<p>This repository contains data accompanying the paper <em>Neural models can sometimes discover typological generalizations</em>, currently being submitted for publication. It contains the following information for 1295 different languages:</p> <ul> <li>language vector representations from a range of neural models</li> <li>automatically derived lists of affixes</li> <li>automatically derived lists of inflectional paradigms</li> <li>typological features derived from annotation projection, and statistics on dependency relations</li> <li>typological features derived from classifiers trained on language vectors and typological databases</li> <li>automatically derived word lists</li> <li>data needed for automatic evaluation of language representations (code in separate repository)</li> </ul> <p>Note that the multilingual word embeddings described in the paper are very large, and therefore distributed in a separate public repository.</p>

Repeated parallel differentiation of social learning differences in benthic and limnetic threespine stickleback fish
<p>Individuals can reduce sampling costs and increase foraging efficiency by using information provided by others. One simple form of social information use is delayed local enhancement, or increased interest in a location because of the past presence of others. We tested for delayed local enhancement in two ecomorphs of stickleback fish, benthic and limnetic, from three different lakes with putative independent evolutionary origins. Two of these lakes have reproductively isolated ecomorphs ('species-pairs'), whereas in the third a previously intact species-pair recently collapsed into a hybrid swarm. Benthic fish in both intact species-pair lakes were more likely to exhibit delayed local enhancement despite being more solitary than limnetic fish. Their behaviour and morphology suggest their current perceived risk and past evolutionary pressure from predation did not drive this difference. In the hybrid swarm lake, we found a reversal in patterns of social information use, with limnetic-looking fish showing delayed local enhancement rather than benthic-looking fish. Together, our results strongly support parallel differentiation of social learning differences in recently evolved fish species, although hybridization can apparently erode and possibly even reverse these differences.</p>
BSL-Hansard: A parallel, multimodal corpus of English and interpreted British Sign Language data from parliamentary proceedings
<p>BSL-Hansard is a novel open source and multimodal resource composed by combining Sign Language video data in BSL and English text from the official transcription of British parliamentary sessions. This paper describes the method followed to compile BSL-Hansard including time alignment of text using the MAUS (Schiel, 2015) segmentation system, gives some statistics about this dataset, and suggests experiments. These primarily include end-to-end Sign Language-to-text translation, but is also relevant for broader machine translation, and speech and language processing tasks.</p> <p>This dataset will be useful for translation between BSL and English, or for studies in BSL or English down to the phonetic level.</p>

A single neuron in C. elegans orchestrates multiple motor outputs through parallel modes of transmission
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Animals generate a wide range of highly coordinated motor outputs, which allows them to execute purposeful behaviors. Individual neurons in the circuits that generate behaviors have a remarkable capacity for flexibility, as they exhibit multiple axonal projections, transmitter systems, and modes of neural activity. How these multi-functional properties of neurons enable the generation of adaptive behaviors remains unknown. Here we show that the HSN neuron in <em>C. elegans</em> evokes multiple motor programs over different timescales to enable a suite of behavioral changes during egg-laying. Using HSN activity perturbations and in vivo calcium imaging, we show that HSN acutely increases egg-laying and locomotion while also biasing the animals towards low-speed dwelling behavior over minutes. The acute effects of HSN on egg-laying and high-speed locomotion are mediated by separate sets of HSN transmitters and different HSN axonal projections. The long-lasting effects on dwelling are mediated by HSN release of serotonin that is taken up and re-released by NSM, another serotonergic neuron class that directly evokes dwelling. Our results show how the multi-functional properties of a single neuron allow it to induce a coordinated suite of behaviors and also reveal that neurons can borrow serotonin from one another to control behavior.</span></p>
Supplemental data for: Parallel shifts in flight-height associated with altitude across incipient Heliconius species
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Vertical gradients in microclimate, resource availability and interspecific interactions are thought to underly stratification patterns in tropical insect communities. However, only a few studies have explored the adaptive significance of vertical space use during the early stages of reproductive isolation. We analysed flight-height variation across speciation events in <em>Heliconius </em>butterflies representing parallel colonisations of high-altitude forest. We measured flight-height in wild <em>H. erato venu</em>s and <em>H. chestertonii</em>, parapatric lowland and mountain specialists respectively, and found that <em>H. chestertonii</em> consistently flies at a lower height. By comparing our data to previously published results for the ecologically equivalent <em>H. e. cyrbia</em> (lowland) and <em>H. himera </em>(high-altitude), we found that the species flying closest to the ground are those that recently colonised high-altitude forests. We show that these repeated trends largely result from shared patterns of ecological selection producing parallel trait-shifts in <em>H. himera </em>and <em>H. chestertonii</em>. Although our results imply a signature of local adaptation, we did not find an association between resource distribution and flight-height in <em>H. e. venus</em> and <em>H. chestertonii</em>. We discuss how this pattern may be explained by variation in forest structure and microclimate. Overall, our findings underscore the importance of behavioural adjustments during early divergence mediated by altitude-shifts.</span></p>

Within and between population comparisons suggest independently acting selection maintaining parallel clines in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris)
<p>Parallel clines in traits related to adaptation in a species can be due to independent selection on a pair of traits, or due to selection in one trait resulting in a parallel cline in a correlated trait. To distinguish between the mechanisms giving rise to parallel adaptive population divergence of multiple traits along an environmental gradient we need to study variation, correlations, and selective forces within individual populations along the gradient. In many tree species, budset timing forms a latitudinal cline, and parallel clinal variation is also found in other seedling traits, such as first year height and fall frost injury. In this study, we set up a common garden experiment with open pollinated progeny from natural populations of Scots pine (<em>Pinus sylvestris</em>), with one large sample from single population (500 families) and smaller samples from across a latitudinal gradient. Budset timing, first year height and induced fall frost injury were first measured in a greenhouse. The seedlings were then planted in the field, where survival and height were measured at the age of nine years as fitness proxies. We compared between and within population variation and genetic correlations of these three seedling traits, and estimated selection gradients at the family level in our main population, taking into account the potential effects of seed weight. Between population genetic correlations between seedling traits were high (0.76-0.95). Within population genetic correlations in the main population were lower (0.14-0.35), as in other populations (0.10-0.39). Within population, extensive adaptive variation persists in the seedling traits, in line with rather weak selection gradients, yet maintaining the clines. Although our sampling does not cover the whole cline equally, the results suggest that the individual clines in these traits are maintained by largely independently acting selection, which results in fewer constraints in adaptation under changing climate.</p>
