Data for publication "Selected Simple Natural Antimicrobial Terpenoids as Additives to Control Biodegradation of Polyhydroxy Butyrate"

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <div>In this experimental research, different types of essential oils (EOs) were blended with polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) to study the influence of these additives on PHB degradation. The blends were developed by incorporating three terpenoids at two concentrations (1 and 3%). The mineralization rate obtained from CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;released from each sample was the factor that defined biodegradation. Furthermore, scanning electron microscope (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) were used in this research. The biodegradation percentages of PHB blended with 3% of eucalyptol, limonene, and thymol after 226 days were reached 66.4%, 73.3%, and 76.9%, respectively, while the rate for pure PHB was 100% after 198 days, and SEM images proved these results. Mechanical analysis of the samples showed that eucalyptol had the highest resistance level, even before the burial test. The other additives showed excellent mechanical properties although they had less mechanical strength than pure PHB after extrusion. The samples&rsquo; mechanical properties improved due to their crystallinity and decreased glass transition temperature (Tg). Green synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles using Cocos nucifera leaf extract: Characterization, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and photocatalytic activity

<p>Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have been successfully prepared using <em>Cocos nucifera</em> leaf extract and investigated with their antimicrobial, antioxidant, and photocatalytic activity. The structural, compositional, and morphological properties of the NPs were recorded and studied systematically to confirm the synthesis. The aqueous suspension of NPs showed a UV-Vis. absorption maxima of 370 nm indicating primarily its formation. The XRD analysis identified the NPs with hexagonal wurtzite structure with an average particle size of 16.6 nm. The FTIR analysis identified some biomolecules and functional groups in the leaf extract as responsible for the encapsulation and stabilization of ZnO NPs. The EDX analysis showed the desired elemental compositions in the material. A flower-shaped morphology of ZnO NPs was observed by SEM with a grain size of around 15 nm. The optical properties of the NPs were studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy and the bandgap was calculated as 3.37 eV. The Prepared ZnO NPs have demonstrated antimicrobial activity against <em>T. harzianum</em>, and <em>S. aureus</em> with a ZOI (zone of inhibition) of 14 and 10 mm, respectively. The photocatalytic behavior of ZnO NPs showed absorbance degradation at around 640 nm and discolored methylene blue dye after one hour with a degradation maximum of 84.29 %. Thus, the prepared ZnO NPs could be used potentially in antibiotic development, pharmaceutical industries, and as photocatalysts. </p>

<p><span>This is the dataset for the study of "Social dilemma in the excess use of antimicrobials incurring antimicrobial resistance". </span></p> <p><span>The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) caused by the excess use of antimicrobials has come to be recognized as a global threat to public health. There is a 'tragedy of the commons' type social dilemma behind this excessive use of antimicrobials, which should be recognized by all stakeholders. To address this global threat, we thus surveyed eight countries/areas to determine whether people recognize this dilemma and showed that although more than half of the population pays little, if any, attention to it, almost 20% recognize this social dilemma, and 15–30% of those have a positive attitude toward solving that dilemma. We suspect that increasing individual awareness of this social dilemma contributes to decreasing the frequency of AMR emergencies.</span></p>

Assessment of antimicrobial activity of melittin encapsulated in bicontinuous microemulsions prepared using renewable oils

<p>The objective of this study is to demonstrate that melittin, a well-studied antimicrobial peptide (AMP), can be solubilized in an active form in bicontinuous microemulsions (BMEs) that employ biocompatible oils. The systems investigated consisted of Winsor-III and -IV BME phases composed of Water/Aerosol-OT (AOT)/Polysorbate 85/isopropyl myristate and a Winsor-IV BME employing Polysorbate 80 and limonene. We found that melittin resided in an a-helix-rich configuration and was in an apolar environment for the AOT/Polysorbate 85 Winsor-III system, suggesting that melittin interacted with the surfactant monolayer and was in an active conformation. An apolar environment was also detected for melittin in the two Winsor-IV systems, but to a lesser extent than the Winsor-III system. Small-angle X-ray scattering analysis indicated that melittin at a concentration of 1.0 g/L<sub>aq</sub> in the aqueous subphase of the Winsor-IV systems led to the greatest impact on the BME structure (e.g., decrease of quasi-periodic repeat distance and correlation length and induction of interfacial fluidity). The antimicrobial activity of the Polysorbate 80 Winsor-IV system was evaluated against several bacteria prominent in chronic wounds and surgical site infections (SSIs). Melittin-free BMEs inhibited the growth of all tested bacteria due to its oil, limonene, while the inclusion of 1.0 g/L<sub>aq</sub> of melittin in the BMEs enhanced the activity against several bacteria. A further increase of melittin concentration in the BMEs had no effect. These results demonstrate the potential utility of BMEs as a delivery platform for AMPs and other hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs to inhibit antibiotic-resistant microorganisms in chronic wounds and SSIs.</p>

Hybrid AgNPs/eggshell calcium carbonate particles and their antimicrobial efficiency

<p>In this study, hybrid particles of AgNPs<span>-</span>loaded eggshell calcium carbonate <span>(</span>AgNPs<span>/</span>eCaCO<sub>3</sub><span>)</span> were prepared<em> in situ</em> by precipitating the eggshell in the presence of freshly prepared AgNPs with a particle size of 10<span>-</span>30 nm<span>. </span>The hybrid particles were comparatively precipitated<em> in situ</em> at 25 °C and 35 °C using poly <span>(</span>sodium 4<span>-</span>styrenesulphonate<span>) </span>as a polyelectrolyte<span>. </span>The AgNPs<span>/</span>eCaCO<sub>3</sub> particles prepared at 25 °C had a spherical morphology with a mean diameter of 3<span>.</span>56 mm, and BET surface area of 85.08 m<sup>2</sup>/g. On the other hand, the particles prepared at 35 °C had a broader size distribution with a mean diameter of 3<span>.</span>19 mm, and a BET surface area of 79.25 m<sup>2</sup>/g<span>.</span> AgNPs<span>-</span>loaded commercial calcium carbonate particles<span> (</span>AgNPs<span>/</span>e=CaCO<sub>3</sub><span>) </span>comparatively prepared at 35 °C were perfectly spherical with a mean diameter of 5<span>.</span>61 mm<span>. </span>At preparing temperature of 25 °C, the hybrid particles contain AgNPs of 0<span>.</span>78 wt<span>% </span>for AgNPs<span>/</span>eCaCO<sub>3</sub> and 3<span>.</span>20 wt<span>% </span>for AgNPs<span>/</span>CaCO<sub>3</sub><span>. </span>The AgNPs<span>/</span>eCaCO<sub>3</sub> and AgNPs<span>/</span>CaCO<sub>3</sub> particles exhibited the same efficiency against bacteria extracted from beef with an average inhibition zone diameter of 7–10 mm according to the modified Kirby<span>–</span>Bauer disc diffusion assay depending on their concentration and beef source<span>. </span>Freshly prepared silver colloids showed comparatively poorer antimicrobial efficiency with an inhibition zone diameter around 7 mm<span>. </span></p>
