Ohio Miami University reservoir water chemistry and foodweb data 1992-2010

This research examines how landscapes (watersheds) and food webs interact to regulate ecosystems, focusing on reservoirs of the Midwest USA. This research is collaborative with two other Miami faculty, María González and Bill Renwick, and many students. We are examining how watersheds and omnivorous fish influence lakes along a gradient of watershed land use, ranging from mostly forested watersheds to those that are nearly entirely agricultural. Data provided by Mike/Maria include dissolved nutrients, suspended sediments, DOC, temperature/oxygen profiles, and water clarity from 1992-2010 with frequency and duration of sampling varying among reservoirs. sampling was typically conducted at two sites: (a) a shallow ‘inflow’ cite at the upstream area of a reservoir where the inflowing lotic system is transitioning to a more lentic one, and a deeper ‘outflow’ site just upstream of the dam. Most samples for water chemistry analysis were collected with integrated samplers from the euphotic zone or epilimnion (which usually are the same for these lakes - Vanni comment). For most of our sampling (all the Acton sampling and other sampling done by MU), we measured the depth of the eophotic zone using a light meter (z_eup = depth where light = 1% of surface light). When the ODW collected samples, they did not have a light meter so we used the epilimnopn, which we defined as any depth where oxygen was > 2 mg/L. As I mentioned, because our lakes are pretty productive, oxygen concentrations are usually driven by phytoplankton production so the eiphotic and epilimnetic depths are the same. For some things, we take replicate integrated samples, and we run duplicates on both of those, for a total of 4 values. For example, for chlorophyll we take two samples (two bottles) and run duplicates on both and we label the samples 1a,1b,2a,2b. ….the data we sent you are always means of those values….’.

Substance Use Disorder Treatment Deserts in Southwestern Ohio, USA

<p>The opioid crisis is one of the most pressing public health issues facing Ohio, with an impact unevenly distributed across the state. The term &ldquo;desert&rdquo; has been applied to discuss geographical areas with limited access to goods and services (e.g. food desert). This work examined geographical barriers to substance abuse disorder (SUD) treatment, and explored the existence of SUD treatment deserts in Southwestern Ohio.</p> <p>The study domain included the 13 counties in Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Service&rsquo;s Cincinnati region: Adams, Butler, Brown, Clermont, Clinton, Fayette, Hamilton, Highland, Lawrence, Pike, Ross, Scioto, and Warren. Publicly available substance abuse treatment data was collected from government agency resources, pharmaceutical websites, and web searches between August 2019 and February 2020. Treatment deserts were defined&nbsp;as areas in the 13-county study area that were not within a 15 minute drive from a treatment center.</p> <p>The four geopackage (*.gpkg) files are spatial data files that represent polygonal areas considered to be treatment deserts for the three types of treatments (Naltrexone/Buprenorphine, Methadone, and Behavioral) and for any type of treatment.</p>

Data from: A new dissorophoid temnospondyl from the Allegheny Group (Late Westphalian, Carboniferous) of Five Points, Mahoning County, Ohio (USA)

<p>A small temnospondyl skull from the Upper Carboniferous Allegheny Group of Five Points, Ohio, is referred to a new dissorophoid, <i>Palodromeus bairdi</i> n. gen n. sp. The complete skull with mandibles is preserved in counterparts. It is characterized by (1) elongated slit-like choana, (2) postfrontal, postorbital, and supratemporal bearing a distinct ridge, and (3) reduced parietal only two-thirds the length of the frontal. Phylogenetic analysis confirms a dichotomy between amphibamiforms and olsoniforms and places <i>Palodromeus bairdi</i> at the base of the olsoniforms, revealing an early stage in the evolution of that clade.</p>

Measurements in flowing freshwater ecosystems taken in Ohio (US)

<p>Knowledge of ecological responses to changes in the environment is vital to design appropriate measures for conserving biodiversity. Experimental studies are the standard to identify ecological cause-effect relationships, but their results do not necessarily translate to field situations. Deriving ecological cause-effect relationships from observational field data is, however, challenging due to potential confounding influences of unmeasured variables. Here, we present a causal discovery algorithm designed to reveal ecological relationships in rivers and streams from observational data. Our algorithm (a) takes into account the spatial structure of the river network, (b) reveals the complete network of ecological relationships, and (c) shows the directions of these relationships. We apply our algorithm to data collected in the US state of Ohio to better understand causes of reductions in fish and invertebrate community integrity. We found that nitrogen is a key variable underlying fish and invertebrate community integrity in Ohio, likely negatively impacting both. We also found that fish and community integrity are each linked to one physical habitat quality variable. Our algorithm further revealed a split between physical habitat quality and water quality variables, indicating that causal relations between these groups of variables are likely absent. Our approach is able to reveal networks of ecological relationships in rivers and streams based on observational data, without the need to formulate a priori hypotheses. This is an asset particularly for diagnostic assessments of the ecological state and potential causes of biodiversity impairment in rivers and streams.</p>
