<p>This collection of images was employed to examine the impact of various configurations in the 3D modeling process for short-distance environments. This analysis established settings to achieve submillimeter accuracy in the RMSE values of the analyzed points. </p> <p>Set of images used to evaluate the use of light aids (softboxes) and artificial textures in a short-distance environment. This set was used to evaluate the configurations and the possibility of using the SfM technique in the 3D modeling of structural tests. <p>As the planet becomes increasingly urbanized, it is imperative that we understand the ecological and evolutionary consequences of urbanization on species. One common attribute of urbanization that differs from rural areas is the prevalence of artificial light at night (ALAN). For many species, light is one of the most important and reliable environmental cues, largely governing the timing of daily and seasonal activity patterns. Recently, it has been shown that ALAN can alter behavioral, phenological, and physiological traits in diverse taxa. For temperate insects, diapause is an essential trait for winter survival and commences in response to declining daylight hours in the fall. Diapause is under strong selection pressure in the mosquito, <i>Aedes albopictus</i>; local adaptation and rapid evolution has been observed along a latitudinal cline. It is unknown how ALAN affects this photosensitive trait or if local adaptation has occurred along an urbanization gradient. Using a common garden experiment, we experimentally demonstrated that simulated ALAN reduces diapause incidence in this species by as much as 40%. There was no difference, however, between urban and rural demes. We also calculated diapause incidence from wild demes in urban areas to determine if wild populations exhibited lower than predicted incidence compared to estimates from total nocturnal darkness. In early fall, lower than predicted diapause incidence was recorded but all demes reached nearly 100% diapause before terminating egg laying. It is possible that nocturnal resting behavior in vegetation limits the amount of ALAN exposure this species experiences potentially limiting local adaptation.</p>
A Brillouin light scattering study of the spin-wave magnetic field dependence in a magnetic hybrid system made of an artificial spin-ice structure and a film underlayer
<p>We present a combined Brillouin light scattering (BLS) and micromagnetic simulation investigation of the magnetic-field-dependent<br> spin-wave spectra in a hybrid structure made of permalloy (NiFe) artificial spin-ice (ASI) systems, composed of stadium-shaped nanoislands, deposited on the top of an unpatterned permalloy film with a nonmagnetic spacer layer. The thermal spin-wave spectra were recorded by BLS as a function of the magnetic field applied along the symmetry direction of the ASI sample. Magneto-optic Kerr effect magnetometry was used to measure the hysteresis loops in the same orientation as the BLS measurements. The frequency and the intensity of several spin-wave modes detected by BLS were measured as a function of the applied magnetic field. Micromagnetic simulations enabled us to identify the modes in terms of their frequency and spatial symmetry and to extract information about the existence and strength of the dynamic coupling, relevant only to a few modes of a given hybrid system. Using this approach, we suggest a way to understand if the dynamic coupling between ASI and film modes is present or not, with interesting implications for the development of future three-dimensional magnonic applications and devices.</p>

Annual Summary of Artificial Light At Night from VIIRS/S-NPP at CONUS County and Census Tract V1 (ALAN_VIIRS_CONUS) at GES DISC
This product provides detailed information about the satellite-based data on artificial light at night (ALAN). The Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day/Night Band (DNB) nighttime lights (NTL) product (VNP46A4, DOI: 10.5067/VIIRS/VNP46A4.001 ) in NASA’s Black Marble suite is used to derive annual summary of ALAN levels throughout the CONUS at both county and tract level for the period of 2012-2020. The PI Dr. Qian Xiao is a member of NASA Heath and Air Quality Applied Sciences Team (HAQAST).
Data from: Nocturnal flight-calling behaviour predicts vulnerability to artificial light in migratory birds
Understanding interactions between biota and the built environment is increasingly important as human modification of the landscape expands in extent and intensity. For migratory birds, collisions with lighted structures are a major cause of mortality, but the mechanisms behind these collisions are poorly understood. Using 40 years of collision records of passerine birds, we investigated the importance of species' behavioral ecologies in predicting rates of building collisions during nocturnal migration through Chicago, IL and Cleveland, OH, USA. We found that use of nocturnal flight calls is an important predictor of collision risk in nocturnally migrating passerine birds. Species that produce flight calls during nocturnal migration collided with buildings more than expected given their local abundance, whereas those that do not use such communication collided much less frequently. Our results suggest that a stronger attraction response to artificial light at night in species that produce flight calls may mediate these differences in collision rates. Nocturnal flight calls likely evolved to facilitate collective decision-making during navigation, but this same social behavior may now exacerbate vulnerability to a widespread anthropogenic disturbance. Our results also suggest that social behavior during migration may reflect poorly-understood differences in navigational mechanisms across lineages of birds.
