Interlocked thin-ply reinforcements for improved fracture toughness and compression after impact

This dataset contains data showing the effect of interlocked thin-ply reinforcement units on the fracture toughness and compression after impact strength of CFRP laminates. For both the fracture toughness and the CAI experiments, tests were conducted on non-reinforced baseline specimens, as well as reinforced specimens. These experiments were conducted to test a reinforcement concept, consisting of creating reinforcement units by interlocking two thin-ply prepreg layers with a tab-and-slit geometry. These reinforcement units are then inserted between the plies of a regular composite lay-up.

This reinforcement concept was first presented at the 18th European Conference on Composite Materials (2018, Athens, Greece). More information on the concept can be found at: http://wwwf.imperial.ac.uk/aeronautics/research/pinholab/interlock-tabs/.

The fracture toughness section of this dataset contains both mode I and mode II data. The mode I data was acquired using DCB specimens, and the mode II data was obtained from 4-point end notch flexure tests. Force, displacement, crack length, and strain energy release rate during the test are provided for all specimens.

The CAI section of the dataset contains post-impact C-scans, as well as force, displacement, and strain gauge data from the subsequent compression tests.

Dataset for the publication "Reversing the magnetization of 50-nm-wide ferromagnets by ultrashort magnons in thin-film Yttrium Iron Garnet"

Dataset belonging to the manuscript "Reversing the magnetization of 50-nm-wide ferromagnets by ultrashort magnons in thin-film Yttrium Iron Garnet" published in Nanoscale Horizons, doi: https://doi.org/10.1039/D4NH00095A

Every specific folder contains a text file that explains the measurement parameters and file formats.

Abstract:

Spin waves (magnons) can enable neuromorphic computing by which one aims at overcoming limitations inherent to conventional electronics and the von Neumann architecture. Encoding magnon signal by reversing magnetization of a nanomagnetic memory bit is pivotal to realize such novel computing schemes efficiently. A magnonic neural network was recently proposed consisting of differently configured nanomagnets that control nonlinear magnon interference in an underlying yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film [Papp et al., Nature communications, 2021, 12, 6422]. In this study, we explore the nonvolatile encoding of magnon signals by switching the magnetization of periodic and aperiodic arrays (gratings) of Ni81Fe19 (Py) nanostripes with widths w between 50 nm and 200 nm. Integrating 50-nm-wide nanostripes with a coplanar waveguide, we excited magnons having a wavelength λ of ≈100 nm. At a small spin-precessional power of 11 nW, these ultrashort magnons switch the magnetization of 50-nm-wide Py nanostripes after they have propagated over 25 μm in YIG. We also demonstrate the magnetization reversal of nanostripes patterned in an aperiodic sequence. We thereby show that the magnon-induced reversal happens regardless of the width and periodicity of the nanostripe gratings. Our study enlarges substantially the parameter regime for magnon-induced nanomagnet reversal on YIG and is important for realizing in-memory computing paradigms making use of magnons with ultrashort wavelengths at low power consumption."

Thin blood smear images of red blood cells with rouleaux formation morphology and normal morphology

This dataset contains images of thin blood smear with normal red blood cell morphology and rouleaux red blood cell morphology. Ethical approval with approval number: NHREC/17/03//2018 was obtained from Kano state ministry of health. Blood samples from 100 malaria infected patients were collected from Asiya Bayero pediatric hospital, kano state, Nigeria. Thick and thin blood smear slides were prepared using field stain. To ensure there was no bias in slide preparation, slides used for hospital diagnosis prepared under limited and constrained conditions were used as such types of slides represent the true reality of malaria diagnosis in less developed countries.Thin blood smear microscopy was performed by an expert microscopist and each slide was labeled according to the presence of Rouleaux formation or not among others. Out of 100 samples collected, 28 samples had rouleaux formation morphology.

A 12MP iPhone 10 camera was attached to a microscope’s eyepiece. Pictures of different field of views for each slide were captured using the iPhone’s camera. For each slide, a minimum of 10 different field of views were captured. 616 images were captured for slides with rouleaux formation. To create a balanced dataset an equal number, 616 images were also captured for slides with normal morphology. To increase the size and variation of the dataset. 312 Digital images of thin blood smear slides with Giemsa staining collected from Murtala Muhammad specialist hospital were added. out of the 312 images, 156 had rouleaux RBC morphology and 156 had normal RBC morphology. Image capture was conducted in the morning, afternoon and evening and in different rooms with different lighting conditions to introduce diverse levels of illumination in the images The captured images from both hospitals had a size of 4032x3024 pixels. The background of the images were cropped to give a size 2500x2500 which were then sliced to give a final size of 750x750 pixels. The final data set consists of 12,356 thin blood smear images with rouleaux formation morphology and 12,356 thin blood smear images with normal red blood cell morphology. Different CNN architectures were trained for the binary classification of the dataset.
