Multiple Element Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE): Soil Profile Rock Characteristics by Bedrock Type in Bartlett and Hubbard Brook, 2004-2018

Soils in our northeastern forests were formed in parent materials deposited by glaciers. The direction and distance of glacial movement can be used to predict the source of glacial till at “downstream” points on the landscape (Bailey 1992). The goal of this project was to identify the rocks excavated from the soil pits in each of the plots and then to use that data to validate the glacial till model. The minority of rocks in the soil pits matched the bedrock, showing the importance of glacial movement. Forest Inventory of a Northern Hardwood Forest: Bird Area, 1991 - present, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest

The forest inventory surveys in the bird area were initiated in 1981 and transects were made permanent in 1991 by Tom Siccama who created and designed this tree survey. The inventory is representative of approximately 2.5 km2 of mid elevation northern hardwood forest. The data set is particularly geared toward producing accurate mortality and recruitment estimates. It consists of a total inventory of all trees greater than or equal to 10 cm dbh within each of four 10 m wide belt transects. The parallel transects are placed approximately 200 m apart and 290° bearing in an east-west direction for 2200 to 2900 m. In 1991, each live stem greater than or equal to 10 cm dbh was tagged with a unique number. Tree vigor is assessed every two years and diameter is remeasured every ten years. Every two years, new tags are placed on stems that have grown into the 10 cm diameter class. This dataset includes 1991 and subsequent samplings. These detailed tree status data provide a high resolution assessment of tree vital rates, particularly recruitment and mortality rates. The data show an increase in both mortality and recruitment over the 30 year measure time (1991-2021). The number of unhealthy trees has also increased to about 8% of the live trees. The measure period includes notable disturbances, particularly the 2013 microburst impacted the west end of lines 5 and 9, and a saddled prominent outbreak concurrent with drought conditions in 2020. Long-term measurements of microbial biomass and activity at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest 1994 – ongoing

Long-term monitoring of soil nitrate (NO3-) and ammonium (NH4+) concentrations, microbial biomass carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content, microbial respiration, potential nitrification and N mineralization rates, pH, and denitrification potential has been ongoing at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest since 1994. Samples have been collected in the Bear Brook Watershed (west of Watershed 6) beginning in 1994. In 1998, our sampling regime was extended to Watershed 1 in an effort to monitor and quantify microbial response to a whole-watershed calcium addition. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Measurements were conducted on the Main bird plot in the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest and on three additional plots within the White Mountain National Forest from 1986-1997. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). This coverage was obtained in digital form from Chris Barton of the USGS. Bedrock geology in the Hubbard Brook Valley was mapped by C.C. Barton, R.H. Comerlo, and S.W. Bailey, August 1994 to August 1995. Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Soil Freezing Study (SFS) In Situ Measurements of Snow and Soil Frost Depth

Climate models for the northeastern United States (U.S.) over the next century predict an increase in air temperature between 2.8 and 4.3 °C and a decrease in the average number of days per year when a snowpack will cover the forest floor (Hayhoe et al. 2007, 2008; Campbell et al. 2010). Studies of forest dynamics in seasonally snow-covered ecosystems have been primarily conducted during the growing season, when most biological activity occurs. However, in recent years considerable progress has been made in our understanding of how winter climate change influences dynamics in these forests. The snowpack insulates soil from below-freezing air temperatures, which facilitates a significant amount of microbial activity. However, a smaller snowpack and increased depth and duration of soil frost amplify losses of dissolved organic C and NO3- in leachate, as well as N2O released into the atmosphere. The increase in nutrient loss following increased soil frost cannot be explained by changes in microbial activity alone. More likely, it is caused by a decrease in plant nutrient uptake following increases in soil frost. We conducted a snow-removal experiment at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest to determine the effects of a smaller winter snowpack and greater depth and duration of soil frost on trees, soil microbes, and arthropods. A number of publications have been based on these data: Comerford et al. 2013, Reinmann et al. 2019, Templer 2012, and Templer et al. 2012. The valley-wide plots are a grid of 431 sites along fifteen N–S transects established at 500-m intervals spanning the entire Hubbard Brook Valley. This dataset includes total soil carbon, nitrogen and organic matter content, potential net nitrogen mineralization and nitrification rates, microbial respiration rates, soil water content and holding capacity, soil ammonium and nitrate concentrations, soil pH, and tree composition in a subset of 100 randomly selected plots in 2000.
