Exploring the relation between fundamental frequency and spectral envelope in the perception of musical instrument sounds – sound files and participant responses

<p>This database contains synthesized instrument sounds (sounds.zip), participant responses (data.zip), and a key for the stimulus order (stimKey.zip) as complementary data to [1].</p> <p>Sounds include individual stimuli for two experiments. Experiment 1 contains stimuli used for sound pleasantness and sound brightness ratings. Every rating scale includes three acoustic conditions: congruent, incongruent, and fixed, corresponding to the relation of fundamental frequency (F0) and spectral envelope (SE). See [1] for further details on this matter. Experiment 2 contains stimuli for four synthesized instrument sounds: violin, alto voice, clarinet, and tuba. Sounds were synthesized using congruent spectral envelopes (all), and register fixed spectral envelopes (low, mid, high).</p> <p>All sounds are mono signals with a sampling frequency of 44100 Hz in WAV format.</p> <p>Data includes four sets of participant response data: sound pleasantness ratings (Exp. 1), sound brightness ratings (Exp. 1), sound pleasantness ratings (Exp. 2), and sound plausibility ratings (Exp. 2).</p> <p>StimKey provides values for the first and second principal components of the synthesis space for the pleasantness (1 to 81) and brightness (1 to 16) stimulus numbers for Exp. 1.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Names convention for Exp. 2 sounds:</p> <p>InstrumentName_congruencyCondition_F0..wav</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>References:</p> <p>[1] Jacobsen, S. and Siedenburg, K. Genetic instruments for blood cell traits

<p>This dataset includes summary statistics for genetic instruments for 9 blood cell trait phenotypes. These genetic instruments were developed in the UK Biobank and were used in several Mendelian randomization studies, including an analysis of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Kachuri et al. 2021; PMID 34469753) and glioma subtypes (Kachuri et al. 2024). <p>This repository hosts the data from Meli M. 2024: The potential recording of North Ionian Gyre&rsquo;s reversals as a decadal signal in sea level during the instrumental period. <em>Scientific Reports, </em><strong>14</strong>, 4907. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-024-55579-4</p> <p>The dataset contains:</p> <p>- Python code for analysis of altimetry products ("satellite.py") and tide gauge time series ("tg.py").</p> <p>- The "satellite" folder contains txt files, each representing the annual time series of the first (_1) and second (_2) oscillatory modes decomposed from the satellite altimetry signal and averaged over specific sub-basins. The nc file, on the other hand, contains the time series for every grid point of the altimetry product, along with the various layers (modes) decomposed from the original signal.</p> <p>The "tide_gauges" folder contains npy files, each representing the annual time&nbsp;series of all oscillatory modes decomposed at each tide gauge selected for this&nbsp;analysis. The csv file contains the sub-basin and regional averaged signals of the&nbsp;second oscillatory mode, along with their standard deviations.</p> <p><strong>UPDATE</strong>: In version 2 of the repository, the file IMFs_array.nc (located in the folder satellite.zip) has been updated to IMFs_array_v2.nc. In this version, the land areas in Mode 2 have been masked.</p>

Cardiac patch transplantation instruments for robotic minimally invasive cardiac surgery: initial proof-of-concept designs and surgery in a porcine cadaver

<p>BACKGROUND: Damaged cardiac tissues could potentially be regenerated by transplanting bioengineered cardiac patches to the heart surface. To be fully paradigm-shifting, such patches may need to be transplanted using minimally invasive robotic cardiac surgery (not only traditional open surgery). Here, we present novel robotic designs, initial prototyping and a new surgical operation for instruments to transplant patches <em>via </em>robotic minimally invasive heart surgery. METHODS: Robotic surgical instruments and automated control systems were designed, tested with simulation software and prototyped. Surgical proof-of-concept testing was performed on a pig cadaver. RESULTS: Three robotic instrument designs were developed. The first (called &ldquo;Claw&rdquo; for the claw-like patch holder at the tip) operates on a rack and pinion mechanism. The second design (&ldquo;Shell-Beak&rdquo;) uses adjustable folding plates and rods with a bevel gear mechanism. The third (&ldquo;HeartStamp&rdquo;) utilizes a stamp platform protruding through an adjustable ring. For the HeartStamp, rods run through a cylindrical structure designed to fit a uniportal Video-Assisted Thorascopic Surgery (VATS) surgical port. Designed to work with or without a sterile sheath, the patch is pushed out by the stamp platform as it protrudes. Two instrument robotic control systems were designed, simulated <em>in silico</em> and one of these underwent early &lsquo;sizing and learning&rsquo; prototyping as a proof-of-concept. To reflect real surgical conditions, surgery was run &ldquo;live&rdquo; and reported exactly (as-it-happened). We successfully picked up, transferred and released a patch onto the heart using the HeartStamp in a pig cadaver model. CONCLUSION: These world-first designs, early prototypes and a novel surgical operation pave the way for robotic instruments for automated keyhole patch transplantation to the heart. Our novel approach is presented for others to build upon free from restrictions or cost &ndash; potentially a significant moment in myocardial regeneration surgery which may open a therapeutic avenue for patients unfit for traditional open surgery.</p>

A map showing the locations of instruments used during the Convective Storm Initiation Project (CSIP) pilot

The CSIP pilot project was conducted in July 2004 centred around the Chilbolton radar facility where there is a 25 metre radar dish with two of the most sophisticated meteorological radars in the world. The pilot project utilised many of the instruments and facilities from the NCAS Universities' Facility for Atmospheric Measurement (UFAM) including a Cessna aircraft, wind profiler, Doppler lidar, sodar and automatic weather stations and scientists from the universities of Aberystwyth, Leeds, Reading, Salford, Essex, Bath and UMIST as well also from the Met Office.

3D printing lifts the lid on black box instruments

<p>Within analytical chemistry, chemical instruments involve numerous interconnected parts working cohesively towards a specific functionality. However, these highly complex mechanisms cannot be fully depicted with a 2-dimensional textbook model or image, leading to confusion or misconceptions during the learning process. To address this comprehension gap, an array of chemical instrument components have been designed and fabricated with 3D printing to create a hands-on learning experience. The models developed were created in interlocking parts to allow disassembly and investigation of the inner workings of each instrument component. This work produced a series of teaching aids and dynamic models for common instruments including a quadrupole, quadrupole-ion-trap, orbitrap, FTICR mass spectrometer; a GC injection port, FID, and ECD detectors; an HPLC injector; an ICP torch and nebulizer; a Michaelson interferometer; a basic monochromator; and a shatterbox sample preparation device. These models were designed to be interactive and hand-held 1:1 scale models of commercial instrument components. Using these models, students' learning may be expanded from 2 to 3 dimensions; providing hands-on experience with modern laboratory instrumentation impossible with commercial instrumentation. Models were used in a small Analytical Chemistry lecture (<em>n</em> = 8) which demonstrated positive student reception, especially for models with kinematic relations to instrument functionality.</p>

Raw data and stimuli for assessing the perceived reverberation in different rooms for a set of musical instrument sounds

<p>This set of data and sound stimuli was used in the study by Osses, McLachlan, and Kohlrausch (2020) to assess the perceived reverberation --including measurements and simulations-- for different instrument sounds in eight different rooms. The following are the directories that are provided:</p> <ul> <li><strong>00-Experiment-WAE_GM_201712</strong>: Web Audio Evaluation tool (WAE) used to run the listening experiment with 24 participants. Follow the instructions in README.txt to get the experiment running.</li> <li><strong>01-Stimuli</strong>: Sound stimuli as exactly used during the listening experiments.</li> <li><strong>02-Raw-data</strong> and <strong>03-Results-summary</strong>: Outputs from WAE for each of the participants. The raw data contained in these XML files were extracted and stored in &#39;03-Results-summary&#39;</li> <li><strong>04-Stimuli-9s-for-simulations</strong>: Same sounds as in &#39;01-Stimuli&#39; but truncated to have a duration of 9 s. These sounds were used as input to an implementation (Osses et al. 2017, 2020) of the model by van Dorp et al. (2013).</li> </ul> <p>The paper figures can be reproduced in two MATLAB toolboxes: fastACI (script: publ_osses2020a_JASA_EL_figs.m) and AMT (script: exp_osses2020.m, availability as of 2023).</p>
