Data from: Muscle–spring dynamics in time-limited, elastic movements

Muscle contractions that load in-series springs with slow speed over a long duration do maximal work and store the most elastic energy. However, time constraints, such as those experienced during escape and predation behaviours, may prevent animals from achieving maximal force capacity from their muscles during spring-loading. Here, we ask whether animals that have limited time for elastic energy storage operate with springs that are tuned to submaximal force production. To answer this question, we used a dynamic model of a muscle–spring system undergoing a fixed-end contraction, with parameters from a time-limited spring-loader (bullfrog: Lithobates catesbeiana) and a non-time-limited spring-loader (grasshopper: Schistocerca gregaria). We found that when muscles have less time to contract, stored elastic energy is maximized with lower spring stiffness (quantified as spring constant). The spring stiffness measured in bullfrog tendons permitted less elastic energy storage than was predicted by a modelled, maximal muscle contraction. However, when muscle contractions were modelled using biologically relevant loading times for bullfrog jumps (50 ms), tendon stiffness actually maximized elastic energy storage. In contrast, grasshoppers, which are not time limited, exhibited spring stiffness that maximized elastic energy storage when modelled with a maximal muscle contraction. These findings demonstrate the significance of evolutionary variation in tendon and apodeme properties to realistic jumping contexts as well as the importance of considering the effect of muscle dynamics and behavioural constraints on energy storage in muscle–spring systems.

Reproducibility Package for "ExpectAll: A BDD Based Approach for Link Failure Resilience in Elastic Optical Networks"

<p>This is a reproducibility package for the VMCAI'25 paper "ExpectAll: A BDD Based Approach for Link Failure Resilience in Elastic Optical Networks".</p> <p>Constantly growing demands on higher bandwidth and quality of service in modern communication networks motivate the introduction of fully optical network technologies that can eliminate the bottlenecks of optical to digital signal conversions. Recent advances in elastic optical networks enable fine-grained resource allocation technologies for traffic demands, which introduces the Routing and Spectrum Allocation (RSA) problem. In order to improve network resilience for multiple link failures while avoiding double light-spectrum allocation, we present Ex- pectAll---a novel approach and a tool for resilience and path/spectrum allocation based on binary decision diagrams (BDDs). Our method efficiently computes and stores all solutions to the RSA problem in the BDD data structure, facilitating optimal and fast failover protection for failure scenarios even with multiple failing links. ExpectAll surpasses the state- of-the-art methods in both the speed of finding a single optimal solution for a currently occurring failure scenario as well as in the preparation time required to precompute all optimal route and spectrum assignments.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Elastic Data Analytics for the Cloud-to-Things Continuum - Demo Video

<p>The massive deployment of Internet-connected devices has led to an increase in the collection of data that are then used by companies to improve their decision-making processes. This growing trend demands more and more cloud and communications infrastructure. The limited resources, the need of sharing them, and the fact that many consumers are interested in the same data call for an efficient management of the available resources. The cloud-to-thing continuum can be used to execute different analytics closer to the data source so infrastructure consumption and data circulation can be optimized. In this paper, different dimensions for achieving elastic analytics and a framework for dynamically modifying their behavior, is proposed.</p> <p>This artifact corresponds with a descriptive video of the framework presented in the paper.&nbsp;</p>

Elasticity and damping ratio measurement of droplets on super-hydrophobic surfaces

<p>The elasticity of the droplet refers to the ability of the droplet in restoring to its original shape and ensuring its strong robustness. The measurement of the droplets' elasticity is vitally important in understanding the characteristics and mechanism of the droplet jumping, spreading, and coalescence. In this paper, we measured the elasticity and damping ratio of droplets with different viscosity. A plate coated with a hydrophobic layer pressed on a droplet, and the elastic force was recorded by an electronic balance. Meanwhile, a mathematical model was constructed to illustrate the change rate of the droplet area with the elastic force. By comparing the influence of volume and viscosity on elasticity, the results showed that work done by pressure converts into surface energy. And the elasticity of the droplet is provided by the surface tension and the damping ratio increases from 0.068 to 0.261.</p>
