<p>Dataset supporting publication: “Data collected by coupling fix and wearable sensors for addressing urban microclimate variability in an historical Italian city” (publication available for download: <a href="https://zenodo.org/record/3901556">GEOFIT Zenodo</a>)</p> <p>Datasets resulting from monitoring activities of Sant'Apollinare systems and climatic parameters inside and outside the building (post-intervention monitoring).</p> <p>The article presents the data collected through an extensive research work conducted in a historic hilly town in central Italy during the period 2016-2017. Data concern two different datasets: long-term hygrothermal histories collected in two specific positions of the town object of the research, and three environmental transects collected following on foot the same designed path at three different time of the same day, i.e. during a heat wave event in summer. The short-term monitoring campaign is carried out by means of an innovative wearable weather station specifically developed by the authors and settled upon a bike helmet. Data provided within the short-term monitoring campaign are analysed by computing the apparent temperature, a direct indicator of human thermal comfort in the outdoors. All provided environmental data are geo-referenced. These data are used in order to examine the intra-urban microclimate variability. Outcomes from both long- and short-term monitoring campaigns allow to confirm the existing correlation between the urban forms and functionalities and the corresponding local microclimate conditions, also generated by anthropogenic actions. In detail, higher fractions of built surfaces are associated to generally higher temperatures as emerges by comparing the two long-term air temperature data series, i.e. temperature collected at point 1 is higher than temperature collated at point 2 for the 75% of the monitored period with an average of þ2.8 [1]C. Furthermore, gathered environmental transects demonstrate the high variability of the main environmental parameters below the Urban Canopy. Diversification of the urban thermal behaviour leads to a computed apparent temperature range in between 33.2 [1]C and 46.7 [1]C at 2 p.m. along the monitoring path. Reuse of these data may be helpful for further investigating interesting correlations among urban configuration, anthropogenic actions and microclimate variables affecting outdoor comfort. Additionally, the proposed dataset may be compared to other similar datasets collected in other urban contexts around the world. Finally, it can be compared to other monitoring methodologies such as weather stations and satellite measurements available in the location at the same time.</p>

<p>This is the replication package of the article</p> <p>The Relationship Between Different Python Argument-Passing Mechanisms and Fixes: An Empirical Study</p> <p> </p> <p>Abstract:</p> <p>Modern programming languages (such as Python, but not only) have introduced a variety of constructs and syntactical elements to make software development more efficient and concise. Examples include lambda functions, comprehension collections, of mechanisms to facilitate the passing of arguments to a function. While many of such constructs may, in principle, be beneficial for developers, recent studies have shown that certain programming constructs introduce atoms of confusion, and may therefore affect program understanding. Moreover, recent work has shown that changes to some constructs, namely functional constructs of Python, induce more fixes than other changes. This paper studies the effect of different Python argument-passing mechanisms to investigate their relationship with code proneness to be fixed. Specifically, we study the fix-proneness for what concerns the function definition, as well as its invocation. This is done by analyzing the evolutionary history of 200 Python projects, for a total of about 3M functions and 12M call sites. While there are varying effects for what concerns parameter declaration mechanisms, we found evidence that keyword-based argument passing is less defect prone than positional argument passing, and this is not affected by size-related confounding factors.</p>
CEDS Version 2021-04-21 Aircraft Emissions Fix
<p>This data release contains global CEDS aircraft emissions gridded over a 0.5° latitude x longitude grid, with 25 altitude levels of 0.61 km thickness. The center of these altitude levels range from 0.305 to 14.495 km above sea level. Grids are provided over the years 1950-2019 on a monthly time scale, with the exception of methane, which ranges from 1970-2019. </p>
Fixed allele differences associated with the centromere reveal chromosome morphology and rearrangements in a reptile (Varanus acanthurus Boulenger)
<p>Chromosome rearrangements are often implicated with genomic divergence and are proposed to be associated with species evolution. Rearrangements alter the genomic structure and interfere with homologous recombination by isolating a portion of the genome. Integration of multi-platform next generation DNA sequencing technologies has enabled putative identification of chromosome rearrangements in many taxa, however, integrating these data sets with cytogenetics is still uncommon beyond model genetic organisms. Therefore, to achieve the ultimate goal for the genomic classification of eukaryotic organisms, physical chromosome mapping remains critical. The ridge-tailed goannas (<em>Varanus</em> <em>acanthurus</em> BOULENGER) are a group of dwarf monitor lizards comprised of several species found throughout Northern Australia. These lizards exhibit extreme divergence at both the genic and chromosomal levels. The chromosome polymorphisms are widespread extending across much of their distribution, raising the question if these polymorphisms are homologous within the <em>V. acanthurus</em> complex. We used a combined genomic and cytogenetic approach to test for homology across divergent populations with morphologically similar chromosome rearrangements. We showed that more than one chromosome pair was involved with the widespread rearrangements. This finding provides evidence to support <em>de novo</em> chromosome rearrangements have occurred within populations. These chromosome rearrangements are characterised by fixed allele differences originating in the vicinity of the centromeric region. We then compared this region with several other assembled genomes of reptiles, chicken and the platypus. We demonstrated that the synteny of genes in chordates remains conserved despite centromere repositioning across these taxa.</p>

Effects of long-term fixed fire regimes on African savanna vegetation biomass, vertical structure and tree stem density
<ol> <li><span>Fire plays an integral role in shaping the vegetation structure of savanna ecosystems. However, effects of fire regime characteristics, such as frequency and season of burn, on savanna vegetation structure, biomass and tree abundance across landscape types are largely unknown. </span></li> <li><span>We used high-resolution airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) to investigate the long-term effects of fire manipulation on savanna vegetation in Kruger National Park, South Africa. We analysed the effects of fire exclusion and experimental burns every 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 years and during different seasons on aboveground biomass (AGB), tree stem densities and vegetation vertical height profiles across a rainfall gradient and on contrasting geologies. </span></li> <li><span>Across savanna types, and especially in drier savannas, fire season was more influential for constraining AGB than was fire frequency. Plots experiencing fires during the late- and mid-dry season had 44.50% and 43.60%, respectively, lower AGB relative to unburnt plots than wet-season fires. However, in mesic savannas, fire frequency interacted with fire season to influence AGB: plots subjected to high frequency, dry season fires had 55.35% lower AGB than unburnt plots, whereas plots burnt in the wet season at lower frequencies had lower AGB (24.40% lower than unburnt plots) than plots subjected to high frequency, wet-season fires (13.74% lower AGB than unburnt plots). </span></li> <li><span>Fire regimes had variable effects on tree densities, and effects varied with savanna type. Woody vertical vegetation profiles showed the largest differences in response to dry season fires, with the greatest divergence in vegetation height classes < 5m. </span></li> <li><span><em>Synthesis and applications</em>. Understanding the influence of fire regimes on vegetation structure has important implications for the management of savanna heterogeneity, and for predicting trajectories of change in savanna vegetation as fire regimes vary with climate change. We show that the magnitude of the effect of fire on woody vegetation structure varies with savanna context. Our results suggest that heterogeneous vegetation structure can be achieved by applying fires in the dry season in mesic savannas, whereas in dry savannas, variation in fire regimes is less consequential for constraining biomass accumulation and altering vegetation structure. </span></li> </ol>
[Tool demo] Prospector: a Tool to Find Fixes to Known Vulnerabilities of Open-Source Projects

Finding them is time-consuming and error-prone as it involves the analysis of multiple, unstructured resources. </p> <p>In this paper we present \prospector, a tool that supports mapping<br> vulnerability advisories from vulnerability databases onto the corresponding fix in the source code. \prospector employs a set of heuristics that mimics and automates the<br> strategies that would be employed by human security experts.</p> <p>Given an advisory expressed in natural language, \prospector processes the commits found in the target source code repository, ranks them based on a set of predefined rules, and produces a report that the user can inspect to<br> determine which commits to retain as the actual fix.<br> The tool is publicly available and is released under the Apache 2.0 license.</p>
Observed ocean surface albedo from a fixed offshore platform
<p>The ocean surface albedo (OSA) is an important parameter in numerical ocean models and air‒sea heat flux calculations. Radiation observations were conducted to study the OSA in the northern South China Sea using a fixed offshore tower-based platform. The platform was located at 21.44° N, 111.39° E, with an average water depth of approximately 16 m. It consisted of a main tower and two auxiliary towers. The auxiliary towers were approximately 6 m from the main tower and their lower edges were approximately 6 m from the mean sea surface.</p> <p>A four-component net radiometer (CNR4) was installed on the lower edge of the southeast auxiliary tower through a 2-m long boom to simultaneously measure the upward and downward broadband solar radiation having spectral bands between 305 and 2800 nm. A bottom-mounted Nortek acoustic Doppler current profiler was used to measure surface waves. Other ancillary meteorological instruments were used to measure meteorological parameters, including wind speed and water vapor pressure.</p> <p>The observation period lasted from September 2017 to December 2018. The measured broadband radiation was collected in 30-min segments. To obtain an accurate and reliable radiation dataset, three specific types of data were removed from the dataset: (1) local afternoon data; (2) data with solar altitude angles < 10°; (3) data with downward solar radiation of < 30 W m<sup>−2</sup>. After this quality control, 2433 segments of data can be used to study the OSA.</p>
Organismal effects of heat in a fixed ecological niche: Implications on the role of behavioral buffering in our changing world
<p>Increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves generate new challenges for many organisms. Our understanding of the ecological predictors of thermal vulnerability is improving, yet, at least in endotherms, we are still only beginning to understand one critical component of predicting resilience: exactly how do wild animals cope with sub-lethal heat? In wild endotherms, most prior work focuses on one or a few traits, leaving uncertainty about organismal consequences of heatwaves. Here, we experimentally generated a 2.8<span><span><span> </span></span></span><span>°</span>C heatwave for free-living nestling tree swallows (<em><span>Tachycineta bicolor</span></em>). Over a week-long period coinciding with the peak of post-natal growth, we quantified a suite of traits to test the hypotheses that (a) behavioral or (b) physiological responses may be sufficient for coping with inescapable heat. Heat-exposed nestlings increased panting and decreased huddling, but treatment effects on panting dissipated over time, even though heat-induced temperatures remained elevated. Physiologically, we found no effects of heat on: gene expression of three heat shock proteins in blood, muscle, and three brain regions; secretion of circulating corticosterone at baseline or in response to handling; and telomere length. Moreover, heat had a positive effect on growth and a marginal, but not significant, positive effect on subsequent recruitment. These results suggest that nestlings were generally buffered from deleterious effects of heat, with one exception: heat-exposed nestlings exhibited lower gene expression for superoxide dismutase, a key antioxidant defense. Despite this one apparent cost, our thorough organismal investigation indicates general resilience to a heatwave that may, in part, stem from behavioral buffering and acclimation. Our approach provides a mechanistic framework that we hope will improve understanding of species persistence in the face of climate change.</p>
Non-contact measurement of a free flying bumblebee's (Bombus terrestris) electrical potential as it approaches and leaves a fixed electrode
<p>With increasing evidence of electroreception in terrestrial arthropods, understanding receptor level processes is vital to appreciating the capabilities and limits of this sense. Here, we examine the spatio-temporal sensitivity of mechanoreceptive filiform hairs in detecting electrical fields. We first present empirical data, highlighting the time-varying characteristics of biological electrical signals. We then explore how electrically sensitive hairs may respond to such stimuli.</p> <p>The main findings are: 1) oscillatory signals (elicited by wingbeats) influence the spatial sensitivity of hairs, unveiling an inextricable spatio-temporal link; 2) wingbeat direction modulates spatial sensitivity; 3) electrical wingbeats can be approximated by sinusoidally modulated DC signals; and 4) for a moving point charge, maximum sensitivity occurs at a faster timescale than a hair's frequency-based tuning. </p> <p>Our results show that electro-mechanical sensory hairs may capture different spatio-temporal information, depending on an object's movement and wingbeat and in comparison, to aero-acoustic stimuli. Crucially, we suggest that electrostatic and aero-acoustic signals may provide distinguishable channels of information for arthropods.</p> <p>Given the pervasiveness of electric fields in nature, our results suggest further study to understand electrostatics in the ecology of arthropods and to reveal unknown ecological relationships and novel interactions between species.</p>
Data from: Do chromosome rearrangements fix by genetic drift or natural selection? Insights from Brenthis butterflies
<p>Large-scale chromosome rearrangements, such as fissions and fusions, are a common feature of eukaryote evolution. They can have considerable influence on the evolution of populations, yet it remains unclear exactly how rearrangements become established and eventually fix. Rearrangements could fix by genetic drift if they are weakly deleterious or neutral, or they may instead be favoured by positive natural selection. Here we compare genome assemblies of three closely related <em>Brenthis</em> butterfly species and characterise a complex history of fission and fusion rearrangements. An inferred demographic history of these species suggests that rearrangements became fixed in populations with large long-term effective size (<em>N<sub>e</sub></em>). However, we also find large runs of homozygosity within individual genomes and show that a model of population structure with smaller local <em>N<sub>e</sub></em> can reconcile these observations. Using a recently developed analytic framework for characterising hard selective sweeps, we find that chromosome fusions are not enriched for evidence of past sweeps compared to other regions of the genome. Nonetheless, one chromosome fusion in the <em>B. daphne</em> genome is associated with a valley of diversity where genealogical branch lengths are distorted, consistent with a selective sweep. Our results suggest that drift is a stronger force in these populations than suggested by overall genetic diversity, but that the fixation of strongly underdominant rearrangements remains unlikely. Additionally, although chromosome fusions do not typically exhibit signatures of selective sweeps, a single example raises the possibility that natural selection may sometimes play a role in their fixation.</p>
