Survey of spatial associations of California buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum) and California sagebrush (Artemisia californica) in coastal sage scrub
<p>While models of species coexistence largely focus on how competition defines biological communities, over recent decades, a number of studies show positive plant-plant species interactions (facilitation) can also promote stable coexistence. The long-lived, co-dominant shrubs California buckwheat (<i>E. fasciculatum</i>) and California sagebrush (<i>A. californica</i>) share a well-documented positive association at the habitat level in their native California coastal sage scrub ecosystem, but mechanisms underlying their interactions remain unclear at finer spatial scales. Here, a hypothesis that <i>E. fasciculatum </i>acidifies CSS's alkaline soils and facilitates <i>A. californica </i>through amelioration of alkalinity stress is tested in a greenhouse experiment and association tests in the field. Greenhouse results demonstrate facilitation at early growth stages. In late growth stages, water competition is known to determine the shrubs' interactions with each other, but here, field observations of the shrubs in late growth stages show positive associations between <i>A. californica </i>and <i>E. fasciculatum </i>that have a positive linear relationship to<i> </i>increasing soil pH. These results highlight the importance of understanding lifecycle-long interactions among species in evaluating facilitation's impacts on community structure.</p>
Impacts of climate-driven changes in habitat phenology on dynamics of niche overlaps and spatial associations in a boreal waterbird community
<p>A fundamental, yet little explored question is if climate change has affected niche relationships and spatial associations of native non-invasive species in established local communities, potentially affecting interspecific interactions and community organization. Here, long-term (1991–2020) changes in habitat niche overlaps (HNO) and spatial associations (SA) were studied in relation to climate-driven changes in habitat phenology in a community of eight migratory waterbird species breeding on 37 lakes in southeastern Finland.</p> <p>Overall timing of ice-out (IOD) and within-season variation in the timing of ice-out (standard deviation of IOD; SDIOD) in lakes determine habitat availability for waterbirds during the settling phase. Previous work has documented that IOD has advanced and SDIOD increased during the study period, with species responding differently to these changes in their habitat use.</p> <p>HNO and SA varied considerably in the 28 species pairs during the study period. The effect of IOD and SDIOD on that variation was generally small. However, the direction and magnitude of the effects of IOD and SDIOD on HNO and SA varied considerably among the species pairs. Overall differences in the direction and magnitude of the effect sizes suggested that the impacts of IOD and SDIOD on HNO and SA were stronger in species pairs in which the species were more similar in terms of settling phenology and stronger for early settling species than for late settling species. Observed changes in niche relationships probably reflect changes in interspecific interactions and affect the possibilities for heterospecific information use in habitat selection. </p>

<p>Data underpinning the Current Biology publication "Habitat modification destabilizes spatial associations and persistence of Neotropical carnivores" (doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2023.07.064). Species detection data for 11 Neotropical carnivores obtained using camera trap methods across a gradient of human habitat modification. Cameras were deployed across 468 sampling locations distributed across nine study landscapes in Colombia. Site-level covariates detailing forest extent, habitat quality and proximity to key environmental resources are also provided. These data were implemented to assess spatial associations between sympatric carnivores across gradients of human habitat modification. </p>
