Periphyton data collected from Northeast Shark Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER) from September 2006 to September 2008

Periphyton assessments were conducted and recorded for each throw. Periphyton volumes, cover, type and composition were recorded, along with some general observations of the area. Periphyton samples were brought back for processing, and archived for soft algae, diatom, chlorophyll a, biomass and nutrient analysis.

Periphyton Accumulation Rates from Shark River Slough, Taylor Slough and Florida Bay, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), South Florida, USA, January 2001 - ongoing

Periphyton accumulation rates were measured quarterly at FCE LTER sites in SRS and TS/Ph marshes (SRS 1-3, TS/Ph 1-3) and the seagrass meadows of Florida Bay (TS/Ph 9-11). Glass slides were used as artificial substrates for periphyton growth. Twenty slides were incubated for 2 months in triplicate periphytometers (flow-through plastic boxes) at the surface (marsh sites) and bottom (seagrass sites) at each site. In addition, at seagrass sites, twelve artificial seagrass blades were incubated for two months in triplicate at each site. Blades were made from strips of transparency film anchored to the bottom and floating upward toward the surface by use of a styrofoam bead on the top of the blade. Data are presented in terms of grams dry and ash-free dry mass accumulated per area per time, as well as the chlorophyll a content of the dry mass and its rate of accumulation. Total phosphorus content of accumulated periphyton is also provided. This is part of continuous data collection to test the hypothesis that phosphorus availability and hydroperiod influence periphyton production in the Everglades.

Periphyton Biomass Accumulation from the Shark River and Taylor Sloughs, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), South Florida, USA, January 2003 - ongoing

Periphyton biomass was measured quarterly at three replicate locations (1, 2, and 3) at FCE LTER marsh sites (SRS 1-3; TS/Ph 1-3). A 1-m2 plot was placed in the marsh and percent cover of periphyton was visually estimated, including cover on the water surface (floating), plant stems (epiphytic), and on the bottom (benthic). Periphyton was then harvested from the quadrats into a 2000 ml perforated graduated cylinder and the volume measured. A 120-ml subsample was removed and taken back to the laboratory for analysis. Data provided include percent cover by substrate, dry, ash, and ash-free dry mass per area, chlorophyll a per gram ash-free dry mass and per area, and the total phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon concentration on a dry weight basis. This is part of a continuous data collection to test the hypothesis that phosphorus and hydrology interact to influence periphyton abundance in Everglades marshes.

Macroalgae Production in Florida Bay (FCE LTER), South Florida, USA, May 2007 - April 2023

Benthic primary production in Florida Bay is mainly driven by mangroves, seagrass, peryphiton, and macroalgae. The nutrient dynamics and salinity regimes at Florida Bay are strongly influenced by marine waters from the Gulf of Mexico, oceanic waters from the Atlantic Ocean and fresh waters from the Everglades creating a complex estuary with oligohaline ecotones. Marine and groundwater are sources of P and are expected to decline with increased freshwater inflow (Childers et al. 2006a; Price et al. 2006). The Taylor Slough ecotone, (TS/Ph), which flows into the Bay, is characterized by small tidal influence and clear seasonal variability in water source and quality (Davis et al. 2003; Sutula et al. 2001), receives P from shallow groundwater inputs (Price et al. 2006).Therefore the amount of freshwater inputs from the Everglades will affect salinity, water residence times, and the sources, availability, and flux of organic and inorganic nutrients on Florida Bay. As a consequence gradients of N and P concentrations are characteristic in the Bay with expected low concentration of P and high N on the fresh water end, contrasting with higher levels of P and lower of N towards the marine section of the Bay. This gradient in P concentrations is expected to reflect in differences in both primary production and biomass along the TS/Ph ecotone. One of the Everglades LTER scientist general hypothesis is "that increasing inputs of freshwater will enhance oligotrophy in nutrient-poor coastal systems, as long as the inflowing water has low nutrient content; this dynamic will be most pronounced in the oligohaline ecotone" (LTER program). In this context we expect to have a differential production of calcareous macroalgae along the TS-Ph transect which reflect the P gradient with low productivity towards the fresh water influenced sites close to the Everglades increasing towards the marine section of the Bay. Mangrove Forest Growth from the Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE), South Florida, USA, January 1995 - ongoing

All mangrove trees having a diameter at breast height (DBH) greater than 2.5 cm were tagged in two 20 x 20 m plot in stations SRS4-7 and TS/Ph-8. Measurements in Plot Num1 began in 1995; measurements in Plot Num 2 began in 2001. Plot Num1 in TS/Ph-8 was established in 2001. Measurements at SRS-7 began in 2022. DBH has been measured in the period 1995-2023. Mangrove species include Rhizophora mangle, Laguncularia racemosa, Avicennia germinans, Conocarpus erectus.

Flux measurements from the SRS-6 Tower, Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), South Florida from October 2006 to 2014

Non-continous meteorological data from Butternut Key Weather Tower, Florida Bay, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), April 2001 through August 2013

The following abstract is from Price, R.M., Nuttle, W.K., Cosby, B.J., and Swart, P.K. 2007. Variation and Uncertainty in Evaporation from a Subtropical Estuary: Florida Bay, Estuaries and Coasts. 30(3): 497-506: Variation and uncertainty in estimated evaporation was determined over time and between two locations in Florida Bay, a subtropical estuary. Meteorological data were collected from September 2001 to August 2002 at Rabbit Key and Butternut Key within the Bay. Evaporation was estimated using both vapor flux and energy budget methods. The results were placed into a long-term context using 33 years of temperature and rainfall data collected in south Florida. Evaporation also was estimated from this long-term data using an empirical formula relating evaporation to clear sky solar radiation and air temperature. Evaporation estimates for the 12-mo period ranged from 144 to 175 cm yr21, depending on location and method, with an average of 163 cm yr21 (6 9%). Monthly values ranged from 9.2 to 18.5 cm, with the highest value observed in May, corresponding with the maximum in measured net radiation. Uncertainty estimates derived from measurement errors in the data were as much as 10%, and were large enough to obscure differences in evaporation between the two sites. Differences among all estimates for any month indicate the overall uncertainty in monthly evaporation, and ranged from 9% to 26%. Over a 33-yr period (1970 to 2002), estimated annual evaporation from Florida Bay ranged from 148 to 181 cm yr21, with an average of 166 cm yr21. Rainfall was consistently lower in Florida Bay than evaporation, with a long-term average of 106 cm yr21. Rainfall considered alone was uncorrelated with evaporation at both monthly and annual time scales; when the seasonal variation in clear sky radiation was also taken into account both net radiation and evaporation were significantly suppressed in months with high rainfall.

Large shark catches (Drumline), water temperatures, salinities, dissolved oxygen levels, and stable isotope values in the Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER) from May 2009 to May 2011

This dataset provides information on the catches of large sharks in the Shark River Slough in relation to physical factors including dissolved oxygen, water temperature, salinity, and distance upstream. Analysis of data collected suggest that distance from the Gulf of Mexico and salinity have the largest effects on shark catch rates, with most large sharks being caught at the mouth of the estuary in high salinity waters. This dataset includes all sharks caught on drumline gear, including large coastal species such as bull sharks and lemon sharks, as well as smaller coastal species such as Atlantic sharpnose sharks and blacknose sharks.

FCE Redlands Flood Zones, Miami-Dade County, South Florida

Urban growth models have increasingly been used by planners and policy makers to visualize, organize, understand, and predict urban growth. However, these models reveal a wide disparity in their attention to policy factors. Some urban growth models capture few if any specific policy effects (e.g.,as model variables), while others integrate certain policies but not others. Since zoning policies are the most widely used form of land use control in the United States, their conspicuous absence from so many urban growth models is surprising. This research investigated the impacts of zoning on urban growth by calibrating and simulating a cellular automaton urban growth model, SLEUTH, under two conditions in a South Florida location. The first condition integrated restrictive agricultural zoning into SLEUTH, while the other ignored zoning data. Goodness of fit metrics indicate that including the agricultural zoning data improved model performance. The results further suggest that agricultural zoning has been somewhat successful in retarding urban growth in South Florida. Ignoring zoning information is detrimental to SLEUTH performance in particular, and urban growth modeling in general.
