Thirteen willow (Salix) species occur in southeastern Minnesota and often co-occur within the same wetlands. This high local diversity is challenging to explain since closely related species are often functionally similar and density-dependent interactions such as competition and susceptibility to pests and pathogens should limit their co-occurrence. However, if willow species are partitioning resources, or if they are phylogenetically structured so that closely related species rarely co-occur, then the impact of these density-dependent processes could be reduced. In this study, I examined the role of niche partitioning in maintaining local willow diversity by documenting species distributions in plots across a water availability gradient and comparing species physiology in the field and greenhouse. By taking a phylogenetic approach, I also investigated whether willow communities exhibit phylogenetic community structure and whether there is evidence for environmental filtering.

LiDAR-based Digital Elevation Model for Northampton and Accomack Co., VA, 2010

This dataset contains a bare-earth digital elevation model (DEM) for Northampton and Accomack Counties, Virginia based on data collected March 25-30, 2010 and processed to yield bare-earth elevations. It was created using LiDAR by Sanborne Geosystems under a contract with the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) with funding from The Nature Conservancy, USGS and the Virginia Coast Reserve Long-term Ecological Research project of the University of Virginia. Original LiDAR point data (approximately 1 meter spacing) was used to create a digital elevation model (DEM) with a cell resolution of 10 ft. (3.048 m). The DEM data layer is in the State Plane coordinate system (U.S. Feet) and uses the NAVD88 vertical datum with the 2009 Geoid for elevation in feet. As detailed in the included quality report, elevations are accurate to 0.65 feet or better. Water areas have been hydroflattened and may also include salt marsh areas that were inundated at the time of the flights. As a result, water areas were given a default minimum elevation below the minimum elevation measured by LiDAR over a given area and dependent on tidal cycle. Areas at or below this minimum elevation within the water mask may include salt marsh and tidal flats as well as open water. The elevation of the hydroflattening varies spatially. Salt marsh areas within the water mask were later determined by VCRLTER staff based on the following factors: (1) present as marsh (code 18) in the NOAA CCAP 2006 land cover layer and not included as an open water feature in the 2010 USGS National Hydrography Dataset, (2) minimum contiguous area of 1800 square meters, approximately equal to two 30 meter resolution CCAP pixel cells, and (3) includes extensive areas of salt marsh within north-south flight line “stripesâ€, primarily the seaside lagoons and marshes south of Parramore Island and the town of Wachapreague plus Chesapeake Bay marshes immediately north of Tangier Island (and excludes edge-only areas elsew

Set of European CO2 and CO emission grids representing emission uncertainties

<p>This dataset was prepared by TNO as a contribution to the H2020 project CHE and the H2020 project VERIFY. The basis is a high-resolution (~1x1 km) emission inventory providing CO<sub>2</sub> and CO (from fossil fuels and biofuels separately) over western Europe (2&ordm;W - 19&ordm;E, 47&ordm;N - 56&ordm;N). The reported emissions by European countries to UNFCCC (CO<sub>2</sub>) and to EMEP/CEIP (CO) have been used and where needed gap-filled or replaced with emission data from the GAINS model. These country-level emissions are disaggregated in space using a consistent spatial distribution methodology, whereas large point sources are listed with their exact locations. This approach is similar to the one described by&nbsp;Kuenen et al., (ACP, 2014). Emissions are reported per GNFR sector, with an extra split for road transport.</p> <p>The emission grids that are part of this dataset are a variation on the base grid, representing the uncertainty in the emission data. Each grid is equally plausible. The grids have been created using a Monte Carlo approach. The uncertainties in the underlying data used to create the base grid (emissions: activity data and emission factors, spatial proxies) have been collected (either from country reports or based on expert judgement). Through the Monte Carlo simulation these uncertainties, taking into account error correlations between some sub-sectors, are combined to create ten new emission grids. The spread in emissions between these emission maps gives an indication of the uncertainty in the emissions.</p> <p>The grid files (in .csv and .nc format) contain annual total emissions per grid cell for the year 2015. A separate file has been prepared for each ensemble member in the Monte Carlo simulation (indicated with M). It is important to note that 10 maps are not sufficient to describe the sometimes complex uncertainty structures, for example in the case of lognormal uncertainty distributions. The interpretation of the uncertainty based on these 10 maps should therefore be done with care.</strong></p> <p><strong>NB. Despite efforts to prevent negative emissions to occur in the grid maps, some negative values are still present. In local studies this might cause some issues, and we recommend to set negative emissions to zero in those cases.</strong></p>
