Effects of frequent fire and mowing on resprouting shrubs of Florida, USA, scrub

Background: Resprouting is an effective strategy for persistence of perennial plants after disturbances such as fire. However, can disturbances be so frequent that they limit resprouting? We examined the effects of fire and mowing frequency on eight species of resprouting shrubs (three oaks (Quercus chapmanii, Q. inopina, Q. geminata), three ericaceous species (Lyonia fruticosa, L. lucida, Vaccinium myrsinites), and two palmettos (Sabal etonia, Serenoa repens)) in Florida scrub using a factorial field experiment. We burned or mowed plots at four disturbance return intervals (DRI) – either annually, biennially, every three years, or once in six years (with all plots being treated in the sixth year to control for time-since-disturbance). We analyzed plant growth responses (height, aboveground biomass, number of stems) based on sampling pre-treatment, and six months, one, two, and four years post-treatment. We also measured non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) and soil properties to evaluate these factors as potential drivers of resprouting responses. Results: Fire temperatures were hot (mean maxima 414-698 C among burn days), typical of larger fires in Florida scrub. Plant biomass and heights were affected by DRI (being suppressed by frequent disturbance, especially initially) and varied among species with palmettos recovering biomass faster and species within the same genus generally showing similar responses. Biomass recovery in mown vs. burned treatments showed comparable effects of DRI and similar trajectories over time. Numbers of stems were affected by DRI, disturbance type, and species. Stems increased after disturbances, especially with less frequent disturbances and mowing, and subsequently declined over time. NSC concentrations varied among species and over time and was positively related to biomass. Data from: Burden of scrub typhus among patients with acute febrile illness attending tertiary care hospital in Chitwan, Nepal

<p><span><b>Objectives:  </b>Scrub  typhus  is  an  emerging  neglected  tropical  disease,  reported  from  many  parts  of  Asia  including  Nepal.  This  study  aims  to  determine  the  seroepidemiology  of  scrub  typhus  among  febrile  patients  attending  Chitwan  Medical  College  Teaching  Hospital  (CMCTH),  Bharatpur,  Nepal.</span></p> <p><span><b>Study design and setting:  </b>This  was  a  hospital  laboratory  based  prospective  study  conducted  in  CMC-TH  (a  600-bed  hospital)  located  in  Bharatpur,  Chitwan  district  of  Nepal.</span></p> <p><b>Participants</b><b>: </b> A  total  of  1797  patients  visiting  CMC-TH  with  acute  febrile  illness  (temperature  more  than  38<sup>0</sup>C)  were  enrolled  in  this  study.</p> <p><span><b>Methods:  </b>A  total  of  1797  blood  samples  were  collected  from  patients  presenting  with  acute  febrile  illness.  The  samples  were  processed  for  detection  of  antibody  for  scrub  typhus  by  Enzyme  Linked  Immunosorbent  Assay  (ELISA)  for  specific  immunoglobulin  M  (IgM)  antibody  and  Weil-Felix  test.  </span></p> <p><span><b>Results:  </b>Out  of  1797  serum  sample  of  febrile  patients,  524  (29.2%)  were  scrub  typhus  positive.  Maximum  seropositive  cases  were  from  Chitwan  district  271  (51.7%)  with  predominance  among  females  314  (35.9%).  Scrub  typhus  was  common  among  age  group  51-60  years  (37.2%)  and  farmers  182  (37.8%).  Highest<b>  </b>seropositivity  was  found  in  July  60  (57.7%).  Fever  was  common  clinical  symptom.  Thrombocytopenia  was  seen  in  386  (73.7%)  and  raised  transaminase  AST  399  (76.1%)  among  seropositive  cases.  Weil-Felix  test  positive were  397  (22.1%)  and  IgM  ELISA  524  (29.2%).  The  correlation  between  IgM  ELISA  and  Weil-Felix  test  showed  statistically  significant  association  (r  =  0.319,  p&lt;0.001).</span></p> <p><span><b>Conclusion:  </b>High  prevalence  of  scrub  typhus  implies  that  acute  febrile  patients  should  be  investigated  for  scrub  typhus  with  high  priority.  There  is  utmost  need  of   reliable  diagnostic  facilities  at  all  level  of  health  care  system  in  Nepal.  Infection  with  scrub  typhus  was  found  high  and  this  calls  for  an  urgent  need  to  introduce  vaccine  against  scrub  typhus.  More  sustain  and  vigorous  awareness  programs  need  to  be  promoted  for  early  diagnosis,  treatment  and  control.  </span></p>

Carbon flux and gross primary production of a scrub of Mexico

<p><span>Vegetation fixes C in its biomass through photosynthesis or might release it into the atmosphere through respiration. Measurements of these fluxes would help us to understand ecosystem functioning. This data is related to carbon flux (NEE) colected with the eddy covariance technique (EC_Data). The NEE is the balance between gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (Reco) both calculated using the recent R package Reddyproc (Code Reddyproc). The database also include estimates of GPP of MOD17A2H product of MODIS Satellite for four pixels of a site with scrub vegetation in Mexico (GPP_MODIS). The programming code include the pre-procecing of NEE and the Theil-Sen and Linear model to describe the relationship between GPP of EC and GPP of MODIS (Code Theil-Sen).</span></p>

Non-native plant removal and high rainfall years promote post-fire recovery of Artemisia californica in southern California sage scrub

<p>Non-native plant invasions, changes in fire regime, and increasing drought stress all pose important threats to biodiverse mediterranean-climate shrublands. These factors can also interact, with fire and drought potentially creating opportunities for non-native species to establish dominance before native shrubs recover. We carried out post-fire demographic monitoring of the common native shrub <i>Artemisia californica</i> in a southern California sage scrub fragment for 7 years, including several with very low rainfall. Experimental removals of non-native plants were included for the first 4 years. We quantified <i>A. californica</i> post-fire crown resprouting and seedling emergence, and tested effects of precipitation, non-native plants, and their interactions on seedling and adult survival. Only 7 <i>A. californica</i> were confirmed as resprouts; almost all individuals established after the fire from seedlings, with 90% of emergence occurring in the second growing year after fire (spring 2015). Higher spring precipitation increased both adult and seedling survival. Non-native grasses and forbs rapidly recolonized control plots, but the removal treatment reduced non-native cover by nearly 60%. For seedlings, non-native removal reduced the probability of dropping leaves by start of summer drought and increased survival both directly and through positive interactions with rainfall. Non-native removal also reduced mortality in smaller adult plants. By 2020, mean <i>A. californica</i> canopy area was nearly four times greater in non-native removal plots. These findings reinforce the high vulnerability of sage scrub habitat to post-fire loss of shrub cover and potential type conversion, particularly with increasing drought frequency and in stands and species with limited crown resprouting. Yet they also illustrate the potential for targeted management of non-natives immediately after fire to promote recovery of native shrubs in this increasingly endangered community.</p>

Survey of spatial associations of California buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum) and California sagebrush (Artemisia californica) in coastal sage scrub

<p>While models of species coexistence largely focus on how competition defines biological communities, over recent decades, a number of studies show positive plant-plant species interactions (facilitation) can also promote stable coexistence. The long-lived, co-dominant shrubs California buckwheat (<i>E. fasciculatum</i>) and California sagebrush (<i>A. californica</i>) share a well-documented positive association at the habitat level in their native California coastal sage scrub ecosystem, but mechanisms underlying their interactions remain unclear at finer spatial scales. Here, a hypothesis that <i>E. fasciculatum </i>acidifies CSS's alkaline soils and facilitates <i>A. californica </i>through amelioration of alkalinity stress is tested in a greenhouse experiment and association tests in the field. Greenhouse results demonstrate facilitation at early growth stages. In late growth stages, water competition is known to determine the shrubs' interactions with each other, but here, field observations of the shrubs in late growth stages show positive associations between <i>A. californica </i>and <i>E. fasciculatum </i>that have a positive linear relationship to<i> </i>increasing soil pH. These results highlight the importance of understanding lifecycle-long interactions among species in evaluating facilitation's impacts on community structure.</p>
