An updated generic classification of Cenozoic pleurotomariid gastropods, with new records from the Oligocene and Early Miocene of India
<p>Although taxonomically distinct, the Cenozoic pleurotomariids are the bottlenecked remnants of the Mesozoic members of the family in terms of morphology, with only conical forms surviving the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. Here, we propose an updated classification scheme for the Cenozoic representatives of this group, based on data from the entire Cenozoic pleurotomariid fossil record. We consider all conventional as well as several new characters so that this scheme can readily help to distinguish Cenozoic pleurotomariid genera. Following the new classification scheme, a revision of the generic status of Cenozoic species previously assigned to '<i>Pleurotomaria</i>' Defrance, 1826 is presented. Only a few Cenozoic pleurotomariid gastropods have been reported from the Indian subcontinent. Here we report four species from the Oligocene of the Kutch Basin and the Early Miocene (Burdigalian) of the Dwarka Basin of Gujarat, western India, of which two are described as new: <i>Perotrochus bermotiensis</i> n. sp. in the genus <i>Perotrochus</i> Fischer, 1885, and <i>Entemnotrochus kathiawarensis</i> n. sp., <em>Entemnotrochus </em>cf. <i>bianconii</i>, and <i>Entemnotrochus</i>? sp. 1 in the genus <i>Entemnotrochus</i> Fischer, 1885.</p>

A Bloody Difficult Woman: Mayalee Dancing Girl Vs. the East India Company
<p>The images that accompany this podcast may be found here: <a href="https://gate.sc?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblogs.bl.uk%2Fasian-and-african%2F2019%2F03%2Fmusicians-and-dancers-in-the-india-office-records.html&token=2f0bcb-1-1609324650767">blogs.bl.uk/asian-and-african/2…office-records.html</a></p> <p>In 1818, the East India Company signed a treaty with the autonomous Rajput states of Jaipur and Jodhpur, offering British political and military protection in exchange for heavy cash tribute. By the early 1830s, these states were swimming in debt and increasingly resisting the Company's influence. So in 1835 the Company took direct control over the revenue of the salt lake at Sambhar, still one of India’s largest sources of that most precious of commodities, salt. Sambhar Lake was returned to Jaipur's and Jodhpur’s control in 1842 when, having been brought to the brink of ruin by the Company’s protection racket, their arrears were written off by the Government in Calcutta. Short-lived and little-studied, the Sambhar Lake affair left behind a set of financial accounts in the East India Company records that are alive with details of musicians and dancers, the cycle of Sambhar's festival year, and the economics of such cultural production.</p> <p>One musician in particular stands forth from Jaipur's accounts as exceptional, Mayalee “dancing girl”. As well as being paid a monthly cash stipend, she received 25 maunds of salt annually, and was clearly one of Sambhar’s chief courtesans. Little exculpatory notes in the margins of successive Company accounts reveal that Mayalee successfully resisted the Company’s attempt to force her to give up her salt stipend in exchange for cash. Was she merely protecting a nice little sideline selling salt? Or did the more lofty ideal of “faithfulness to the salt” (namak-halali) underpin her resistance? Societies in balance: Monumentality and feasting activities among southern Naga communities, Northeast India (Data repository)
<p>The files provide supplementary information for the paper "Societies in balance: Monumentality and feasting activities among southern Naga communities, Northeast India".</p> <p>In accordance with the content and research questions of the article, this repository includes information on the megalithic monuments, as well as transcripts of the interviews conducted in the village of Rünguzu (Nagaland, India). Therefore, both the quantitative, and the qualitative results presented in the article could be reconstructed and reproduced on the basis of this repository.</p> <p>Information concerning the megalithic monuments of all the villages included in the analyses of the article are given in .csv format. The files include details of the monument type, the orientation of the monuments, the metric measures of the monuments, as well as the social affiliation of the monument builders (if available). These data are the basis for the comparative analyses of the megalithic monuments of the different villages, as well as the detailed analyses of the village Rünguzu. All box plots and bar charts presented in the article are completely based on the data made available here.</p> <p>Secondly, this repository includes transcripts of the interviews which were conducted in the village of Rünguzu. The qualitative descriptions of the village structure itself, the feasting activities, as well as the details of megalithic building activities are based on these interviews. Additionally, social anthropological literature and studies were vital as additional sources of information. The transcripts are, apart from the interviewers, completely anonymised in accordance to ethical standards in the publication of interviews.</p>
