Dataset: High-fidelity experimental model verification for flow in fractured porous media
<p>The dataset consists of five image series of tracer experiments in fractured porous media. The images have been taken using PET imaging and are available in DICOM format. Overall, three fractured geometries have been considered, called fractip-a, fractip-b, and fractip-e. Different boundary conditions have been used, generating in total four experiments. In addition, images of simple water displacement experiments in an intact core (fractip-j) are provided, useful for extracting macroscopic hydraulic properties of the core material. All experiments are based on water displacement and use 18F-FDG tracer for PET tracking. The available DICOM images are reconstructed using 1 min x 0.4mm space-time voxels. </p> <p>A related data analysis based on the Darcy Scale Image Analysis toolbox DarSIA is available at 10.5281/zenodo.10410227.</p>
The influence of flow electrode channel design on flow capacitive deionization performance: Experimental and CFD modelling insights
<p>Flow capacitive deionization (FCDI) is an emerging desalination technology at which flow electrodes (shearthinning<br>flowable carbon slurries) are used to remove ions from saline water. The geometry of flow electrode<br>channels, which provide the path and ensure the distribution and mixing of the flow electrodes, is one of the most<br>important aspects to be optimized. This work presents experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD)<br>modelling analysis of the influence of the geometry of flow electrode channels on FCDI performance. Flow<br>electrode gaskets (with open, serpentine (short) horizontal and serpentine (long) vertical channels) were 3D<br>printed using a polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PET-G) filament. The FCDI cell with a vertical serpentine flow<br>electrode channel exhibited the poorest performance due to channel blockage by carbon particles, while the best<br>results were achieved with a horizontal serpentine flow electrode channel. CFD simulations aided in understanding<br>this behaviour by showing that the channel geometry strongly affects the local shear rate, and thus the<br>local viscosity of flow electrodes. Thus, it is recommended to design channels that induce flow disturbance<br>aiming for increasing the shear rate and hence reducing flow electrode viscosity, therefore promoting their<br>flowability and reducing clogging chances.</p>

Raw data to "Macrophage Plasticity and Polarization Are Altered in the Experimental Model of Multiple Sclerosis"
<p>Background: Macrophages have been identified as one of the major effectors of inflammation and demyelination in both MS and its animal model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). However, the activation and heterogeneity of macrophages in MS is not fully understood.</p> <p>Results: We performed a complete immunophenotyping of M1 and M2 macrophages from EAE and control mice through polychromatic flow cytometry. We found that M1 macrophages possessed a higher proinflammatory profile in EAE compared to control mice, since they expressed higher levels of activation/co-stimulatory markers (iNOS, CD40 and CD80) (Table 1), cytokines/chemokines (IL-6, IL-12, CCL2 and CXCL10) (Table 2) and a higher expression of Toll-like receptors (TLR2) 2 and 5 (Table 3). On the contrary, M2 of EAE mice lost their M2-like phenotype by showing a decreased expression of their signature markers CD206, CD11c, CD44 and CCL22, and a concomitant upregulation of several M1 makers such as iNOS, CD40, CD80/CD86 (Table 1) and proinflammatory CCL22 (Table 2) and TLR4 and 8.</p> <p>Conclusions: Our data account for a phenotypic alteration of M1/M2 balance during MS and this can be of crucial importance not only for a better understanding of the immunopathology of this neurodegenerative disease but also to potentially develop new macrophage-centered therapeutic strategies</p>

Experimental data for validation of a single-storey flexible double-skin façade system model
<p>Double skin façades are adaptive envelopes aiming at improving building energy use and comfort performance. Their adaptive principle relies on the dynamic management of the cavity’s ventilation flow and the shading device (when available). They can also be integrated with the environmental systems for heating, cooling, and ventilation. In most cases, though, the possible exploitation of the ventilation airflow is not fully enabled, as the adoption of only one or two possible airpath limits the possibility that this façade architecture offers and flexible interaction with the environmental systems is not planned. This work aims to develop, using an existing software tool for building energy simulation, a numerical model of a flexible double-skin façade module capable of fully exploiting the adaptive features of such envelope concept by switching between different cavity ventilation strategies. Leveraging on the Double Glass Facade component available in IDA ICE, a new model for a flexible double-skin façade module was developed, and its performance in replicating the thermophysical behaviours of such a dynamic system has been assessed by comparison with experimental data collected through a dedicated experimental activity using one the outdoor test cells of the TWINS facility in Torino (Italy). The accuracy of the predictions resulted in line with the performance obtained by the Double Glass Facade component to simulate conventional double-skin facades. By establishing a new archetype model to study the performance and optimal integration of a large class of double-skin façade modules, including fully flexible ones, this works demonstrated the possibility of modifying existing models in building energy simulation tools to study unconventional building envelope model solutions such as adaptive façade systems.</p>

EO4Diversity: Experimental Dataset - Invasive Alien Species Modelling & Mapping
<p>To support the EC and ESA joint Flagship Action of Biodiversity and vulnerable ecosystems to advance Earth System Science and its responses to the global challenges, the Earth Observation for Biodiversity Modeling (EO4Diversity) project, developed three Biodiversity Pilots (BD Pilots) that focus on core issues in biodiversity policy priorities:</p> <ul> <li>BD pilot1: Ecosystem productivity and health</li> <li>BD pilot2: Ecosystem accounting, monitoring and reporting towards policy obligations</li> <li>BD pilot3: Ecosystem resilience to invasive species</li> </ul> <p>Each of these pilots develops an integrated solution that brings together the scientific strengths of high-resolution multi-sensor EO data products (such as remote sensing enabled EBVs and products - RS-EBVS) on the one hand, and the state-of-the-art ecological models, on the other.</p> <p>This Zenodo repository contains the <strong>BD Pilot 3 Invasive Alien Species Modelling & Mapping</strong> products and product description.</p>
