveal direct costs and indirect benefits of plant–plant facilitation for ecosystem engineers
Ecosystem engineers substantially modify the environment via their impact on abiotic conditions and the biota, resulting in facilitation of associated species that would not otherwise grow. Yet, reciprocal effects are poorly understood as studies of plant–plant interactions usually estimate only benefits for associated species while hardly considering how another trophic level may mediate direct and indirect effects for ecosystem engineers. We run a field experiment with ecosystem engineers blooming either alone or with associated plants to decompose net effects and to test the hypothesis that pollinator-mediated interactions provide benefits which balance costs of facilitation by ecosystem engineers. We found that net costs of facilitation are accompanied by pollinator-mediated benefits. Despite ecosystem engineers producing less flowers per plant, they were visited by more and more diverse pollinators per flower when blooming with associated plants than when blooming alone. However, fruit set was unaffected by the presence of associated plants and seed production per plant was higher when ecosystem engineers bloomed alone. Our findings suggest that besides experiencing direct costs, ecosystem engineers can also benefit from facilitating other species via increasing their own visibility to pollinators. This study illuminates how the outcome of direct plant–plant interactions might be mediated by indirect interactions including third players.
Hackathons as a Pedagogical Strategy to Engage Students to Learn and to Adopt Software Engineering Practices
<p>Teaching Software Engineering is not a trivial duty since several pedagogical strategies can be used and sometimes the impact of these on students is uncertain. Hackathons are similar to marathons, however used to produce solutions to solve a specific problem in a short period of time and based on intense collaboration. Educational hackathons aim to promote learning in such an environment. The Undergraduate computing programs of PUCRS decided to use a hackathon as a pedagogical strategy aiming to motivate the students to practice the adoption of software development practices and to work in groups as a means to practice the development of social skills. Therefore, we conducted a case study to investigate: 1) The motivations to students to attend or not attend an educational hackathon, 2) The students perceptions about this hackathon, 3) The Software Engineering practices adopted by students. In this study, we identified factors that may affect students motivation to participate (e.g., improve the teamwork skills), some students expectations about the hackathon (e.g., work in teams), and the practices adopted by the students (e.g., pair programming). Some of our findings include that students enjoy participating in an informal educational environment (e.g., hackathons) to improve their technical skills and to build network with some colleagues. This study can provide insights to teachers that wants to organize some activity than traditional teaching and the students perspective about this kind of strategy.</p>

A Survey on the Adoption of Patterns for Engineering Software for the Cloud - Response Dataset
<p>This work takes as a starting point a collection of patterns for engineering software for the cloud and tries to find how they are regarded and adopted by professionals. We investigate (1) their relevance for professional software developers, (2) the extent to which product and company characteristics influence their adoption, and (3) how adopting some patterns might correlate with the likelihood of adopting others. For this purpose, we surveyed 102 practitioners using an online questionnaire. </p> <p>Amongst other findings, we conclude that most companies are using these patterns, with the overwhelming majority (97%) using at least one. We observe that the mean pattern adoption tends to increase as companies mature, namely when varying the product operation complexity, active monthly users, and company size. Finally, we establish clear correlations in the adoption of specific pairs of patterns, with conditional probabilities as high as 94%, which hints on how some practices are dependent or influence the adoption of others.</p>

<p>Data of investigation published in the article: "Using Machine Learning for Web Page Classification in Search Engine Optimization"</p> <p>Abstract of the article:</p> <p>This paper presents a novel approach of using machine learning algorithms based on experts’ knowledge to classify web pages into three predefined classes according to the degree of content adjustment to the search engine optimization (SEO) recommendations. In this study, classifiers were built and trained to classify an unknown sample (web page) into one of the three predefined classes and to identify important factors that affect the degree of page adjustment. The data in the training set are manually labeled by domain experts. The experimental results show that machine learning can be used for predicting the degree of adjustment of web pages to the SEO recommendations—classifier accuracy ranges from 54.59% to 69.67%, which is higher than the baseline accuracy of classification of samples in the majority class (48.83%). Practical significance of the proposed approach is in providing the core for building software agents and expert systems to automatically detect web pages, or parts of web pages, that need improvement to comply with the SEO guidelines and, therefore, potentially gain higher rankings by search engines. Also, the results of this study contribute to the field of detecting optimal values of ranking factors that search engines use to rank web pages. Experiments in this paper suggest that important factors to be taken into consideration when preparing a web page are page title, meta description, H1 tag (heading), and body text—which is aligned with the findings of previous research. Another result of this research is a new data set of manually labeled web pages that can be used in further research. </p>

Checkbot API raw results from Libraries, Archives and Museums websites for evaluating a data-driven Search Engine Optimization methodology
<p>Results from Checkbot API to measure and collect 341 websites compatibility on multiple SEO variables (34 variables). Checkbot API indexes the website's code to find features capable of impacting SEO performance. Each website has been tested with the maximum number of links allowed to be crawled equally to 10.000 per test. In this way, we retrieved data about the overall websites performance including their sub-pages, and not only the main domain names. A scale from 0 (lowest rate) to 100 (highest rate) was adopted for each examined variable. This constitutes a useful managerial indicator of dealing with the quantification of websites performance while avoiding complex measurement systems that are difficult to be adopted by administrators. Data for: A Benchmark Engineering Methodology to Measure the Overhead of Application-Level Monitoring
<p>Application-level monitoring frameworks, such as Kieker, provide insight into the inner workings and the dynamic behavior of software systems. However, depending on the number of monitoring probes used, these frameworks may introduce significant runtime overhead. Consequently, planning the instrumentation of continuously operating software systems requires detailed knowledge of the performance impact of each monitoring probe.</p> <p>In this paper, we present our benchmark engineering approach to quantify the monitoring overhead caused by each probe under controlled and repeatable conditions. Our developed MooBench benchmark provides a basis for performance evaluations and comparisons of application-level monitoring frameworks. To evaluate its capabilities, we employ our benchmark to conduct a performance comparison of all available Kieker releases from version 0.91 to the current release 1.8.</p> <p>This dataset supplements the paper and contains the raw experimental data as well as several generated diagrams for each experiment.</p>

It uses Virtual Interaction sites in order to speed up simulation. The technique is described in the aforementioned work. The archive contains working topology for <strong>POPC</strong> lipid molecules and 6fs timestep without any significant loss of accuracy.</p>

Engineering skyrmions in transition-metal multilayers for spintronics
<p>Magnetic skyrmions are localized, topologically protected spin structures that have been<br> proposed for storing or processing information due to their intriguing dynamical and transport<br> properties. Important in terms of applications is the recent discovery of interface stabilized<br> skyrmions as evidenced in ultra-thin transition-metal films. However, so far only skyrmions at<br> interfaces with a single atomic layer of a magnetic material were reported, which greatly<br> limits their potential for application in devices. Here we predict the emergence of skyrmions<br> in [4d/Fe2/5d]n multilayers, that is, structures composed of Fe biatomic layers sandwiched<br> between 4d and 5d transition-metal layers. In these composite structures, the exchange<br> and the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions that control skyrmion formation can be tuned<br> separately by the two interfaces. This allows engineering skyrmions as shown based on<br> density functional theory and spin dynamics simulations.</p>
