Green algae, cyanobacteria and diatom concentrations from the GCE-LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) Project

SALTEx (Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment) is a field experiment designed to simulate saltwater intrusion in a tidal freshwater wetland to predict how chronic (Press) and acute (Pulse) salinization will affect this and other tidal freshwater ecosystems. The SALTEx experiment was initiated in 2012 and consists of 31 field plots , each 2.5 m on a side. There are three treatments (Press, Pulse, and Fresh) and two types of controls (with and without sides), each consisting of six replicates. The Press treatment plots receive regular (4 times each week) additions of a mixture of seawater and fresh river water. Pulse plots receive the same mixture of seawater and river water during September and October, which is historically a time of low flow in the river when natural saltwater intrusion occurs. The Fresh treatment plots receive regular additions of fresh river water. Treatment water is added during low tide to facilitate its infiltration into the soil, and all plots are inundated by astronomical tides at high tide. We are measuring the abundance of benthic algae with a BenthoTorch as one of the response variables for the SALTEx project.

Ion concentrations in glacial meltwater streams, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1993-2023, ongoing)

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a systematic aqueous geochemical sampling program has been undertaken. A series of terrestrial water samples have been collected and analyzed for major ion chemistry by ion chromatography. The concentrations of ions cover a wide range of total dissolved solids from the stream waters. This dataset shows concentrations of lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, chlorine, bromine, silicon, fluorine, sulfate, and hydrogen ions found in various streams of the McMurdo Dry Valleys.

SBC LTER: Nutrient concentrations and algae cover in the Ventura River catchment, California, 2008

Relationships among catchment land use and concentrations of nutrients, algae, and dissolved oxygen in a southern California river. Freshwater Science, 2012, 31(3):908-927 doi: 10.1899/11-155.1 Data not reported here: Chlorophyll-a, physicochemical and land use parameters (e.g., land-use type, water depth, substratum size, % open canopy, and water velocity) were used in the paper's analysis and so were also collected, but are not reported here. Nutrient diffusing substrata (NDS) were deployed at 12 sites to assess the nutrient(s) limiting algal growth; these data are also not reported here. Macroalgal cover and stream nutrients are reported during spring and summer 2008 at 15 stream and estuarine sites in the Ventura River catchment in southern California, USA. Data were collected within a mosaic of undeveloped, agricultural, and urban areas to examine relationships among land use, nutrients, algae, and dissolved oxygen (see paper, linked below). This dataset reports major dissolved nutrients (phosphate, nitrate, ammonium) and total dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus, from May to September 2008, and percent cover of macroalgae (benthic and floating) at the same sites at the beginning and end of this period.

Brazilian Earth System Model: CMIP5 Sea ice concentration and Air Temperature data

<p>The Brazilian Earth System Model, Version 2.5 (BESM-OAV2.5) used here is a global climate coupled ocean-atmosphere-sea ice model, and is part of CMIP5 project. The atmospheric component of BESM-OAV2.5 is BAM (Brazilian Atmospheric Model) and was described in detail by Figueroa et al., (2016). BAM, developed at Center for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies of the National Institute for Space Research CPTEC-INPE has been constantly reformulated over the last years (Figueroa et al., 2016; Nobre et al., 2013). The lastest version, used here and described by Veiga et al., (2019), has spectral horizontal representation truncated at triangular wave number 62, grid resolution of approximately&nbsp;1.875∘&times;1.875∘, and&nbsp;28 sigma levels in the vertical, with unequal increments between the vertical levels (i.e., a T62L28).&nbsp;The oceanic component of BESM-OAV2.5 is the Modular Ocean Model, Version 4p1, from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (MOM4p1/NOAA-GFDL), described in detail by Griffies, (2009). The MOM4p1 includes a Sea Ice Simulator (SIS) built-in ice model (Winton 2000). The SIS has five ice thickness categories and three vertical layers (one snow and two ice). To calculate ice internal stresses are used the elastic-viscous-plastic technique described by Hunke and Dukowicz, (1997). The thermodynamics is given by a modified Semtner&rsquo;s three-layer scheme (Semtner, 1976). SIS is able to calculate sea ice concentration, snow cover, thickness, brine content and temperature. Furthermore, SIS calculates ice-ocean fluxes and transmits fluxes between atmosphere and ocean. &nbsp;The horizontal grid resolution of MOM4p1 in the longitudinal direction is a set to 1˚. The latitudinal direction varies uniformly, in both hemispheres, from&nbsp;1∕4<sup>o </sup>between 10<sup>o</sup>&thinsp;S and 10<sup>o </sup>N to 1<sup>o </sup>of resolution at 45<sup>o</sup>&nbsp;and to 2<sup>o</sup>&nbsp;of resolution at 90<sup>o</sup>. The vertical axis has 50 levels (upper 220m, has 10 m resolution, increasing to about 360 at deeper levels. The MOM4p1 and BAM models were coupled using FMS coupler.&nbsp; FMS coupled was developed by NOAA-GFDL. The BAM model receives SST and ocean albedo from MOM4p1 and SIS (hour by hour). The MOM4p1 receives momentum fluxes, specific humidity, pressure, heat fluxes, vertical diffusion of velocity components and freshwater.&nbsp;</p> <p>This study used two numerical experiments from CMIP5: (i) piControl: it runs for 700 years, forced by invariant pre-industrial atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> concentration level&nbsp; (280ppmv) and (ii) Abrupt 4xCO<sub>2</sub>: it runs for 460 years, comprising an abrupt instantaneous quadrupling of atmospheric CO<sub>2 </sub>level concentration from the piControl simulation. The design of both experiments follows the CMIP5 protocol (Taylor et al., 2012).</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Carbonyl Sulfide (OCS/COS) and Carbon Disulfide (CS2): global modelled marine surface concentrations and emissions, 2000-2019

<p>This dataset contains a global ocean emission inventory of the sulfur-containing trace gases carbonyl sulfide (OCS/COS) and carbon disulfide (CS2). It covers the period 2000-2019, and includes a monthly average and an average diel cycle for each month for sea surface concentrations and emissions to the atmosphere. The spatial resolution is&nbsp; 2.8&deg; x 2.8&deg; at the equator (T42 grid), the depth extends from the surface to the mixed layer depth.</p> <p>Carbonyl sulfide (OCS) is the most abundant, long-lived sulphur gas in the atmosphere and a major supplier of sulfur to the stratospheric sulfate aerosol layer. The short-lived gas carbon disulfide (CS<sub>2</sub>) is oxidized to OCS and constitutes a major indirect source to the atmospheric budget of OCS. We encourage the use of the data provided here as input for atmospheric modelling studies to further assess the atmospheric OCS budget and the role of OCS in climate.</p>
