<p>This narrative tells the story of a liaison between a deer spirit and a woman, and<br> the troubles that came of it. The tale is one of many stories told by the Hupd’äh,<br> who live in the Vaupés region, straddling the border of Brazil and Colombia. Hup, the language of the Hupd’äh (lit. ‘person-pl’) belongs to the small<br> Naduhup family (formerly known as Makú; see Epps & Bolaños 2017); the speak-<br> ers of the four Naduhup languages inhabit the interfluvial zones south of the<br> Vaupés River and the middle Rio Negro. User stories for eCommerce systems
<p>This datasets provides 307 real-world user stories from 3 different eCommerce projects.</p> <ul> <li><strong>Project A</strong> defines a complete set of requirements for a B2C focused onlineshop of a publishing house who aims do sell his own publications directly.</li> <li><strong>Project B</strong> contains a partial set of requirements for a B2C focused onlineshop of a bookseller.</li> <li><strong>Project C</strong> includes a subset of B2C and B2B requirements for an online bookstore, supplemented by an eProcurement module designed to provide information and automation for industrial customers.</li> </ul> <p>Most of the user stories come with additional acceptance criteria, written in unstructured natural language.</p> <p>The user stories have been anonymized and the merchant's real names were replaced with neutral terms.</p> <p>This dataset has been used in our paper "From Bugs to Benefits: Improving User Stories by Leveraging Crowd Knowledge with CrUISE-AC" which has been accepted for presentation in the research track of the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) 2025 and will be included in the conference proceedings.</p> <div>The preprint of the paper is available on <a href="http://arxiv.org/abs/2501.15181" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arXiv</a>.</div>

Different proxies, different stories? Imperfect correlations and different determinants of fitness in bighorn sheep
<p>Measuring individual fitness empirically is required to assess selective pressures and predict evolutionary changes in nature. There is, however, little consensus on how fitness should be empirically estimated. As fitness proxies vary in their underlying assumptions, their relative sensitivity to individual, environmental, and demographic factors may also vary. Here, using a long-term study, we aimed at identifying the determinants of individual fitness in bighorn sheep (<em>Ovis</em> <em>canadensis</em>) using seven fitness proxies. Specifically, we compared four-lifetime fitness proxies: lifetime breeding success, lifetime reproductive success, individual growth rate, and individual contribution to population growth, and three multi-generational proxies: number of granddaughters, individual descendance in the next generation, and relative genetic contribution to the next generation. We found that all proxies were positively correlated, but the magnitude of the correlations varied substantially. Longevity was the main determinant of most fitness proxies. Individual fitness calculated over more than one generation was also affected by population density and growth rate. Because they are affected by contrasting factors, our study suggests that different fitness proxies should not be used interchangeably as they may convey different information about selective pressures and lead to divergent evolutionary predictions. Uncovering the mechanisms underlying variation in individual fitness and improving our ability to predict evolutionary change might require the use of several, rather than one, proxy of individual fitness.</p>
Data from: Whole-body variational modularity in the zebrafish: An inside-out story of a model species
<p><span>Actinopterygians are the most diversified clade of extant vertebrates. Their impressive morphological disparity bears witness to tremendous ecological diversity. Modularity, the organization of biological systems into quasi-independent anatomical/morphological units, is thought to increase evolvability of organisms and facilitate morphological diversification. Our study aims to quantify patterns of variational modularity in a model actinopterygian, the zebrafish (</span><em>Danio rerio</em>), using 3D-geometric morphometrics on osteological structures isolated from micro-CT scans. 72 landmarks were digitised along cranial and postcranial ossified regions of 30 adult zebrafishes. Two methods were used to test modularity hypotheses, the covariance ratio and the distance matrix approach. We find strong support for two modules, one comprised of paired fins and the other comprised of median fins, that are best explained by functional properties of subcarangiform swimming. While the skull is tightly integrated with the rest of the body, its intrinsic integration is relatively weak supporting previous findings that the fish skull is a modular structure. Our results provide additional support for the recognition of similar hypotheses of modularity identified based on external morphology in various teleosts, and at least two variational modules are proposed. Thus, our results hint at the possibility that internal and external modularity patterns may be congruent.</p>
Data from: Median-Joining Networks and Bayesian phylogenies often do not tell the same story
<p>Inferring phylogenies among intraspecific individuals often yields unresolved relationships (i.e., polytomies). Consequently, methods that compute distance-based abstract networks, like Median-Joining Networks (MJNs), are thought to be more appropriate tools for reconstructing such relationships than traditional trees. Median-Joining Networks visualize all routes of relationships in the form of cycles, if needed, when traditional approaches cannot resolve them. However, the MJN method is a distance-based phenetic approach that does not involve character transformations and makes no reference to ancestor-descendant relationships. Although philosophical and theoretical arguments challenging the implication that MJNs reflect phylogenetic signal in the traditional sense have been presented elsewhere, an empirical comparison with a character-based approach is needed given the increasing popularity of MJN analysis in evolutionary biology. Here, we use the conservative Approximately Unbiased (AU) test to compare 85 cases of branching patterns of cycle-free MJNs and Bayesian Inference (BI) phylogenies using datasets from 55 empirical studies. By rooting the MJN analyses to provide directionality, we report substantial disagreement between computed MJNs and posterior distributions on BI phylogenies. The branching patterns in MJNs and BI phylogenies show significantly different relationships in 37.6% of cases. Among the relationships that do not significantly differ, 96.2% show alternative sets of relationships. Our results indicate that the two methods provide different measures of relatedness in a phylogenetic sense. Finally, our analyses also support previous observations of the statistical hypothesis testing by reconfirming the over-conservativeness of the Shimodaira-Hasegawa test versus the AU test.</p>
