Morphological phytoplankton counts for the SOMLIT-Astan time-series (2007-2017)

<p>The present text file includes morphologic microscopic counts&nbsp;for SOMLIT-Astan station (Western English Channel). Samples (250 mL) of natural seawater intended for the acquisition of microscopic counts were preserved with acid Lugol&rsquo;s iodine (Sournia, 1978, Guilloux et al. 2013), stored in the dark, and further processed between 15 days and up to 1 year after sampling.</p> <p>The morphological taxa contingency table was carefully examined to detect inconsistencies (e.g., abrupt changes in cell counts over the time series), and taxa for which identification was uncertain were grouped into broader taxonomic categories. For example, <em>Fragilaria</em> and <em>Brockmaniella</em> or <em>Cylindrotheca closterium</em> and <em>Nitzschia longissima</em> which are difficult to distinguished between each other, were considered in association in the same group of microscopic counts. The final morphological dataset consisted of counts of 146 taxonomical entities (taxa larger than 10&micro;m in size) across 185 dates from 2007 to 2017.</p> <p>Raw microscopic counts were regularly stored in a local MS-Access database and uploaded in the RESOMAR PELAGOS (<a href="http://abims.sb-roscoff.fr/pelagos/">http://abims.sb-roscoff.fr/pelagos/</a>) national database.</p>

Antarctic ice sheet daily surface melt detection from ASCAT (2007-2022)

<p>Antarctic ice sheet-wide surface melt detection using enhanced resolution ASCAT C-band radar scatterometer data. Data are daily temporal resolution spanning 2007-2022 and&nbsp;gridded at 4.45 km. Melt detection approach follows Trusel et al., (2012) with updates to threshold and masking procedures. ERA5-Land selected indicators daily aggregates for the Latin America region, 2007

<p>This deposit contains NetCDF files with daily aggregates from Copernicus Era5-Land eight selected indicators, covering the Latin America region, for 2007.</p><p>Each file represents one indicator aggregation for one month of the year. Inside each NetCDF file, the layers contain the daily aggregates.</p><p>For 2m dewpoint pressure, 10m u component of wind, 10m v component of wind, surface pressure, the mean function was used for aggregation. For total precipitation, the sum function was used for aggregation. For 2m temperature, the functions maximum, mean and minimum were used for aggregation.</p><p>Those files were created using the <a href="https://github.com/ErikKusch/KrigR">KrigR</a> package.</p>

Sediment organic matter at two stations in West Falmouth Harbor between 2007 and 2016

West Falmouth Harbor (West Falmouth, MA, USA) has been experiencing a dramatic increase in nitrogen loading from an upgradient municipal wastewater treatment facility since the early 2000’s. As part of a long-term study into the effects of this nitrogen enrichment, we have measured multiple biogeochemical processes at two locations within the harbor at either end of the eutrophication gradient - one in the well-flushed outer harbor (OH) and one in the inner basin closer to the dominant groundwater N source (Snug Harbor, SH). Samples of the top 4cm of the sediment profile were taken each year and analyzed for organic matter content via loss on ignition in the top 1cm and the sediment from 3-4cm deep. In a subset of years, intermediate depths were quantified, as well as samples below 4cm. Note, calculations for loss on ignition do not account for the weight of salt from porewater dried with the samples. A separate analysis found that salt accounts for between 3 and 19% of the dry weight of the sediment, depending on porosity. A calibration was done with percent carbon in 2009, showing a tight linear correlation between carbon content and organic matter across the entire site (%LOI = 2.71*%C + 0.2471).

Cover and rank percentile of initially dominant species in global Nutrient Network plots from 2007-2023

This dataset uses data from the NutNet dataset to examine the factors controlling how initially dominant species decay in dominance through time. We use data from all sites that had NPK and/or fencing treatments and pre-treatment when data was downloaded in 2021; 90 sites in all were used. Perturbations were NPK treatments (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and micronutrients) and fencing (vertebrate herbivore exclusion). Dominance was quantified as the rank percentile of a species in each year. Rank percentiles range from 1 (most abundant) to 0 (absent), with decimal values indicating relative rank - e.g. a species with rank 0.6 is more abundant than 60% of co-occurring species. Thus, only species with a rank of 1 in year o (pre-treatment) are included in this dataset. Covariates for examining rates of dominance decay include plot level initial and yearly cover values, both absolute and relativized; species provenance, lifespan, and functional group; site level climate variables and site richness.

High Frequency Meteorological, Drift-Corrected Dissolved Oxygen, and Thermistor Temperature Data - Lake Sunapee Buoy, NH, USA, 2007 – 2013

The Lake Sunapee Protective Association (Sunapee, New Hampshire, USA) has been operating an instrumented buoy on Lake Sunapee (maximum depth 33.7 meters) beginning on 27 August 2007. The environmental sensors on the buoy from 2007 - 2013 provided information on weather conditions, lake thermal structure, and oxygen dynamics, and their data can be used to calculate physical and biological variables such as buoyancy frequency, thermocline depth, thermal stability, and lake metabolism. The sensors were programmed to collect environmental data every 10 minutes. The buoy collected meteorological data 1.7 meters above the lake surface, including wind speed and direction (Vaisala WXT52 anemometer), air temperature and humidity (Vaisala HMP50), and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR Li-Cor). The water temperature sensors (TempLine thermistors from Apprise Technology in 2007-2010; NexSens T-node sensors 2010-2013) were situated at 0.5-2 meter intervals from 0-14 meters deep with the bottom sensor approximately 1 meter from the sediments. The dissolved oxygen (Zebra-Tech d-opto) sensor was deployed at approximately 1 meter below the surface and recorded oxygen concentration (mg/L), oxygen saturation (%), and temperature at the sensor (oxygen saturation is not included in this dataset). The buoy was anchored at approximately 15 meter deep water near the Loon Island lighthouse in the northern half of the lake, near the deepest part of the lake (43.390 N, -72.057 W). During the winter of 2007 - 2008, the buoy froze into the ice and continually recorded data with the uppermost thermistor below the bottom of the ice. In winter of 2008 - 2009, the buoy was damaged by ice and data were not collected until re-deployment on 29 July 2009. In subsequent years, the buoy was deployed from April or May to October or November at the Loon Island location and limited data were obtained during the winter months at the Sunapee Harbor (43.386 N, -72.081 W). Annual Point Count Breeding Bird Survey at Pepperwood Preserve in the California Coast Ranges 2007-2019

The Dwight Center for Conservation Science at Pepperwood is an ecological institute dedicated to educating, engaging, and inspiring our community through habitat preservation, science-based conservation, leading-edge research, and interdisciplinary educational programs. Our mission is to steward the life and landscapes of the 3,200-acre Pepperwood Preserve and to advance science-based conservation of ecosystems throughout our region and beyond. The Pepperwood Breeding Bird Survey was initiated in the spring of 2007 with the goal of establishing a set of baseline bird community data that would be built upon for years to come. Four transects (totaling 38 points) are surveyed annually using standardized five-minute point count protocols outlined by the Point Reyes Bird Observatory (now called Point Blue Conservation Science; Ballard et al. 2003) and the Handbook of Field Methods for Monitoring Landbirds (Ralph et al. 1993). Surveys are conducted by experienced volunteers during the breeding season starting in late April and ending in June, with each transect surveyed a total of three times. The Rogers Creek and Martin Creek transects were established in 2007. The Weimar Flat and Pepperwood Road transects were established in 2008 and 2012, respectively, to ensure comprehensive coverage across the various habitats that occur at the preserve including Douglas-fir forest, mixed hardwood forest, oak woodland/forest, chaparral, and open grasslands. Ecosystem metabolism estimates from Lake Sunapee, NH, USA and meteorological driver data at the Newport, NH, USA NOAA NCDC weather station from August 2007 – December 2008

In August 2007, the Lake Sunapee Protective Association (LSPA) deployed a buoy in Lake Sunapee, NH with a meteorological station, dissolved oxygen sensor at 1 m, and a string of thermistor water temperature sensors collecting data every 10 minutes. For this dataset, the Lake Sunapee buoy was located at a location near Loon Island all year (August 2007–December 2008) including during the winter. We used high-frequency dissolved oxygen, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), wind speed, and water temperature profile data to estimate daily rates of gross primary production, respiration, and net ecosystem production as metrics of ecosystem metabolism and carbon cycling. This dataset included under-ice data, and we compared seasonal changes in ecosystem metabolism rates for an entire lake year from the start of fall mixing in 2007 through the end of summer stratification in 2008. Under-ice and mixing periods are infrequently sampled due to logistical challenges and assumptions of low biological activity, resulting in limited understanding of the contribution of winter epilimnetic metabolism to annual carbon cycling. Using a continuous year of high-frequency dissolved oxygen data, we found that on average, under-ice net ecosystem production (NEP) was negative, in contrast to positive NEP for the spring and summer periods. Importantly, under-ice respiration was 1.2 times higher than summer respiration. Gross primary production was low but not absent under ice and increased during the last under-ice phase. Including winter metabolism estimates flipped annual NEP from autotrophy to heterotrophy, highlighting the importance of estimating metabolism year-round. Our methods for the data analysis are described in Brentrup et al. (accepted at Inland Waters) and were similar to Richardson et al. (2016) with some modifications described in the methods. Marcell Experimental Forest biweekly surface water and monthly porewater chemistry at Bog Lake Peatland, 2007 - ongoing

This data set reports the chemistry of surface and porewater water from the Bog Lake peatland in the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. Surface water has been collected about every other week since 2007 from a pool of water and sampling is ongoing. Once covered with ice, water was typically sampled once a month. Porewaters at five depths (0 to 2 m depths) have been collected about monthly from three different nest of piezometers since 2013, though never when samplers were frozen. Samples are measured for pH, specific conductivity, anions (chloride, sulfate), cations (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, aluminum, iron, manganese, strontium), silicon, nutrients (ammonium, nitrate, soluble reactive phosphorus, total nitrogen, total phosphorus), and total organic carbon.

Species persistence and mean rank abundance in global Nutrient Network plots from 2007-2019

This dataset uses data from the NutNet dataset to examine how temporal and spatial rarity are related, how temporal and spatial rarity predict species loss in ambient and experimentally perturbed plots. We use data from all sites that had NPK and/or fencing treatments with a minimum of five years of cover data when data was downloaded on August 2, 2019; 49 sites in all were used. Perturbations were NPK treatments (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and micronutrients) and fencing (vertebrate herbivore exclusion). Temporal rarity was assessed as the percentage of years a species was found in a plot (calculated in R script) and spatial rarity was assessed as the mean rank percentile of a species across all years in a plot (included in data table). We found that persistence (i.e. temporal rarity) was a better predictor than local abundance (i.e. spatial rarity) of whether a species would be absent in a neighboring plot, despite the rarity axes being correlated. Additionally, perturbations reduced persistence most strongly in highly persistent species and low abundance species, further suggesting these are unique dimensions of rarity.

Marcell Experimental Forest weekly or biweekly streamwater chemistry at the S1 catchment, 2007 - ongoing

This data set is a record of water chemistry for the stream draining the S1 catchment and bog at the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota. Stream water samples were usually collected every one or two weeks since 2007 as part of the long-term monitoring program of the S1 catchment. Some samples were collected weekly as part of the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) project, with monitoring starting during 2011 prior to initiation of experimental warming in that study (during and after 2014). Samples are measured for pH, specific conductivity, anions (chloride, sulfate), cations (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, aluminum, iron, strontium), silicon, nutrients (ammonium, nitrate, soluble reactive phosphorus, total nitrogen, total phosphorus), and total organic carbon. Occasionally, stable water isotopes and concentrations of ferrous and ferric iron have been measured. More values will be added as additional water samples are collected and analyzed (concentrations and isotopes), or archived water samples are analyzed (mostly for stable water isotopes). The MEF is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. The SPRUCE experiment is a multi-year cooperative project among scientists of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory operated by UT-Battelle, LLC and the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station, with funding from the US Department of Energy, Biological and Environmental Research Program.
