Dataset for Green Transition Policies, Stakeholders and Practices in North Macedonia

<p>This dataset contributed to deliverable 4.2 Regional Mapping Report and shows the North Macedonian mapping.&nbsp;This report is the second deliverable of WP4 &ndash; Measuring and assessing impacts and costs of a just green transition in the WB, of the GreenFORCE project. It was jointly authored by the WB project partners, as well as 2 subcontracted parties from the region.</p> <p>The EU Economic and Investment Plan for the WB includes a green agenda for the WB, with pillars to be pursued for transitioning towards a carbon-neutral economy. Such a shift will surely challenge the economies and societies in the WB. The social and policy context is yet fragile to allow for the development and mass distribution of green transition technologies, while human resources are not prepared and/or are insufficient to produce and implement innovation. Yet, the green transition also paves the way towards new development and resilience opportunities. The research will inform on the readiness/potential of societal actors (industry, academia, policymakers, civic society) to embrace the pathways to transformation, and will propose a framework for continuous monitoring of impacts and costs. The key findings and lessons learnt derived within WP4 will be transferred into the scientific papers and policy briefs (WP 2 &amp; 3) and published under the dissemination events (WP5).</p> <p>Regional mapping is a key task for the research, contributing to initial data gathering and the refinement of the research proposal, and to the sub-question on the identification of sectors and territories affected by the transitions and current progress of transition practices. This is a participatory mapping, engaging local stakeholders and communities to reveal local knowledge. Each WB partner will produce the respective country report, and Co-PLAN will work on the final regional report.</p> <p>This deliverable is the final regional report. It will also include the mapping frame used to conduct the mapping process. The WB partners will do the mapping for their own countries. The PC will subcontract data gathering for the remaining countries. The mapping is done for actors, practices and policies in place, territories upon the level of relevance and potential for engaging in green transition; and sectors. All partners will design the mapping frame, using also knowledge from other mapping processes. The frame will contain the type of information to be collected, the standardisation of data entry, and the tailored instruments to be deployed for accessing information.</p>

Dataset: Green light during incubation: effects on hatching characteristics in brown and white laying hens

<p>Dataset used for the paper &quot;Green light during incubation: effects on hatching characteristics in brown and white laying hens&quot;.<br> <br> Abstract:</p> <p>Providing light during incubation is being investigated as a method to improve welfare in later life in poultry. This incubation method would more closely approximate chicken natural environment compared to the current incubation in darkness. Previous studies showed promising results of light during incubation on broiler welfare, but little is known about effects of light during incubation on laying hens. Especially, information about its effects on hatching characteristics (hatch time, hatchability, chick quality, body weight and embryonic age of death) is scarce and requires investigation in both white and brown egg layers. In the current study, Dekalb White (DW) and ISA Brown (ISA) eggs were incubated in complete darkness (dark) or in a light:dark cycle of 12L:12D throughout incubation (light), resulting in four treatment groups: DW-dark, DW-light, ISA-dark, and ISA-light. In the light treatments, green LEDs of 520nm wavelength were used, at an intensity of 400 lux. First, light transmission through the eggshell was measured through 27 eggs. Then, an analysis of the effects of light during incubation on hatching characteristics was performed on 711 chicks in two consecutive experimental rounds. Light transmission was higher through white eggshells than through brown eggshells (N = 27, p &lt; 0.001). Light during incubation had no effects on hatching characteristics (N = 711, p &ge; 0.1). Despite the difference of light transmission through eggshell between hybrids, there was no interaction between incubation treatment and hybrid on hatching characteristics (N = 471, p &ge; 0.06). Hatch time was longer and navel quality was better in DW than in ISA, while body weight and embryonic age of death were lower in DW than in ISA (all p &lt; 0.001). Males and females had similar chick quality scores except for the beak quality, which was better for males (N = 486, p = 0.003). To conclude, green light during incubation did not negatively affect hatching characteristics in either DW nor ISA laying hen hybrids. Future research should therefore focus on its potential benefits for laying hen welfare.</p>

UBGG-3m: Fine-grained urban blue-green-gray landscape dataset for 36 Chinese cities based on deep learning network

<p>The UBGG dataset&nbsp;provides easily access and leverage to researchers and analysts, which is stored in the following Zenodo repository (<a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8053333">https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8352777</a>). The UBGG dataset consists of two main components:</p> <ul> <li><strong>UBGG-3m: the fine-grained UBGG map&nbsp;product&nbsp;of 36 metropolises in China.</strong>&nbsp;The UBGG-3m dataset captures the intricate urban landscape features with remarkable precision, providing a detailed representation at an impressive 3-meter resolution. Fig. 1 in User Guides&nbsp;shows the classification results for 36 Chinese metropolises. Researchers can delve into the nuances of the UBGG continuum, gaining invaluable insights into the interplay between the blue, green, and gray elements of urban environments in each metropolis.</li> </ul> <ul> <li><strong>UBGGset:</strong>&nbsp;<strong>the large-volume sample dataset to support the UBGG deep learning research.</strong> Complementing the UBGG-3m dataset, UBGGset serves as a large-volume sample dataset specifically tailored to support and foster UBGG research endeavors (Fig. 2). The UBGGset consists of 14,627 sample images (without data augmentation), with dimensions of 256 pixels in length and width, covering an urban area of approximately 2,272 km<sup>2</sup>. The UBGGset was constructed with co-registered pairs of 3 m Planet images and fine-annotated urban landscapes labeled on 1 m Google Earth image. Experimental evaluation of louver guidance efficiency for green sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris), Primary Datasets, 2016-2017

Throughout the world, louver-bypass systems are a common method for fish protection at water diversion sites. This study used controlled laboratory experiments to quantify louver efficiency for juvenile green sturgeon under a range of conditions. Green sturgeon juveniles used in the study were spawned from the University of California, Davis (hereafter UC Davis) captive broodstock program. Experimental trials were conducted within an indoor flume at the J. Amorocho Hydraulics Laboratory (JAHL) at UC Davis. The flume had a zero degree bed slop, and was equipped with a louver placed at a 15-degree angle to the streamwise flow. Louver slats had 25-mm clear spacing. The louver terminated at a bypass channel 0.3 m wide, and was operated to maintain water velocity in the bypass that was 1.2 times greater than the velocity in the flume. Full factorial experimental treatments were designed to address the influence of sturgeon size, water velocity, diel period, and water temperature on louver performance and behavior. Sturgeon were tested within three predefined size classes (range: 6 – 34 cm TL). At each size class, fish were tested under combinations of water velocity, water temperature, and photophase. During each experimental trial, 60 (+/-2) juvenile sturgeon were released from an acclimation chamber to enter the test area at the bottom of the flume. Fish were allowed to freely navigate throughout the test area until they were transported through the louver slats or bypass channel, at which point they were removed and the time was recorded. Trials ended when all fish were collected at a downstream endpoint, or after 90 minutes of exposure time, and remaining fish were removed from the flume. Trials were completed across two study years within seven months after hatch, following the same protocols with a few minor adjustments in year two. Patterns of and controls over nitrogen inputs by green alder (Alnus viridis spp. fruticosa) to a secondary successional chronosequence in interior Alaska I - N2 Fixation and Soil Temperature

We measured rates of nitrogen fixation by Alnus viridis spp. fruticosa and concurrent subcanopy soil temperature at BNZ LTER. To do so we utilized replicate (n=3/stage) stands of a seral sequence of successional stages maintained by the Bonanza Creek Long-Term Ecological Research program (BNZ LTER). At each of the 9 replicate stands we selected a total of 70 individual shrubs. During each of 7 sampling periods, 3 across the growing season of 1997 and 4 during 1998, we randomly selected 10 of 70 A. viridis spp. fruticosa at each replicate stand. We used acetylene reduction assays (ARA) to estimate rates of N2 fixation at each of the selected shrubs and concurrently measured soil temperature at each shrub. The attached database may be utilized to (1) elucidate seasonal trends in rates of N2 fixation by A. viridis spp. fruticosa across a boreal forest chronosequence and (2) investigate soil temperature controls over rates of N2 fixation. It may also be used to statistically analyze differences between years, successional stages and replicates within successional stage in both rates of ARA and temperature. We developed this database to describe seasonal trends of rates of nitrogen fixation by A. viridis spp. fruticosa across a boreal forest chronosequence and to elucidate soil temperature controls over rates.

Continuous soil temperature, specific conductance, and volumetric water content measurements from the Green Creek Active Layer Monitoring Station (ALMS04), McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2014-2021, ongoing)

As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project, five Active Layer Monitoring Stations (ALMSs) were established throughout Taylor Valley, Antarctica to support new research foci around the thermal-moisture dynamics of soils that may control habitat conditions and faunal responses to seasonal and annual freezing cycles in this ecosystem. Two ALMSs were established adjacent to streams (Green Creek, Von Guerard Stream), with sensors installed through the active layer from the thalweg out to the shoreline and dry soil beyond. Two ALMSs were similarly established adjacent to water tracks (Wormherder Creek, Water Track B) that are zero-order drainages of snow and ice melt that rarely have surface flow. The remaining station was established in dry soil (F6) to serve as an ambient control. ALMSs measure soil temperature, soil moisture (as volumetric water content; VWC), and specific conductance (as electrical conductivity; EC) through the active layer (soil surface down to the frost table) at several locations from the water’s edge to dry soils. This data package contains measurements from the Active Layer Monitoring Station at Green Creek (ALMS04).

Lowering of the snowpack surface by ablation (melt) was measured on a bimonthly basis within couloirs above the Green Lakes and Isabelle Valleys during the summer months. One-inch diameter PVC poles were driven into the snowpack to form vertical transects within each couloir. The height difference (cm) between the top of each pole and the snow surface was recorded. On the subsequent visit the new height difference was recorded and the pole driven into the snow and the reset height was recorded. Poles in a given transect were relocated as necessary during the course of the season.

Alpine plant seed microbiomes, germination, and plant-soil feedbacks, Niwot Ridge and Green Lakes Valley, 2018.

Seed and soil microbiomes strongly affect plant performance, and these effects can scale-up to influence plant community structure. However, seed and soil microbial community composition are variable across landscapes, and different microbial communities can differentially influence multiple plant metrics (biomass, germination rate), and community stabilizing mechanisms. We measured how microbiomes inside seeds and in soils varied among alpine plant species and communities that differed in plant species richness and density. Across 10 common alpine plant species, we found a total of 318 bacterial and 128 fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) associated with seeds, with fungal richness affected by plant species identity more than sampling location. However, seed microbes had only marginally significant effects on plant germination success and timing. In contrast, soil microbes associated with two different plant species had significant effects on plant biomass, and their effect depended both on the plant species and the location the soils were sampled from.

Microplastics in Como Creek, Green Lake 4, and Solifluction Lobes 2023.

Microplastics are known to persist in remote regions of the Colorado Front Range through atmospheric deposition. Although plastics are introduced by wet deposition, high rates of deposition are driven by dry deposition. With a warming climate, microplastic deposition may increase with unknown consequences for the ecological health of remote ecosystems. To assess the risk of microplastic distribution in remote regions, monitoring of environmental compartments is needed. To this end, we sampled three surface waters within the Niwot LTER for microplastics using a peristaltic in-line filtration sampling pump.

Effect of varying post field collection filtration times on lake water nutrient analysis for Green Lake 3 and Green Lake 4, 2025.

After field collection, filtration time on lake and stream samples can vary. To test how this affects nutrient measurements we filtered samples from Green Lakes 3 and 4 at the time of collection in the field, immediately upon returning to the lab, 24 hours, and 48 hours after collection. Samples were then frozen and analyzed for chloride, nitrate and sulfate. Chloride and nitrate were below detection limits so only sulfate is reported. There was no statistically significant loss of sulfate as time progressed, indicating current filtration methods (<48 hours after collection) are acceptable for samples being analyzed via ion chromatography.
