Implications of headwater contact zones for the riverine barrier hypothesis: a case study of the Blue-capped Manakin (Lepidothrix coronata)
<p>Rivers frequently delimit the geographic ranges of species in the Amazon Basin. These rivers also define the boundaries between genetic clusters within many species, yet river boundaries have been documented to break down in headwater regions where rivers are narrower. To explore the evolutionary implications of headwater contact zones in Amazonia, we examined genetic variation in the Blue-capped Manakin (<em>Lepidothrix coronata</em>), a species previously shown to contain several genetically and phenotypically distinct populations across the western Amazon Basin. We collected restriction site-associated DNA sequence data (RADcap) for 706 individuals and found that spatial patterns of genetic structure indicate rivers, particularly the Amazon and Ucayali, are major dispersal barriers for <em>L. coronata</em> along a distance of more than 3000 km. We also found evidence that genetic connectivity is elevated across several headwater regions, highlighting the importance of headwater gene flow for models of Amazonian diversification. The headwaters of the Ucayali River provide a notable exception to findings of headwater gene flow by harboring non-admixed populations of <em>L. coronata</em> on opposite sides of a <1 km-wide river channel with a known dynamic history, potentially suggesting that additional prezygotic barriers are limiting gene flow in this region. </p>

Vegetation surveys at CAP LTER ripirain-area bird-monitoring locations in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (2013)
Over the past half-century, the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (GPMA) has been one of the fastest growing regions in the US, experiencing rapid urban expansion in addition to urban intensification. This backdrop provides an ideal setting to monitor biodiversity changes in response to urbanization, and the CAP LTER has been using a standardized point-count protocol to monitor the bird population throughout the GPMA and surrounding Sonoran desert region since 2000. A subset of these bird-monitoring sites are located in riparian areas, and additional riparian-area monitoring locations centered on the Salt River as it runs through the GPMA were added in 2013 and 2014. In May and June of 2013, the CAP LTER surveyed the vegetation in 6,400 square meter plots around all of these riparian-area sites as part of an analysis of change in bird abundance and community composition. This dataset catalogs the results of vegetation surveys at nineteen bird-monitoring sites in riparian areas of the GPMA.

Mother Cap - format 2
Mother Cap is a sandstone tor of cross-bedded Chatsworth Grit (Namurian) in the Peak District National Park. It stands about 8 m high and can be access from the nearby car park. Note the pot holes on tops which may / may not be natural features. MSC Creamery Milk Bottle Cap
Given to CAP by a professor from the Agricultural program at MSU, this milk bottle cap originally would have been on top of an MSC Creamery milk bottle. Using the dairy cows on campus, the College bottled and sold MSC-brand milk. Today, most people are familiar with the dairy culture on campus through MSU-made ice cream at one of the locations of the Dairy Store on campus. MSU has changed its name a number of times throughout its history, allowing us to date objects and artifacts with the institution's name on it. In this case, 'MSC' stands for Michigan State College which was the official name from 1925-1955. Because of this, we know that the bottle cap dates within these three decades. CAP has also found MSC Creamery bottles during investigations, which indicates that the dairy culture on campus has been an tenet of the institution's identity. Photogrammetry model made by Jack A.
