CSM01 Seasonal summary of numbers of small mammals on 14 LTER traplines in prairie habitats at Konza Prairie

Data set contains seasonal summaries (spring and autumn) of the number of individuals of each species of small mammal captured (relative abundance) on each grassland trapline. Each record contains year, season, trapline and number of individuals captured of each species. These live trap records are based on daily captures during two 4-day trapping periods in spring (late February to early April) and autumn (early October to mid-November) for each of 14 permanent traplines established on seven fire-grazing treatments (two traplines per treatment). These seven fire-grazing treatments include three sites that are grazed by bison (1 unburned, 1 annual burn and 1 4-year burn) and four sites that are not grazed by bison (1 unburned, 1 annual burn and 2 4-year burn).

PRE02 Reproductive effort of Big Bluestem, Indiangrass and Little Bluestem on selected Konza Prairie LTER watersheds

This data set focuses on seed production, flowering stem mass, height, and population densities of three dominant prairie grasses: Andropogon gerardii (ANGE), Sorgastrum nutans (SONU), and Schizachyrium scoparium (ANSC) in selected Konza Prairie LTER watersheds. Data set includes measurements of flowering stem height (m), density (no. per sq. m) and production (grams per sq. m) and total seed weight (grams) and production (grams per sq. on 2 soil types (shallow and deep) in watersheds representing different burning-grazing treatment combinations. Specific watersheds sampled have varied over time. Current watersheds include: 001d, R01a, R01b, 002c, 002d, 004a, 004b, 020b, R20a, R20b, 0SpA, 0SpB, 0SuA, 0SuB, 00FA, 00FB, 00WA and 00WB Sampling is done once a year in October/November (end of growing season). MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Modeling the effects of selectively fishing key functional groups of herbivores on coral resilience; data for Cook et al., 2023 Ecosphere

These data and code were generated in support of the manuscript: Cook DT, Schmitt RJ, Holbrook SJ, and HV Moeller, Ecosphere. To investigate the impacts of selectively harvesting functional groups of herbivorous fishes on coral resilience, we used a dynamic model that is grounded by the coral reef system in Moorea, French Polynesia. Our model simulates the fraction of a reef occupied through time by classes of key benthic spaceholders (coral, two stages of macroalgae, and turf). Benthic and fishing dynamics are linked through the harvesting of two functional groups of herbivorous fishes. We utilize data collected on the abundance of fishes on the reef and in the catch in Moorea, French Polynesia to inform our model and to empirically explore patterns of fishing selectivity. These data and code were published in Ecosphere and were a part of the thesis of D. Cook (2023). This manuscript uses data collected by the U.S. National Science Foundation's (NSF) Moorea Coral Reef Long Term Ecological Research (MCR LTER) site under Grant No. OCE 2224354 (and earlier awards). Additional financial support to the MCR LTER site was provided through a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. The data included in this data package were collected on the North shore of Moorea, French Polynesia, from 2015-2023 to explore how dead coral skeletons (e.g,, left after coral bleaching events) influence critical processes tied to coral reef resilience. Together, these various datasets were used for analyses in the manuscript entitled "Changing disturbance regimes, material legacies, and stabilizing feedbacks: dead coral skeletons impair key recovery processes following coral bleaching", published in Global Change Biology. These data are in support of a publication Kopecky et al. (2024) Global Change Biology, and were a part of the thesis of K. Kopecky. The manuscript title and author list are as follows: Changing disturbance regimes, material legacies, and stabilizing feedbacks: dead coral skeletons impair key recovery processes following coral bleaching. Moored and bottom-mounted instrumentation (ADCP, CTD, thermistors, wave-tide meters) sampled year-round on the reef of Moorea Island, French Polynesia at LTER 4 fore reef site (FOR04). Sampling began in 2005. All data have been interpolated onto a 20 min grid. ADCP data are organized into 1-meter bins, measured as height from the bottom, to a maximum of 20 bins. All bins may not be filled, and although post-processing attempted to exclude data from bins 'above the surface', users need to exercise caution with the near-surface bins. CTD parameters include Pressure, Temperature, Conductivity, Salinity, and Density. The two moored CTD packages are located approximately 5 and 14 meters above the bottom, and there are up to 5 additional temperature thermistors spaced vertically along the mooring line. Note that the upper CTD and temperature thermistor data were terminated in January 2020. Bottom CTD was terminated July 2021. There are 2 bottom mounted thermistors in the vicinity of the mooring at 10 and 20 meter depth. A bottom-mounted wave-tide meter provides a measure of significant wave height and dominant wave period at a 2-hour sampling interval. Tide-related data may be calculated from bottom-mounted pressure sensor data.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Benthic Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR), ongoing since 2009

These data contain a time-series from sequential deployments of an ALW-CMP PAR sensor recording quanta of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) underwater between wavelengths 400 nm to 700 nm every two seconds. The sensor window is wiped free of algae periodically to prevent fouling. Deployments are three to six months in length. The sensor was mounted at 17 m depth on the fore reef, and at 2 m depth on the Backreef. PAR irradiance is measured as quanta in micromoles of photons per square meter per second.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: 3D photogrammetry improves measurement of growth and biodiversity patterns in branching corals; data for Curtis 2023, Coral Reefs

These data and code were generated in support of the manuscript: Curtis JS, Galvan JW, Primo A, Osenberg CW, and AC Stier, Coral Reefs. We collected manual and photogrammetry-based measurements of coral size and volume to examine which method best described short-term coral growth and links between coral habitat and biodiversity of CAFI (coral-associated fishes and invertebrates). This study was completed between August and December 2019 on an experimental array located in the back reef off the south shore of Moorea, French Polynesia. These data were published in Coral Reefs, analyses and full methods descriptions of this model can be found in the manuscript “3D photogrammetry improves measurement of growth and biodiversity patterns in branching corals”. Urban forest canopy cover, vegetation, and site characteristics, Twin Cities Metro Area, 2022 and 2023.

This data was primarily collected to assess forest quality within the Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) Metropolitan Area and to link above-ground and below-ground properties as part of the goals of the MSP-LTER Urban Tree Canopy research group. Here, we sampled vegetation on 48 circular plots with a 12.5 m radius distributed across 18 parks, registering the date of sampling, park and management agency names, the plot number, and geolocation (latitude, longitude, and elevation). The plots were randomly selected based on GEDI (Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation instrument) 2021 footprints in the MSP Metropolitan Area along accessible forested areas inside public parks, where the management agency allowed sampling. In each plot, we measured forest structure and diversity metrics, species names and abundance, DBH, height, distance from the plot center, the height where each individual canopy starts, and the relative position, exposure, and density of each canopy. We also measured understory plant structure and diversity in 4 subplots per plot, totaling 192 subplots. In these subplots, we surveyed all individual plants with heights over 20 cm, recording species names and abundance, plant basal diameter, plant height, and the total number of branches. Furthermore, we assessed the canopy openness above each subplot by calculating percent DIFN (diffuse non-interceptance) from fish eye pictures of the canopy at 1.3 meters over the subplot.

Sap-flux and associated environmental data from ash tree monitoring at four urban parks in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA, from May to November of 2023.

We measured the sap flux density of eighteen ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) of varying health and canopy conditions across four urban parks in the City of St. Paul, MN, USA in summer 2023 with a low-cost, compact data logger system we designed in-house. Although many ash trees in the city have either been killed or removed to control the spread of Emerald Ash Borer, chemical insecticide treatments are available for trees that are in early stages infestation. The trees selected for the research have all been receiving insecticide treatment for a few years, but their health and canopy conditions vary. We also have collocated temperature, soil moisture, and precipitation measurements at the same site for summer 2023.

Minneapolis-St. Paul Air Quality Sensor output 2024-2025

In the summers since field research at the MSP LTER began, wildfire smoke has led to record highs in Minnesota's Air Quality Index and there has been increasing public concern over the acute and long-term impacts of exposure to toxins in the air. In 2024, the MSP LTER acquired a small network of PurpleAir sensors to place in key areas alongside transplanted lichens that are also used in air quality research. In addition to Particulate Matter, the sensor models used here also are equipped with experimental VOC detection (Volatile Organic Compounds). PurpleAir sensors were collocated with lichens at two locations in St. Paul MN, one in Roseville MN, and one at Cedar Creek Ecosystem Reserve in Northern Anoka County, MN. After lichen material was collected, the sensors remained at the site to keep reporting to community air quality tracking maps. Data from the sensors is being regularly appended to a file on the MSP LTER GitHub page and is planned to be archived long-term.

Minneapolis-St. Paul Urban Tree Inventory

This dataset is a compilation of spatially explicit, species-specific urban tree inventories from across the seven-county Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) metropolitan area in Minnesota, U.S.A. The dataset was compiled to examine fine-scale patterns of tree biodiversity across MSP. Existing tree inventories were solicited from all municipalities, counties, park systems, and relevant non-profit organizations in the region for which we were able to find contact information, resulting in inventories from 35 municipalities, one county, one park system, three non-profit organizations and and two prior academic research efforts. The spatial and temporal scope of the inventories varies; for example, the inventories from some municipalities include data from a subset of only street trees at one timepoint, while other municipal inventories were continuously updated datasets with spatially comprehensive data for street trees in addition to some trees in parks and private lands. No inventory was fully comprehensive of all trees in an area. Data are assumed to have been collected between 2012-2022, although the timestamp on each data point is not explicit. Individual inventories were combined into one uniform database.

National Phenology Network tree phenology at Crosby Farm Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change study, 2021-2025

Phenology is the study of relations between climate and periodic biological phenomena, such as bud break or leaf drop in deciduous trees. Phenology is a leading indicator of climate change, and the response of urban tree species to climate can help inform how to manage for a more resilient, and adaptive urban tree canopy. This dataset contains tree phenology data from the The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MNRRA) Urban Affiliate Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change (ASCC) project located at Crosby Farm Regional Park. This dataset includes Individual Phenometrics, Site Phenomentrics, Status and Intensity, and Magnitude Phenometrics. This data was collected through mobile app submissions to Nature's Notebook and downloaded from the National Phenology Network Observation Portal, filtered by date range 01/01/2021 to 02/26/2024 and for Crosby Farm ASCC. Zooplankton abundance from net tows on Northeast U.S. Shelf Long Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018

This data package provides abundance data for zooplankton collected during seasonal transect cruises conducted as part of the Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) program, ongoing since 2018. Zooplankton are collected at standard NES-LTER transect stations (L1–L11) and the Martha’s Vineyard Coastal Observatory (MVCO) via oblique tows, using a 61-cm Bongo net with two mesh sizes (335 µm and 150 µm). The transect extends southward from near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, reaching approximately 150 km offshore along longitude 70 deg 53 min W, covering the continental shelf from nearshore to the shelf break, with sampling depths between 20 and 200 meters. Only the 335-µm mesh data is included here, as samples from this net are preserved on board and shipped to Morski Instytut Rybacki in Szczecin, Poland, where they are counted and identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. Counts of taxa identified are provided by the NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center. Samples from the 150 um are preserved for other purposes and will be published as a separate data package. This second version of the data package includes staged and unstaged abundance data in volumetric (100 m³) and aerial (10 m²) units from the 335-µm net. Supplemental tables provide metadata for the cruises and stations.

Rhizaria abundance, biomass, and trophic interactions at the Northern Gulf of Alaska LTER site during summer 2023 cruise KM2308

This dataset consists of Rhizaria abundance, biomass, number of individuals with captured prey, and number of individuals that interacted with algal cells, by taxonomic group. Taxonomic group ID characteristics and biomass calculation details are also presented. Sampling occurred on NGA-LTER research cruise KM2308 during summer 2023 at four stations and four different depth-intervals. Seawater samples were collected from CTD-secured Niskin bottles, concentrated by reverse filtration with 50 μm mesh, and analyzed back in the lab with inverted epi-fluorescence microscopy. Excel spreadsheets were converted to CSV files for preservation. These data are part of the Northern Gulf of Alaska Long Term Ecological Research (NGA LTER) program. The LTER program is a National Science Foundation–funded network of 28 sites nationwide that focus on the influence of long-term and large-scale phenomenon on ecosystems. Additional funding for sampling is provided by the North Pacific Research Board (NPRB), the Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS), and the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council (EVOS) via the Gulf Watch Alaska program.

North Temperate Lakes LTER: Groundwater Chemistry 1984 - current

Water chemistry is measured annually in 11 monitoring wells to characterize regional groundwater chemistry in the Trout Lake area. The chemical parameters measured include pH, conductivity, total alkalinity, disolved inorganic and organic carbon, total nitrogen, nitrae, ammonia, total phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, soium, potassium, chloride, sulfate, iron, manganese, total silica and dissolved reactive silica. Chemical data areavailable at a quarterly sampling frequency for some years. In addition (see related data set - Groundwater Level), water levels in 37 monitoring wells are measured several times per year. The wells are scattered throughout the Trout Lake hydrological basin and the data are used to calibrate and test regional groundwater flow models. Lake Metabolism at North Temperate Lakes LTER 2000

Recent literature suggests that for many lakes and rivers, the respiratory breakdown of organic matter (R) exceeds production of organic matter by photosynthesis (gross primary production; GPP) within the water body. This metabolic balance (GPP less than R; heterotrophy ) implies that allochthonous organic matter supports a portion of the aquatic ecosystems respiration. Evidence that many lakes are heterotrophic comes from diverse approaches, and debate remains over the circumstances in which heterotrophy exists. The methods used to estimate GPP and R and the limited extent of lake types studied, especially with respect to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations, are two reasons for differing conclusions. In this study, O2 and CO2 sondes were deployed during July and August, 2000 to measure diel gas dynamics in the surface waters of 25 lakes in the Northern Highland Lake district of Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The lakes were chosen to span wide and orthogonal ranges in DOC and TP concentrations. From these data, we calculated GPP, R and net ecosystem production (NEP=GPP-R). Over the broad range in TP and DOC among the lakes, diel CO2 and O2 changed on a near 1:1 molar ratio. Metabolism estimates from the two gases were comparable, except at high pH. Most lakes in our data set had -NEP, but GPP and R appeared to be controlled by different factors. TP correlated strongly with GPP, whereas DOC correlated with R. At low DOC concentrations, GPP and R were nearly equal, but at higher DOC, GPP and R uncoupled and lakes had -NEP. Strong correlations between lake metabolism and landscape related variables suggest that allochthonous carbon influences lake metabolism. North Temperate Lakes LTER: Primary Production - Trout Lake Area 1986 - 2007

Crystal, Sparkling and Trout lakes are sampled approximately fortnightly throughout the ice free period and water is returned to the lab for 3 hour in vivo incubations at ambient temperature. On an annual rotation, one of the lakes is sampled to the bottom of the photic zone (ie. 0.5% of surface light) while only the epilimnion of the other 2 lakes is sampled. All samples are integrated by thermal layer and 14C uptake is deternimed at 10 light levels using a metal-halide lamp. All samples are acidified and bubbled before liquid scintillation counting and uptake is dark bottle corrected. DIC and chlorophyll are also measured. Each P-I (photosynthetic uptake vs irradiance ) set is further reduced to 3 parameters (alpha, beta, and Pmax) based on the work of Platt 1980. In addition, thermal information and lake light transparency profiles (collected approximately fortnightly on these three LTER lakes) along with daily incident PAR at 30 minute intervals (measured at Noble F. Lee Municipal Airport, Woodruff, WI) provide input to a mechanistic model of lake primary productivity. Primary productivity for a lake is calculated from productivity parameters derived from the laboratory uptake experiments, coupled with the lakes' thermal and light regimes. 1. PI parameters: Productivity (P), as a function of irradiance (I), is described by a hyperbolic tangent curve with three parameters (Platt 1980). The three parameters describe the initial slope of the curve, the I at which maximum P occurs, and the decay rate of P, following maximum P. All three parameters are fit simultaneously to laboratory observations, using minimization of a least squares objective function (Matlab v. 6, Mathworks, Inc.). The parameters allow for the calculation of P, as a function of I, for a given thermal stratum of a given lake on a given day. 2. LEC: Light extinction coefficients (LEC) for each lake are calculated as the slope of the best fit line through the natural logs of observations of light at

North Temperate Lakes LTER: Manure Managment in Urbanizing Settings 2003 - 2004

The management of manure in urbanizing settings is a critical issue in the Lake Mendota watershed. The primary focus of this project was to examine the difficulties faced by livestock operations when managing manure on field systems that are fragmented by development. A survey regarding manure management was sent to Dane County, WI farms within the Lake Mendota watershed. The survey was conducted in two phases; March to May 2003 and March to May 2004. This dataset and accompanying survey entitled "Manure Management on the Urban Fringe" is available for users wishing to ascertain animal feeding operation size and management patterns in the Lake Mendota watershed. The data also include the distance from animal feeding operations to nearest urban centers via Euclidean (crow flies) and Road Network distances. Results suggest that exurban developments exert a strong influence on manure management routines of livestock producers. This influence is very local. Farmers in an urbanizing setting were more likely to encounter problems during manure hauling when the fields they were accessing were in close proximity to urban developments, regardless of their proximity to the urban core. The distances and times required to haul manure between the farm and the most distant field increased in the last five years. Land rental rates steadily increased at the same time that lease lengths shortened. Cash grain land tends to be sparse as livestock producers compete with developers for tracts on which to distribute manure.
