Figure 2 - Faunal resemblance pattern (a) and geographic distibution (b) of stations where both asterozoans and holothurians were sampled during "Polarstern" cruises PS01, PS04, and PS06. a Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) plot showing the faunal between-station resemblance pattern. The numbers are station numbers, the affiliation of stations to asterozoan-holothurian assemblages, based on cluster analysis (complete linkage, threshold of 21% Bray-Curtis similarity), are indicated by color codes. According to cluster analysis, stn 213 belongs to cluster "Overdeepened Basins II" but based on MSD ordination it was assigned to cluster "Eastern Shelf" b Geographic map of stations. Symbol color denotes assemblage affiliation according to cluster analysis and Multidimensional Scaling (see Fig. 2a), symbol size is scaled according to the number of species at each station (ranging from 13 to 51).

Planets or asteroids? A geochemical method to constrain the masses of White Dwarf pollutants (video)

<p>The PLATO mission will discover a large number of terrestrial exoplanets, providing measurements of their radii. However, to determine whether an exoplanet is &lsquo;Earth-like&rsquo;, we must also understand its geological composition. The composition of a planet has wide ranging implications for its subsequent evolution and habitability. Ground-based follow-up to the PLATO detections can constrain planet masses and inform our knowledge of planetary interiors. In this talk, I will discuss a complimentary technique that can further improve our understanding of planetary composition and the geology of rocky exoplanets.</p> <p>Polluted white dwarfs which have accreted fragments of rocky objects provide a unique opportunity to probe exoplanetary interiors. These accreted fragments are often rich in either core-like or mantle-like material, which inform us about the core and mantle compositions we can expect to find in exoplanetary bodies.</p> <p>In this talk, I will present an approach to modelling the abundances of non-Earth-like core and mantle compositions observed in polluted white dwarfs. We use data from metal-silicate partitioning experiments to calculate the effect of non-Earth-like conditions on the distribution of elements between the core and the mantle. The resulting non-Earth-like compositions may be useful for interior structure models of exoplanets.</p>

Binary asteroid formation movies

<p>Simulations of binary asteroid formation using a polyhedral DEM N-body code.&nbsp;</p> <p>Each movie has been rendered in the inertial frame of the system and their titles correspond to the simulation identifier used in the printed article.</p> <p>Due to a bug in the code, some particle phase through the boundary of the primary body which can cause them to be ejected at high velocities as they get too close to the barycentre of the system. Comparing our results with a fixed version of the code where contacts between the primary body and disk particles are resolved, this does not change the dynamics of the disk evolution and the amount of ejected mass remains about the same for each simulation.</p>
