Quantifying phenology and migratory behaviours of hummingbirds using single-site dynamics and mark-detection analyses
<p>Nuanced understanding of seasonal movements of partially migratory birds is paramount to species and habitat conservation. Using nascent statistical methods, we identified migratory strategies of birds outfitted with radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags detected at RFID feeders in two sites in California, USA. We quantified proportions of migrants and residents and the seasonal phenology for each movement strategy in Allen's and Anna's hummingbirds; we also validated our methodology by fitting our model to obligate migratory black-chinned hummingbirds. Allen's and Anna's hummingbirds exhibited characteristics of facultative migratory behaviour. We also quantified apparent annual survival for each migratory strategy and found that residents had significantly higher probabilities of apparent survival. Low survival estimates for migrants suggest that a high proportion of birds in the migrant group permanently emigrated from our study sites. Considered together, our analyses suggest that hummingbirds in both northern and southern California sites partake in diverse and highly plastic migratory behaviours. Our assessment elucidates the dynamics underlying idiosyncratic migratory behaviours of two species of hummingbirds, in addition to describing a framework for similar assessments of migratory behaviours using the multi-state open robust design with state uncertainty (MSORD-SU) model and single-site dynamics.</p>
Tidally modulated temperature observed atop a drillsite at the Noho hydrothermal site, mid-Okinawa Trough
<p>These are the dataset used in a manuscript submitted to J. Geophys. Res. (AGU), entitled "Tidally modulated temperature observed atop a drillsite at the Noho hydrothermal site, mid-Okinawa Trough" by Kinoshita, M, K. Kitada and T. Nozaki. It is in revision as of June 10 2022. </p> <p>The authors of this dataset include those who organized or participated the expeditions and contributed to obtain the data shown here.</p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>We observed temperature variations over 10 months within a Kuroko ore (hydrothermal sulfide) cultivation apparatus installed atop a 50-m-deep borehole drilled in the Noho hydrothermal system in the mid-Okinawa Trough, southwestern Japan, for monitoring of hydrothermal fluids and in situ mineral precipitation experiments. Temperature and pressure in the apparatus fluctuated with the tidal period immediately after its installation. Initially, the average temperature was 75–76 °C and the amplitude of the semi-diurnal tidal temperature modulation was ~0.3 °C. Four months later, the amplitude of tidal temperature modulation had gradually increased to 4 °C in synchrony with an average temperature decrease to ~40 °C. Numerical modeling showed that both the increase in tidal amplitude and the decrease in average temperature were attributable to a gradual decrease in inflow to the apparatus, which promoted conductive cooling through the pipe wall. The reduced inflow was probably caused by clogging inside the apparatus, but we cannot rule out a natural cause, because the drilling would have significantly decreased the volume of hot fluid in the reservoir. The temperature fluctuation phase lagged the pressure fluctuation phase by ~150°. Assuming that the fluctuations originated from inflow from the reservoir, we conducted 2-D numerical hydrothermal modeling for a poroelastic medium. To generate the 150° phase lag, the permeability in the reservoir needed to exceed that in the ambient formation by ~3 orders of magnitude. Combined ground-based total ozone data at three Norwegian sites (2000 to 2020)
<p>Combined total column ozone (TCO) at three Norwegian sites (Oslo, Andøya, Ny-Ålesund), using three measurement techniques (Brewer (DS and GI), SAOZ, GUV).</p> <p>The daily means are composed of noon-averages (+-2h around local noon) for Brewer (DS and GI) and GUV, and of sunrise- and sunset averages for SAOZ.</p> <p>In Oslo and Andøya, Brewer DS measurements build the baseline, and missing measurement days are then filled with Brewer GI data and then with GUV. Cross-site Canopy Leaf Temperature and associated Environmental Data
<p>This dataset includes canopy leaf temperature along with meteorology, flux, and radiation data from 6 forest sites in North and Central America. Canopy temperature (Tcan) data are based on thermal images to understand how Tcan varies with Tair and with environmental conditions. Importantly, these measurements span multiple growing seasons and are near-continuous in nature, as they were collected by thermal cameras mounted on eddy covariance towers that also measured a wide range of co-located environmental variables, including Tair, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, short- and long wave radiation, soil moisture and temperature, and ecosystem-atmosphere exchanges of CO<sub>2</sub>, H<sub>2</sub>O, and energy. We necessarily averaged multiple leaves in each region of interest at each site, and we then averaged multiple thermal images into hourly data, so some extremes in Tcan are not captured.</p>
Photographic coverage of the Trou de la Féclaz site (Saint-Jean-d'Arvey, Savoie, France)_datasets
<p>The dataset described in this paper consists of 557 photographs composing the 2D photographic coverage of the rock paintings from the Trou de la Féclaz alpine site (Saint-Jean-d’Arvey, Savoie, France) with 14 pictures of the environment of the site and 21 pictures composing the general views of the rockshelter. This dataset is described in the datapaper published in <em>Préhistoires méditerranéennes</em> (Defrasne 2022). It was carrying out as part of a post-doctoral research at Aix-Marseille Université on the structure and chronology of the prehistoric schematic rock paintings from southern France and western Alps, a corpus today composed of 146 sites. PSnpBind: A database of mutated binding site protein-ligand complexes constructed using a multithreaded virtual screening workflow
<p>A key concept in drug design is how natural variants, especially the ones occurring in the binding site of drug targets, affect the inter-individual drug response and efficacy by altering binding affinity. These effects have been studied on very limited and small datasets while, ideally, a large dataset of binding affinity changes due to binding site single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) is needed for evaluation. However, to the best of our knowledge, such a dataset does not exist. Thus, a reference dataset of ligands binding affinities to proteins with all their reported binding sites’ variants was constructed using a molecular docking approach. Having a large database of protein-ligand complexes covering a wide range of binding pocket mutations and a large small molecules’ landscape is of great importance for several types of studies. For example, developing machine learning algorithms to predict protein-ligand affinity or a SNP effect on it requires an extensive amount of data. In this work, we present PSnpBind: A large database of mutated binding site protein-ligand complexes constructed using a multithreaded virtual screening workflow. It provides a web interface to explore and visualize the protein-ligand complexes and a REST API to programmatically access the different aspects of the database contents. Blank predetermination in the Iberian Acheulean: fact or fiction? Insight from the cleaver on flake assemblage from Casal do Azemel site (Leiria, Portugal) by a Geometric Morphometric approach
<p>The increase of data available for the study of the Middle Pleistocene in the Iberian Peninsula has favoured the understanding of the technological trends of the regional Acheulean techno-complex. This has features of Large Flake Acheulean -LFA- with a significant presence of cleavers on flake, a specific tool type that is of great cultural and technological value. Moreover, these tools are privileged to discuss the importance of predetermination in Acheulean assemblages. Following this reason, besides the traditional techno-typological approach, we perform 2D Geometric Morphometric Analysis (GMA) to explore this topic on the cleaver on flake assemblage from Casal do Azemel (Leiria, Portugal), a paradigmatic Iberian Acheulean site with a large number of cleavers on flake (more than 100 pieces), one of the largest collections of this type of tools in Western Europe.</p> <p>The results obtained note a strong degree of shape homogeneity and suggest that the different technological solutions underlying the definition of the distal cutting edge, or the intensity of secondary reshaping, do not produce major differences in the overall shape of the tool. Therefore, this homogeneity is a consequence of the existence of a specific pattern of support selection and/or is the outcome of the already predetermined nature of the chosen blank. These observations allowed to discuss the significance of blank predetermination in the Acheulean, highlighting the existence of highly structured technological and cognitive prerequisites.</p>

<p>We present here paleomagnetic and magnetic anisotropy data from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Sites U1507 and U1511 (Expedition 371, Tasman Sea). Data consist of three tables that contain: (1) the characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) directions, before and after correction for inclination flattening of magnetic remanence, for both sites (Table S2); (2) the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) data from Site U1507 (Table S3); (3) the anisotropy of anhysteretic remanence (AARM) from Site U1507 (Table S4).</p>
