Estimating biodiversity using symbolic meta analysis

<p>Global species richness is a key biodiversity metric. Concerns continue to grow over its decline due to overexploitation and habitat destruction by humans. Despite recent efforts to estimate global species richness, the resulting estimates have been highly uncertain and often logically inconsistent. Estimates lower down either the taxonomic or geographic hierarchies are often larger than those above. Further, these estimates have been typically represented in a wide variety of forms, including intervals (a, b), point estimates with no uncertainty, and point estimates with either symmetrical or asymmetrical bounds, making it difficult to combine information across different studies. Here, we develop a Bayesian hierarchical approach to estimate global species richness (we estimate 22.02m species; 95% HPD interval (10.43m, 35.28m)) that combines 50 estimates from published studies. The data mix of intervals and point estimates are reconciled using techniques from symbolic data analysis. This approach allows us to recover interval estimates at each species level, even when data are partially or wholly unobserved, while respecting logical constraints, and to determine the effects of estimation on the whole hierarchy of obtaining future estimates for particular taxa at various levels in the hierarchy.</p>

ScRAP ID 3429 Canmore 34860. Pictish symbol stone. A rectangular, upright cross-slab carved in relief 2.7m high by 1.0m wide by 0.2m thick. One side bears a full-length ring cross, interlacing animals and angels. The reverse bears the crescent and V-rod, the double-disc and Z-rod. Birse Pictish Symbol Stone

Birse (St Michael), Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, Pictish cross-slab fragment Measurements: H 0.29m, W 0.13m Now built into the interior face of the garden wall at Birse Manse, near the church, first recorded in 1995. This small fragment appears to be part of a Pictish cross-slab. It is incised with a curlicue, probably the lower right portion of a cross-shaft, and a double-sided comb. A curving line above the comb is likely to be the tip of the handle of a mirror symbol. All edges are broken but the surviving carving is clear. The image has been reoriented to show the angle the cross slab would have been erected, in the wall the stone is on its side. Date range: eighth or ninth century. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Benchmarks for Comparing Binary-Level Symbolic Execution Speed

<p>This dataset contains a reproducible computing environment as well as a set of synthetic benchmark applications for comparing symbolic execution speed at the binary level of several symbolic execution engines supporting the 32-bit RISC-V architecture. Specifically, the dataset compares and supports the following engines:</p> <ul> <li><a href="https://github.com/binsec/binsec">BinSec</a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/angr/angr">angr</a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/agra-uni-bremen/symex-vp">SymEx-VP</a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/agra-uni-bremen/binsym">BinSym</a></li> </ul> <p>The benchmarks are designed to be easily extendable through the utilization of <a href="https://guix.gnu.org">Guix</a> (a functional package manager for <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-022-01720-9">long-term reproducible research</a>). Currently, the supported engines perform IR-based symbolic execution using binary lifting (BinSec &amp; angr) and direct symbolic execution of RISC-V machine code (SymEx-VP &amp; BinSym). The dataset compares these approaches by fully exploring synthetic benchmark applications (e.g. sorting algorithms) with unconstrained symbolic input values and calculating an arithmetic mean over multiple executions, which is then represented as a table and a plot.</p> <p>More information on using the dataset is available in the supplementary README file.</p>

Photographs of the bombed-out school of Addilal – symbol for three years without schools in Tigray (Ethiopia)

<p>On Tuesday 22 June 2021, the Ethiopian Air Force targeted the market place of Addilal in Tigray&rsquo;s Gheralta district (north Ethiopia). Fortunately, the bomb missed the market, but it fell on the school compound. There were no students in school, as all schools in Tigray are closed since 2020. Damages to the school buildings were considerable. Up to date, the bombed-out Addilal school stands unused, as a symbol for these three years without schools in Tigray. Here we share a six exclusive photographs of the Addilal school.</p>

Wester Balblair Pictish Symbol Stone

This Class I Pictish (300-900AD) Symbol Stone was found at a depth of 2 feet when a gentlemen was digging his garden at Wester Balblair, Beauly, Inverness-shire in 1969. The stone measures 2' 4" long by 1' 6" wide and 4 1/2" thick. The stone exhibits a crescent and V-rod and three oval symbols. A carved stone lintel with christian symbols on Via Codaccio, in Arcidosso, Grosseto, Tuscany. The building si connected to San Leonardo church and this lintel is a rectangular face architrave with incised decoration representing a cross inscribed in a circle, between a triangle and an elliptical sign representing possibly a fish. It dates to the second half of 12th c. on the basis of stratigraphic analyses. [source: M. De Falco 2004-2005, ref. AVM4, usm 207] Model was created in Reality Capture using 18 photographs. The Mt.
