Point Frame Measurements of Moss and Vascular Frequencies Under Increasing N Deposition Over Five Years, 2011-2015
Development of the oil sands has led to increasing atmospheric N deposition, with values as high as 17 kg N ha-1 yr-1; regional background levels <2 kg N ha-1 yr-1. Bogs, being ombrotrophic, may be especially susceptible to increasing N deposition. To examine responses to N deposition, over five years, we experimentally applied N (as NH4NO3) to a bog near Mariana Lakes, Alberta, at rates of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 kg N ha-1 yr-1, plus controls (no water or N addition). Anchored point frames were established at each plot and measure at 30 points along the frame each year in July. We used absolute frequencies of Sphagna and vascular plants to examine species and community responses to N treatment. Increasing N input led to decreased frequency of S. fuscum in the third through fifth year of N addition (Fig. 10A) and an increased frequency of S. magellanicum in the second through fifth year of N addition Dominant shrubs, all shrubs, and all vascular plant species frequencies generally increased with increasing N input, with those increases all significant in 2013-2015 (Fig. 10 G-I). Water addition alone had no significant effect on the frequency of vascular plant species or groups in any of the five years (p >= 0.12). At Mariana Lakes Bog, we observed changes in vegetation even at low experimental N loadings, with vegetation progressively changing over the 5 years of the study (Figs. 10,11). These results suggest that bogs that have persisted under very low ambient N deposition may be especially sensitive to increasing N deposition, in terms of plant species relative abundances and plant community composition.

We used absolute frequencies of Sphagna and vascular plants to examine species and community responses to N treatment. Increasing N input led to led to decreased abundance of S. fuscum and increased abundance of S. angustifolium, S. magellanicum, Andromeda polifolia, Vaccinium oxycoccos, and of vascular plants in general. For dominant shrubs and all vascular species combined, N addition had no effect in the first two years, but frequencies increased with increasing N addition in 2013-2015. Pairwise year comparisons indicated a gradual change in plant species composition as the experiment progressed. Of the 21 pairwise comparisons between nominal N treatments, 18 were significant, indicating a clear influence of N addition on plant community composition. These results suggest that bogs that have persisted under very low ambient N deposition may be especially sensitive to increasing N deposition, in terms of plant species’ relative abundances and plant community composition.
SGS-LTER Ecosystem Stress Area - long-term point-frame (percent basal cover) dataset following nutrient enrichment stress on the Central Plains Experimental Range in Nunn, Colorado, USA 1982-2011, ARS Study Number 3
This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). The data table and associated metadata document, which is generated in Ecological Metadata Language, may be available through other repositories serving the ecological research community and represent components of the larger SGS-LTER project collection. Water, nitrogen, and water-plus-nitrogen at levels beyond the range normally experience by shortgrass steppe communities were applied from 1971 through 1975, plant densities were sampled through 1977, and then sampling resumed in 1982, with sampling frequencies changing from annually to every other year. The initial sampling from 1970 to 1974 showed that the water and water plus nitrogen treatments had the strongest effect on plant community structure, both treatments increased biomass, and exotic weed species were noted on the water plus nitrogen treatment. Later sampling from 1982 to 1991 showed a ten-fold increase in exotic weed species on the water plus nitrogen plots as compared to the controls (Milchunas and Lauenroth 1995), a community change that has persisted on this site due to a chronic elevation of soil nitrogen caused by a plant tissue/soil organic matter feedback mechanism (Vinton and Burke 1995). In 1998, Six new treatments were superimposed on the historic study site. The six new treatments were: control, sugar, lignin, sawdust, lignin and sugar, and sawdust and sugar.In 2010, plots will be sampled every 5 years. Refseq datasets for training frame classification
<p>The data is based on andomly selected viral and bacterial genomes and the human193(GRCh38.p13) reference genome which were downloaded from GenBank. From each original nucleic acid sequences we created mutliple patches of length 300 in all possible reading frames using a sliding window on the initial sequence and its reversed complement. For the train and val file, the resulting patches are translated to amino acid sequences of length 100 where the DNA_test file contains the nucleic acid sequences patches of length 300. System resistance of stainless steel portal frames under gravity loads
<p>This file includes data on system strength of stainless steel frames under gravity loads obtained from the finite element simulations carried out on six stainless steel frames. This data was used in the analysis carried out and reported in the publication: Input and output data is provided separately for each of the six frames investigated. Frames 1 and 2 correspond to austenitic stainless steel, Frames 3 and 4 to duplex stainless steel and Frames 5 and 6 to ferritic stainless steel.</p>
