Data from: Long-term employment outcomes after epilepsy surgery in childhood
Objective: To analyse long-term employment outcomes in a population-based cohort of adults who underwent epilepsy surgery in childhood or adolescence and to compare the results to general population reference data. Methods: Prospective data on epilepsy surgery procedures performed on patients <19 years of age between 1995 and 2012 were extracted from the Swedish National Epilepsy Surgery Register. Five-, 10-, 15- and 20-year follow-up data were analysed. Patients aged ≥19 years at follow-up were eligible for inclusion. Educational attainment and employment status were analysed in relation to seizure outcome. Education and employment outcomes of seizure-free patients with a preoperative IQ of ≥70 were compared to general population reference data. Results: A total of 203 patients were included. The mean age at surgery was 13.6 years and 66% had IQ≥70. Of these, a majority had attained at least high school education five years after surgery. Employment rates were 44%, 69%, 71% and 77% at the 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-year follow-ups, respectively. Seizure-free patients were significantly more likely to work full-time. Educational attainment and rates of full-time employment of seizure-free patients were similar to the general population. A majority of patients with IQ<70 had attended special education and were reliant on social benefits. Conclusion: Long-term overall employment rates were higher compared to most previous studies on surgery in adults. Seizure-free patients with a preoperative IQ≥70 showed rates of full-time employment similar to the general population. Further research is needed to determine whether this also applies for occupational complexity and wages.
Investigating Non-Usually Employed Features in the Identification of Architectural Smells: A Machine Learning-Based Approach
<p>Architectural smells (ASs) negatively affect the maintenance and evolution of software at the architectural level. Most of the current approaches for ASs identification rely on the same small and well-known set of usually employed metrics (UE-Ms) with fixed thresholds. Machine learning (ML) is a promising technique for smell identification as algorithms can learn from a rich set of metrics/features, covering several characteristics of the software and incorporating a certain degree of subjectivity. This has been explored by building datasets with a robust and rich set of features, including not only the UE-Ms but also other non-usually employed metrics (NUE-Ms). However, usually the UE-Ms determine the output of the algorithms, obfuscating other metrics that have the potential to improve the classification. This also leads to inflated and difficult to maintain datasets. <br> In this paper, we investigate the accuracy of some ML algorithms employing only NUE-Ms. We scoped our study in the classification of two smells: God Component and Unstable Dependency. This investigation revealed a set of NUE-Ms that can be also used to identify these smells and the contribution of each one for the classification. Based on this information, software engineers can then build a final dataset just with the potential features. We also briefly present our tool, called InSet, that was used by academics and practitioners to identify smells in their systems. The feedback of them was used as the oracle to compare our tool to other approaches and good results were reached. </p>

Data from: Incomplete lineage sorting impacts the inference of macroevolutionary regimes from molecular phylogenies when concatenation is employed: an analysis based on Cetacea
Interest in methods that estimate speciation and extinction rates from molecular phylogenies has increased over the last decade. The application of such methods requires reliable estimates of tree topology and node ages, which are frequently obtained using standard phylogenetic inference combining concatenated loci and molecular dating. However, this practice disregards population-level processes that generate gene tree/species tree discordance. We evaluated the impact of employing concatenation and coalescent-based phylogeny inference in recovering the correct macroevolutionary regime using simulated data based on the well-established diversification rate shift of delphinids in Cetacea. We found that under scenarios of strong incomplete lineage sorting, macroevolutionary analysis of phylogenies inferred by concatenating loci failed to recover the delphinid diversification shift, while the coalescent-based tree consistently retrieved the correct rate regime. We suggest that ignoring microevolutionary processes reduces the power of methods that estimate macroevolutionary regimes from molecular data.
Data from: Catastrophic health expenditure according to employment status in South Korea: A population-based panel study
Objectives: Catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) means that medical spending of a household exceeds a certain level of capacity to pay. Previous studies of CHE have focused on benefits supported by the public sector or high medical cost incurred by treating diseases in South Korea. This study examines variance of CHE in these households according to changes in employment status. We also determine whether a relationship exists according to income level. Design: A longitudinal study. Setting: We used the Korea Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS) conducted by the Korea Institute. Participants: These data consisted of 5,335 households during 2009-2012. Outcome measure: CHE defined as health expenditures that were 40% greater than the ability of the household to pay. Results: Households with people who experienced changes in job status from employed to unemployed (OR 2.79, 95% CI 2.06-3.78) or were unemployed with no status change (OR 1.57, 95% CI 1.28-1.92) were more likely to incur CHE compared to those who were consistently employed. In addition, low-income families that either lost a job (OR 3.52, 95% CI 2.44-5.10) or were already unemployed (OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.29-2.16) were more likely to incur CHE compared to those with a consistent job. Conclusions: Given the insecure employment status of people with low-income, they are more likely to face barriers in obtaining needed health services. Meeting their needs for health care is an important consideration.

Relationship between mineral extraction, oil extraction, and agribusiness with employability, municipal gross domestic product, and voting data in Brazil
<p>This dataset looks at the number of Brazilian municipalities where mining is a key economic activity and those where mining is a key job provider. We also listed municipalities that have mining as both a main economic activity and the main employer in a given town. We have also generated maps to visualize the impact of mining in Brazil as a key economic activity and/or job provider. Similarly, we have listed the same information for all the municipalities that received oil royalties in 2019, and the top 100 municipalities whose wealth was mainly generated by agribusiness in 2022. By detailing the economic and employment situation in Brazilian extractive municipalities (mining, oil, and crops), we demonstrate that company towns in Brazil (locations that are highly dependent on one key economic activity for employment generation) are few. Extractive industries may no longer be labour intensive, although economic dependency may follow indirectly, such as because of tax generation. We also offer data on national elections to demonstrate that there is not a clear correlation between economic activity and voting patterns, which may be explained by low employability. The main objective of this dataset is to generate a discussion on the need to redefine company towns in Brazil.</p>

Spanish Sheltered Employment Centres dataset 2004-2016
<p>This document includes database for Spanish Sheltered Employment Centres. <span>The SABI<a title="" href="#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1"><span><span><span>[1]</span></span></span></a> database was used for extracting aconomic and financial data, which provides quantitative and qualitative information on Spanish companies. However, it was not possible to access the financial data for all sheltered employment centres. So, finally, the financial statements of 958 sheltered employment centres were collected from 2004 to 2016. This data represents 52% of all sheltered employment centres in Spain.
