Data from: Narrow thermal tolerance and low dispersal drive higher speciation in tropical mountains
Species richness is greatest in the tropics and much of this diversity is concentrated in mountains. Janzen (1967) proposed that reduced seasonal temperature variation selects for narrower thermal tolerances and limited dispersal along tropical elevation gradients. These locally adapted traits should, in turn, promote reproductive isolation and higher speciation rates in tropical mountains compared to temperate ones. Here we show that tropical and temperate montane stream insects have diverged in thermal tolerance and dispersal capacity, two key traits that are drivers of isolation in montane populations. Tropical species in each of three insect clades have markedly narrower thermal tolerances and lower dispersal than temperate species, resulting in significantly greater population divergence, higher cryptic species diversity, higher tropical speciation rates, and greater accumulation of species over time. Our study also indicates that tropical montane species, with narrower thermal tolerance and reduced dispersal ability, will be especially vulnerable to rapid climate change.
Tension zone trapped by exogenous cline: analysis of a narrow hybrid zone between two parapatric Oxytropis species (Fabaceae)
<p>Hybrid zones have been widely highlighted for their interest in understanding evolutionary processes. It is generally accepted that hybrid zones can be maintained in a balance between dispersal and selection. However, the selective forces can either be endogenous (i.e., genetic incompatibilities between parental taxa) or exogenous (i.e., parental taxa are adapted to different environments).</p> <p>In this study, we evaluated these alternatives and determined the maintenance of a narrow hybrid zone between parapatric distributed <em>Oxytropis diversifolia</em> and <em>O. leptophylla</em> in Nei Mongol, China. For 507 individuals sampled from two populations in the hybrid zone, 12 <em>O. diversifolia</em> populations and five <em>O. leptophylla</em> populations, we measured leaf-morphological characteristics, quantified genetic structure using 11 nuclear microsatellite loci and five chloroplast DNA intergenic regions, collected micro- and macrohabitat data, and conducted geographical cline analysis.</p> <p>We found that the two species differed in leaf morphology, and putative hybrids showed either intermediacy or a bias to <em>O. diversifolia</em>. Parental taxa formed two genetically distinct clusters, while populations in the hybrid zone consisted of both parental forms and various admixed individuals, exhibiting a bimodal pattern. The hybrid zone was coupled to ecological transitions of both microhabitat (i.e., the slope) and macroclimatic conditions. However, the genetic clines were significantly narrower than the environmental cline.</p> <p>Our results indicate that endogenous selection can be primarily responsible for maintaining the hybrid zone, while local adaptation accounts for the position of the zone. We further suggest the probable outcome of hybridization could be introgression.</p>

Aligned and curated mtDNA sequences from: Ancient DNA of narrow-headed voles reveals common features of the Late Pleistocene population dynamics in cold-adapted small mammals
<p><span>Narrow-headed vole, together with collared lemming and common vole, was the most abundant small mammal species across Eurasian Late Pleistocene steppe-tundra environments. Previous ancient DNA studies of </span><span>the latter</span><span> </span><span>two</span><span> revealed dynamic past population histories shaped by climatic fluctuations. To investigate the extent to which species with similar adaptations share common evolutionary </span><span>histories,</span><span> we generated a dataset comprising mitochondrial genomes of 139 ancient and 6 modern narrow-headed voles from multiple sites across Europe and north-</span><span>western</span><span> Asia and covering the last ca. 100 thousand years (ka). We inferred Bayesian time-aware phylogenies using 11 </span><span>radiocarbon-dated</span><span> samples for calibration of the molecular clock. We found that across the three </span><span>species,</span><span> divergence of the main mtDNA lineages occurred during Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 7 and MIS 5, suggesting a common response </span><span>of species adapted to open habitat to the interglacial environments. </span><span>In European narrow-headed voles, we identified multiple </span><span>time-structured</span><span> mtDNA lineages, implying lineage turnovers. Timing of some of these turnovers was synchronous across all three </span><span>species,</span><span> allowing us to identify the main drivers of the Late Pleistocene dynamics of steppe- and cold-adapted species.</span></p>

Tectona grandis: Narrow Genetic Base? A New Perspective on the Genetic Variability of Teak
Teak (Tectona grandis Linn. f.) is considered one of the most expensive hardwoods in the world. The dispersion of the species over the years has taken the teak beyond its origin centers and little is known about the genetic origin and genetic variability. This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity and population structure existing in a teak germplasm bank collection in Brazil. DNA was extracted from young leaves and each sample were genotyped by whole genome sequencing at 8x of coverage, the sequencing were aligned using the genome at NCBI, and SNPcalls and quality control were made. To study the population structure of the genotypes, Bayesian variational inference was used via fastStructure, the phylogenetic tree was based on the modified Euclidean distance and the clustering by the UPGMA hierarchical method. Genetic diversity was analyzed based on the pairwise genetic divergence (Fst) of Weir and Cockerham. Genotyping by sequencing resulted in a database of approximately 1.4 million of variations SNPs were used for analysis. It was possible to identify four subpopulations with genetic variability between and within the subpopulations, so this study made it possible to confirm the existence of genetic variability in teak, contrary to what was expected.

Data for: Aspects of distribution, abundance, habitat, and life history of the Caddo Madtom (Noturus taylori), a narrow endemic of the Ouachita Highlands
<p>The Caddo Madtom, <em>Noturus</em> <em>taylori</em>, is a small catfish endemic to the Ouachita Mountain ecoregion in Arkansas, with habitat altered by land use practices and reservoir dams. We examined aspects of distribution, abundance, habitat, and life history of <em>N. taylori</em> during seasonal sampling from winter 2016 through fall 2017. Our sampling data were concordant with previous studies that suggested <em>N. taylori</em> is more widespread and has higher catch per unit effort in the Caddo River drainage when compared to the upper Ouachita River drainage. We did not detect <em>N. taylori</em> in the Little Missouri River drainage, where it is presumed extirpated. A total of 370 individuals ranging from 14–76 mm (mean = 45.1 mm) standard length (SL) were collected during seasonal samples. Length-frequency analyses estimated a maximum age of 3 years for <em>N. taylori</em>, and we identified three discernable age classes with the emergence of young-of-year (age 0 cohort) in summer: age 0 (up to ~40 mm SL); age 1 (~41–60 mm SL); and age 2+ (>60 mm SL). Sites where <em>N. taylori</em> was captured had an average depth of 20.6 cm, an average base velocity of 0.18 m/sec, and were dominated primarily by a mix of gravel, pebble, and cobble. Despite the relatively higher abundances of <em>N. taylori</em> in the Caddo River, we recommend that long-term, periodic monitoring of <em>N. taylori</em> would be an important conservation tool to assess potential future changes in distribution, habitat, occurrence, and abundance. Future studies that implement occupancy and habitat suitability modeling are needed to better understand suitable and preferred habitat of <em>N. taylori</em>.</p>

<p>These are the final photometric quantities measured in the work "Ages and metallicities of stellar clusters using S-PLUS narrow-band integrated photometry: the Small Magellanic Cloud". The raw S-PLUS images are available upon request to the corresponding author. Nevertheless, the complete S-PLUS data will become publicly available alongside the next data release, scheduled for 2023.</p>
Sideways maneuvers enable narrow aperture negotiation by free-flying hummingbirds
<p>Many birds routinely fly fast through dense vegetation characterized by variably sized structures and voids. Successfully negotiating these cluttered environments requires maneuvering through narrow constrictions between obstacles. We show that Anna's Hummingbirds (<em>Calypte anna</em>) can negotiate apertures less than one wingspan in diameter using a novel sideways maneuver that incorporates continuous, bilaterally asymmetric wing motions. Crucially, this maneuver allows hummingbirds to continue flapping as they negotiate the constriction. Even smaller openings are negotiated via a faster ballistic trajectory characterized by tucked and thus non-flapping wings, which reduces force production and increases descent rate relative to the asymmetric technique. Hummingbirds progressively shift to the swept method as they perform hundreds of consecutive transits, suggesting increased locomotor performance with task familiarity. Initial use of the slower asymmetric transit technique may allow birds to better assess upcoming obstacles and voids, thereby reducing the likelihood of subsequent collisions. Repeated disruptions of normal wing kinematics as birds negotiate tight apertures may determine the limits of flight performance in structurally complex environments. These strategies for aperture transit and associated flight trajectories can inform designs and algorithms for small aerial vehicles flying within cluttered environments. </p>
