Data from: Long-term, not short-term, temperatures predict timing of egg-laying in European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris)

<p>Temperature is thought to be an important supplemental cue used by female birds to time breeding. It is widely assumed that late spring temperatures, within ~1 month of egg-laying, are most predictive of laying date, consistent with the idea that temperature is used to fine-tune timing of breeding to year-specific local conditions at the time of laying. Here we show that a relatively broad, long-term, temperature window (Jan 2 – Apr 4, 92 days; r2 = 0.73) best predicted timing of egg-laying in European Starlings (<em>Sturnus vulgaris</em>). A "mid-winter" temperature window was also strongly correlated with laying date (r2 = 0.58) but there was no support for an influence of short-term temperatures immediately before egg-laying. We assessed the relationship between ambient temperature and timing of egg-laying using three complimentary approaches: a) an "unconstrained", exploratory analysis, b) a traditional sliding window approach, and c) specific, biologically-informed temperature windows. Our results contrast markedly with the widely held view, in the avian breeding phenology literature, that immediate, pre-breeding, temperatures best predict short-term variation in laying because they allow birds to fine-tune timing of breeding to local conditions around the time of egg-laying. This means that mechanisms that allow integration of long-term temperature information must exist in birds – perhaps most parsimoniously involving direct effects of temperature on growth of the bird's ectothermic insect prey– even though these are currently poorly characterized.</p>

SECURES-Met - A European wide meteorological data set suitable for electricity modelling (supply and demand) for historical climate and climate change projections

<p>For the modelling of electricity production and demand, meteorological conditions are becoming more relevant due to the increasing contribution from renewable electricity production. But the requirements on meteorological data sets for electricity modelling are quite high. One challenge is the high temporal resolution, since a typical time step for modelling electricity production and demand is one hour. On the other side the European electricity market is highly connected, so that a pure country based modelling does not make sense and at least the whole European Union area has to be considered. Additionally, the spatial resolution of the data set must be able to represent the thermal conditions, which requires high spatial resolution at least in mountainous regions. All these requirements lead to huge data amounts for historic observations and even more for climate change projections for the whole 21st century. Thus, we have developed an aggregated European wide data set that has a temporal resolution of one hour, covers the whole EU area, has a reasonable size but is considering the high spatial variability. This meteorological data set for Europe for the historical period and climate change projections fulfills all relevant criteria for energy modelling. It has a hourly temporal resolution, considers local effects up to a spatial resolution of 1 km and has a suitable size, as all variables are aggregated to NUTS regions. Additionally meteorological information from wind speed and river run-off is directly converted into power productions, using state of the art methods and the current information on the location of power plants. As <strong>population weighted</strong> temperature and radiation represent values in geographical areas more relevant for solar power, it is highly relevant to use population weighted files. A year-round observation of δ13C of dicarboxylic acids and related compounds in fine aerosols: Implications from Central European background site

<p>Data for paper of following abstract:</p> <p>Isotopic analysis of specific compounds in aerosols can be a useful tool when studying atmospheric processes. Here, we present the results of stable carbon isotope ratio (&delta;<sup>13</sup>C) measurements performed on a one-year set (n = 96, Sep. 2013 - Aug. 2014) of dicarboxylic acids and related compounds in PM<sub>1</sub> at a rural Central European background site, Ko&scaron;etice (Czech Republic).</p> <p>The most <sup>13</sup>C enriched acid was oxalic (C<sub>2</sub>, annual average = -16.6&plusmn;5.0&permil;) followed by malonic (C<sub>3</sub>, avg. = -19.9&plusmn;6.6&permil;) and succinic (C<sub>4</sub>, avg. = -21.3&plusmn;4.6&permil;) acids. Thus, &delta;<sup>13</sup>C values decreased with an increase in carbon numbers. Azelaic acid (C<sub>9</sub>, avg. = -27.2&plusmn;3.6&permil;) was found to be the least <sup>13</sup>C enriched.</p> <p>A comparison of &delta;<sup>13</sup>C of dicarboxylic acids from other background sites, especially in Asia, shows similar values to those from the European site. This comparison also showed that C<sub>2</sub> is more <sup>13</sup>C enriched at background sites than at urban ones. In general, we did not observe significant seasonal differences in &delta;<sup>13</sup>C values of dicarboxylic acids at the Central European station. We observed statistically significant differences (p value &lt; 0.05) between winter and summer &delta;<sup>13</sup>C values solely for C<sub>4</sub>, glyoxylic acid (&omega;C<sub>2</sub>), glutaric acid (C<sub>5</sub>) and suberic acid (C<sub>8</sub>).</p> <p>The only significant correlations between &delta;<sup>13</sup>C of C<sub>2</sub> and &delta;<sup>13</sup>C of C<sub>3</sub> were found in spring and summer, suggesting that the oxidation of C<sub>3</sub> to C<sub>2</sub> is significant in these months with a strong contribution from biogenic aerosols. The strongest season-independent annual correlation was observed in &delta;<sup>13</sup>C values between C<sub>2</sub> and C<sub>4</sub>, the two dominant dicarboxylic acids. Therefore, C<sub>4</sub> appears to be the main intermediate precursor of C<sub>2</sub> throughout the whole year.</p>

Analysis of gaps in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) collections in European genebanks - supplementary data

<p>Species distribution modelling (or ecological niche modelling) was used to predict the effects of climate change on the future distribution of the wild relatives of Brassica napus L. in Europe and countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Modelling procedures followed the methods described by Aguirre-Gutierrez et al. 2017 (10.1111/ddi.12573) and van Treuren et al. 2017+2020 (10.1016/j.biocon.2017.10.003; 10.1016/j.gecco.2020.e01054).</p>
