Data from: Implications of survey effort on estimating demographic parameters of a long-lived marine top predator

Effective management of wildlife populations rely on knowledge of their abundance, survival and reproductive rates. Maintaining long-term studies capable of estimating demographic parameters for long-lived, slow reproducing species is challenging. Insights into effects of research intensity on the statistical power to estimate demographic parameters is limited. Here, we investigate implications of survey effort on estimating abundance, home range sizes and reproductive output of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus), using a three-year sub-sample of a long-term, capture-recapture study off Bunbury, Western Australia. Photo-identification on individual dolphins were collected following Pollock's Robust Design, where seasons were defined as 'primary periods', each consisting of multiple 'secondary periods'. The full dataset consisted of 12 primary periods and 72 secondary periods, resulting in the study area being surveyed 24 times/year. We simulated reduced survey effort by randomly removing one, two or three secondary periods per primary period. Capture-recapture models were used to assess the effect of survey intensity on the power to detect trends in population abundance, while individual dolphin sighting histories were used to assess the ability to conduct home range analyses. We used sighting records of adult females and their calving histories to assess survey effort on quantifying reproductive output. A 50% reduction in survey effort resulted in: i) up to a 36% decline in population abundance at the time of detection; ii) a reduced ability to estimate home range sizes, by increasing the time for individuals to be sighted on >30 occasions (an often-used metric for home range analyses) from 7.74 to 15.46 years; and iii) 33%, 24% and 33% of annual calving events going undocumented in their year of birth. Results clearly illustrate the importance of survey effort on the ability to assess demographic parameters with clear implications for population viability analyses, population forecasting and conservation efforts to manage human-wildlife interactions.

Threshold models improve estimates of molt parameters in datasets with small sample sizes

<p>The timing of events in birds' annual cycles is important to understanding life history evolution and response to global climate change. Molt timing is often measured as an index of the sum of grown feather proportion or mass within the primary flight feathers.  The distribution of these molt data over time has proven difficult to model with standard linear models. The parameters of interest are at change points in model fit over time, and so least squares regression models that assume molt is linear violate the assumption of even variance.  This has led to the introduction of other nonparametric models to estimate molt parameters. Hinge models directly estimate changes in model fit, and have been used in many systems to find change points in data distributions. Here, we apply a hinge model to molt timing, through the introduction of a double-hinge threshold model. We then examine its performance in comparison to current models using simulated and empirical data. We find that the Underhill-Zuchinni (UZ) and Pimm models perform well under many circumstances, and appears to outperform the threshold model in datasets with very high variance. The double-hinge threshold model outperforms the UZ model at low sample sizes of birds in active molt, and shorter molt durations, and provides more realistic confidence intervals at small sample sizes.   </p>

High resolution sea state parameters estimated from SAR imagery at Herschel Island, Qikiqtaruk, Yukon, Canada

<p>Sea state parameters such as significant wave height were estimated using the empirical CWAVE_EX algorithm.<br> The aim of the data acquisition was to overcome the lack of in-situ data on significant wave heights in the Arctic by using remote sensing data.<br> Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images from the TerraSAR-X (TS-X) and TanDEM-X (TD-X) satellites were used to obtain high spatial resolution sea state information around Herschel Island, Qikiqtaruk, Yukon, Canada. All ice-free scenes were processed from the entire archive of TS-X/TD-X StripMap mode imagery with a coverage of approximately 30 km x 50 km acquired between 2009 and 2020. For each SAR scene, a sea state file was created as a tab-separated text file in the coordinate reference system EPSG: 4328 - WGS84.<br> The dataset was used to analyse wave heights in the nearshore zone according to spatial variability, seasonality and wind conditions.</p> <p>For more details please refer to Brembach, K., Pleskachevsky, A., Lantuit, H.
