Predators mitigate the destabilising effects of heatwaves on multitrophic stream communities
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Amidst the global extinction crisis, climate change will additionally expose ecosystems to more frequent and intense extreme climatic events, such as heatwaves. Yet, whether predator species loss—a prevailing characteristic of the extinction crisis—will exacerbate the ecological consequences of extreme climatic events remains largely unknown. Here, we show that predator species loss can interact with heatwaves to affect the compositional stability of ecosystems. By exposing multitrophic stream communities to realistic current and future heatwaves—locally informed by weather station data and downscaled regional climate projections—in the presence and absence of an apex fish predator, we found that heatwaves destabilised algal communities by homogenising them in space. However, this only happened when predators were absent. Additional heatwave impacts on multiple aspects of stream communities—including changes to the structure of algal and macroinvertebrate communities, total algal biomass, and the temporal variability of algal biomass—were not apparent during heatwaves and emerged only after the heatwaves had passed. Taken together, our results suggest that, though the ecological consequences of heatwaves can amplify over time as their impacts propagate through biological interaction networks, those impacts can be mitigated by the presence of predators. These findings underscore the importance of conserving trophic structure and the integrity of biological communities, and highlight the considerable potential for species extinctions to amplify the effects of climate change and extreme events.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The dataset contains the Chlorophyll a concentrations of mesocosms measured during a multifactorial experiment from terracotta tiles with a Benthotorch fluorometer, as well as data on leaf dry mass decomposition, and macroinvertebrate community composition, richness, and abundance. We conducted an experiment looking at the combined effects of predator loss and heatwaves on multiple aspects of aquatic communities in semi-open mesocosms with immigration and emigration from the adjacent Horonai stream, in Tomakomai experimental forest, Hokkaido, Japan. Our focal predator was <em>Cottus nozawae</em>, a freshwater sculpin. We exposed 2/3 of our 48 mesocosms to heatwaves based on either observed current or projected future heatwaves and tested for interactions between predator presence/absence and heatwaves. Our dataset also contains algal time series for different functional groups (based on fluoroprobe chlorophyll a data) across our experiment, including dates that were not the focus of our analyses. <p><em>The file contains the raw data related to the manuscript: "Acetaldehyde in Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Bottled Water: Assessment and Mitigation of Health Risk for Consumers"</em></p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong>: This study was designed to investigate the levels of acetaldehyde residues in polyethylene terephthalate bottled water and its significance in terms of consumer health. We analyzed 104 samples collected throughout Italy, so as to be representative of the national market. Parameters such as CO<sub>2</sub> level, shelf life, weight of the empty bottle and distance from the production sites to the point of sale were also collected. Although the levels of acetaldehyde complied with the limits established by Italian legislation, they varied widely, with concentrations ranging from 0.41 to 76.2 µg/L. An assessment of safety for human health, using the margin of exposure approach, showed that the amount of acetaldehyde in bottled water is unlikely to be of any safety concern for human health. The acetaldehyde residues were mainly due to CO<sub>2</sub> levels which influence solubility of acetaldehyde in water. They are also related to the size of the bottle and the distance from the store, but not to the shelf life, at least for 40 days. The findings suggest some good practices for a better product from the point of view of public health, like polymer quality and limitation of transport distances.</p> <p><strong>Funding</strong>: This research was funded by Mineracqua.</p> <p> </p>

IISWC 2021 Characterizing and Mitigating the I/O Scalability Challenges for Serverless Applications (Dataset and Scripts)
<p>As serverless computing paradigm becomes widespread, it is important to understand the I/O performance characteristics on serverless computing platforms. To the best of our knowledge, we provide the first study that analyzes the observed I/O performance characteristics -- some expected and some unexpected findings that reveal the hidden, complex interactions between the application I/O characteristics, the serverless computing platform, and the storage engines. The goal of this analysis is to provide data-driven guidelines to serverless programmers and system designers about the performance trade-offs and pitfalls of serverless I/O.</p>
Data from: Modelling harvest of Greenland barnacle geese and its implications in mitigating human-wildlife conflict
<p>Arctic-breeding goose populations have increased in recent decades and their expansion into agricultural areas has caused increasing conflict with farmers due to the damage they cause. Lethal control and scaring are common management strategies of conflict mitigation. Management typically focuses on local/national scales, making addressing the impact of localised control on the wider population challenging, particularly when populations move over large areas and cross international borders.</p> <p>We construct an integrated population model (IPM) to assess the cumulative impact of all shooting harvest (hunting and derogation shooting) on the Greenland barnacle goose, <em>Branta leucopsis</em>. We use data from monitoring schemes throughout the migratory flyway and use population projections to evaluate the impact of potential future shooting strategies on abundance.</p> <p>Our model suggests flyway abundance has declined since its 2012 peak, consistent with an increase in harvest rate and low productivity. Harvest rate increase was most pronounced on Islay (rising from 2% to 7% from 2011 to 2017), suggesting this was a probable cause of flyway abundance decline. </p> <p>Islay abundance has declined since derogation shooting began in 2000, whilst abundance at other wintering sites has increased. This may indicate that declines in Islay abundance may be due to both shooting mortality and emigration from Islay.</p> <p>Should future flyway-level harvest rates increase, further declines in abundance could be expected, and are likely to be more pronounced if harvests are extended to the entire winter range. Conversely, should harvest rates decline, an increase in abundance is predicted. Projections can therefore be used to allocate flyway-level harvest rates to alleviate local pressure without hindering flyway-level management objectives.</p> <p>Synthesis and applications. Our findings demonstrate the impact of local harvests on global abundance, emphasising the importance of internationally coordinated monitoring and management strategies of migratory species. IPMs provide a framework for adaptation to incorporate additional data when they become available and enable comparisons of future harvest scenarios to inform management strategies throughout the flyway. </p>
