Plant Biomass/Production/Consump. (FIFE)

The focus of this study was to quantify the effects of foliage removal by cattle on plant net primary productivity (NPP). The Vegetation Biomass, Production and Consumption at Selected Sites Data Set contains mean values and their variances. During the growing season of 1987, portable cattle exclosures were used to quantify above-ground plant biomass dynamics at each of four sites. All sites had been grazed each year and burned frequently during the preceding 10 years. Biomass was measured inside portable exclosures, outside exclosures (in unprotected vegetation), and inside permanent exclosures. Exclosures were moved to previously unsampled locations within a distance of 10 m after samples were obtained, and these remained in place until the next sampling date.

Biomass Allocation and Growth Data of Seeded Plants

This data set of leaf, stem, and root biomass for various plant taxa was compiled from the primary literature of the 20th century with a significant portion derived from Cannell (1982). Recent allometric additions include measurements made by Niklas and colleagues (Niklas, 2003). This is a unique data set with which to evaluate allometric patterns of standing biomass within and across the broad spectrum of vascular plant species. Despite its importance to ecology, global climate research, and evolutionary and ecological theory, the general principles underlying how plant metabolic production is allocated to above- and below-ground biomass remain unclear. The resulting uncertainty severely limits the accuracy of models for many ecologically and evolutionarily important phenomena across taxonomically diverse communities. Thus, although quantitative assessments of biomass allocation patterns are central to biology, theoretical or empirical assessments of these patterns remain contentious.

NACP TERRA-PNW: Forest Plant Traits, NPP, Biomass, and Soil Properties, 1999-2014

This data set contains measurements and estimates of leaf, tree, and soil data from six projects conducted by the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research and Regional Analysis- Pacific Northwest (TERRA-PNW) research group between 1999 and 2014 across forests in Oregon and Northern California. Included are standardized, integrated measurements and estimates of specific leaf area, leaf longevity, leaf carbon and nitrogen for 35 tree and shrub species derived from more than 1,200 branch samples collected from over 200 forest plots, including several AmeriFlux sites. Plot-level measurements of forest composition, structure (e.g. tree biomass), and productivity estimates, as well as measurements of soil structure (e.g. bulk density) and chemistry (e.g. carbon) are also included.

Data from: Soil carbon accumulation differences: allocation of visible plant biomass, carbon and nitrogen in two turfgrasses

<p><span>Carbon accumulation in turfgrass soils by plant material may be beneficial to CO<sub>2</sub> sequestration and soil health, but at high rates can easily lead to declined turfgrass quality (i.e. thatch and mat layer formation). In a field study it was investigated how the fraction of visible plant biomass of turfgrass (sub)species monocultures, with two or three varieties&nbsp; as monoculture per (sub)species, and its C and&nbsp; N concentration and CN ratio in this visible plant biomass in thatch, mat and soil layers contributes to C accumulation. In total three <em>Festuca rubra</em> subspecies; <em>Festcua rubra commutata</em> (Frc), <em>Festuca rubra trichophylla </em>(Frt), <em>Festuca rubra rubra</em> (Frr), and three Agrostis species; <em>Agrostis canina</em> (Acn), <em>Agrostis capillaris</em> (Acp), Agrostis stolonifera (As), were studied.&nbsp;The study was conducted on 3 years old turfgrass demonstration fields of two turfgrass seed companies: <em>Festuca rubra</em> subspecies samples were collected at a site of Barenbrug in Wolfheze (52&deg;00&acute;N, 5&deg;46&acute;E), and <em>Agrostis </em>species were sampled at a site of DLF in Moerstraten (51&deg;32&acute;N, 4&deg;20&acute;E), both in the Netherlands. Both sites were built on a sandy soil.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span>For every variety, cores of the top 20 cm of the soil including aboveground biomass were taken with a core sampler (diameter 28 mm). The core was immediately divided into 4 distinctive layers, thatch + aboveground biomass, mat, remaining upper 10 cm soil and 10-20 cm soil. Distinction of these layers followed the protocol of Evers et al. (2024). </span><span>Aboveground biomass was separated from the thatch with scissors. Sediment from thatch, mat, remaining upper 10 cm of soil and 10-20 cm soil was carefully washed out with tap water, after which the remaining below-ground (dead and living) visible plant biomass and aboveground biomass was dried at 65 &deg;C until stable weight and weighed. Total C and N analyses were carried out with a Vario Micro Cube Element Analyzer (Elementar, Langenselbold, Germany), from which C and N concentrations (in % of dry matter of plant biomass) and C to N ratios (CN ratio) were calculated.</span></p>

Plant litter influences the temporal stability of plant community biomass in an alpine meadow by altering the stability and asynchrony of plant functional groups

<p>The stability of a plant community is defined as its ability to resist and be resilient to changes. Plant community stability can be driven by a range of external perturbations as well as by plant community traits. Plant litter traits (species or mass) are widely recognized drivers for plant community composition and diversity changes in grasslands. Yet, the effects of litter traits on the temporal stability of plant communities in natural grasslands are largely unknown. </p> <p>In this study, a field experiment was conducted at an alpine meadow on the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau to quantify the effects of litter from <i>Elymus nutans</i>, <i>Kobresia setchwanensis</i> and <i>Ligularia virgaurea</i> on the temporal stability of plant community biomass at five different mass levels (0, 100, 200, 400 and 600 g m<sup>−2</sup>). The experiment was conducted over the period from the pre-growth to peak–growth stage between 2017 and 2019, during which temporal stability of plant community biomass was assessed in relation to plant community characteristics.</p> <p>The effects of litter on temporal stability of plant community biomass were mainly driven by the litter mass rather than the litter species. A hump-shaped relationship between litter mass and temporal stability of plant community biomass was found, with the highest stability under intermediate litter mass treatment (200 g m<sup>−2</sup>). A structural equation model identified this response was driven by the indirect effects of litter mass on the temporal stability of the biomass of the dominant (forbs) and subdominant (grasses) functional groups in the community and the asynchrony of plant functional groups.</p> <p>The results of this study demonstrate that plant litter traits are important drivers for maintaining plant community stability in natural grasslands, highlighting the importance of grassland management decisions (e.g., grazing intensity) relating to the quantity and quality of litter accumulation. </p>
