Open Lowland Environmental Monitoring Station, Black Rock Forest, NY, raw hourly data

Black Rock Forest maintains the Open Lowland real-time weather station at 129 Continental Rd, Cornwall, NY. The system was designed to measure air temperature (average, maximum, minimum), relative humidity (average, maximum, minimum), average vapor pressure, dew point temperature, photosynthetically active solar radiation, net global solar radiation, mean horizontal wind speed, mean wind direction, standard deviation of wind direction, maximum wind speed, precipitation amount, barometric pressure (average, maximum, minimum), and average soil temperature at two depths. Other sensors are used to measure snow depth, CO2 concentration, and albedo. Data are collected from the Open Lowland Station using a CR1000. Most instruments have a sample interval of 1 minute. The program records averages, minimum or maximum of those 1-minute readings every hour. Rainfall is totals for the 1 hour period.

Zooplankton density and size data in Lake Awosting, Lake Minnewaska, and Mohonk Lake, NY, USA 2013-2018

Crustaceans and large rotifers were collected from three Northeastern U.S. lakes, Lake Awosting (fishless), Lake Minnewaska (piscivores only), Mohonk Lake (planktivores and piscivores), from 2013-2018 to assess differences in community composition, density, and biomass across lakes with different fish communities. In 2017, we collected zooplankton at four discrete depths within each lake (1m, 5m, 8m, and 12m for Mohonk/15m for Awosting and Minnewaska) on three separate sampling occasions during the summer using a Van Dorn sampler. Zooplankton were filtered with a 125-mm mesh sieve and preserved in 70% EtOH in the field. From 2013-2018, 10m vertical tows were also collected using an 80 um Wisconsin plankton net in each lake. These datasets include abundance of organisms across spatial and temporal scales, as well as the individual size and taxonomic identification for all individuals counted.

Red spruce foliar nutritional and metabolic responses to N, Ca, and N+Ca additions in a plot level study from Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest NH, Adirondack State Park, NY and Groton State Forest, VT from 1997-2000.

Plot Level Ca, N, Ca+N Study Background: Three mature red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) – balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) stands with closed canopies from across the northeastern United States were selected to assess the effects of N and Ca additions on forest growth. These sites included Groton, VT (Groton State Forest), Big Moose Lake, NY (Adirondack State Park) and Watershed 9 in the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, NH. Site descriptions can be found in the pdf file included in this dataset. Full site descriptions have been published in Kulmatiski et al, 2007, Nitrogen and calcium additions increase forest growth in northeastern USA spruce–fir forests, Canadian Journal of Forest Research 37: 1574-1585. This publication also provides more in-depth site and soil descriptions. In 1992, three replicate 30 m by 30 m plots were randomly assigned to each of four treatment levels: control (control), Ca addition (Ca), N addition (N), or Ca + N addition (Ca + N) in NY and NH (for a total of 12 plots at each site). In VT, only control and Ca treatments were established due to limited space and research goals (for a total of 6 plots). Beginning in July 1992 through July 2000, N amendments (100 kilograms of NH4NO3-N per hectare per year), Ca amendments (80 kilograms of CaSO4-Ca plus 80 kilograms of CaCl2-Ca per hectare per year), and Ca + N (same dosage as separate applications) amendments were hand broadcast as commercial grade salts. Applications were made in June, July, and August to each plot in each year. SUMMARY: The main objectives of this study were to evaluate changes over time (1997-2000) in foliar metabolism of mature red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) trees in response to additions of nitrogen, Ca, or N +Ca supplementation. N was applied as NH4NO3 and Ca was applied as gypsum [CaSO4 .2H2O (2X) + CaCl2 .2H2O (1X)] and Ca + N treatment was a combination of both at the same concentrations Three sites received these treatments; Groton, VT (Groton State Forest), Bi

Each simulated person was placed randomly along a road within his or her census tract of residence and then&nbsp;independently performed road-network-constrained, truncated L&eacute;vy walks for 8 hours of simulated time, moving at 4 km per hour. Conjugate observation data between DMSP satellites and all-sky imager of Chinese Yellow River station at Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard from January 2005 to December 2009

<p>Chinese Arctic Yellow River Station (YRS) locates at Ny-&Aring;lesund, Svalbard with the geographic coordinates (78.92&deg;N, 11.93&deg;E) and the corrected geomagnetic latitude 76.24&deg;. The relation between local time and universal time is MLT&asymp;UT+3hr. In November 2003, a set of monochromatic auroral observation system was installed at YRS, which is consisted of three identical all-sky imageries (ASIs) with the filters at 427.8nm, 557.7nm and 630.0nm, respectively. DMSP (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program) satellites are a collection of polar-orbit weather satellites launched by the U.S. department of defense. This series of satellites is sun synchronous satellite, which takes about 101 minutes to orbit the earth, has an altitude of about 835-850km, an inclination of about 96&deg;, and crosses the equatorial plane daily from south to north (ascending segment) and from north to south (descending segment) at a fixed time (DMSP F13 is at 05:45LT and 17:45LT, and F15 is at 09:30LT and 21:30LT). DMSP satellite is equipped with Special Sensor for Particle Flux (SSJ/4), which can measure the fluxes of downgoing electrons and ions with energies between from 30eV to 30keV in 19 energy steps (34, 49, 71, 101, 150, 218, 320, 460, 670, 960 eV, and 1.4, 2.1, 3.0, 4.4, 6.5, 9.5, 14.0, 20.5, 29.5 keV), with a time resolution of 1 second. According to the orbit of the DMSP satellites and the observation of the ASIs of YRS, we obtained the conjugate observation periods of the satellite flying over the ASI.</p> <p>During the period from January 2005 to December 2009, a total of 136 conjugate observation events were obtained. Moreover, according to the morphological characteristics of discrete aurora in the all-sky image, 136 events are classified according to four typical forms of dayside discrete auroras, namely 27 events of drapery dayside corona (DDC), 24 events of radial dayside corona (RDC), 37 events of hot-spot aurora (HSA), and 48 events of arc aurora (ARC). The event list of 136 events is recorded in the &ldquo;asi&amp;dmsp@YRS03-09-v2.xlsx&rdquo; file. The EPS file gives the trajectory of the DMSP satellite crossing the ASI in each conjugate observation event, while the JPG files are the corresponding all-sky images.</p>

This dataset was obtained decomposing the three components (short-lived, long-lived and near-constant progenies) considering the different decay processes.</p> <p>Raw data expressed in counts per second per cubic meter are presented in the first sheet. Smoothed data are included in the second sheet and meteorological hourly averages are reported in the third one.</p>

Passive Open-Path Fouriertransform Infrared spectroscopy (OP-FTIR) measurements in the Arctic environment of Ny Ålesund / Svalbard 2023

<p>In the Polar MOSES campaign 2023, a ground-based remote sensing method &ndash; OP-FTIR spectroscopy- which is proven to be a flexible long-path technique for the characterization of larger areas was used. This method is able to simultaneously detect various volatile atmospheric compounds relevant for environmental assessment with a single rapid measurement. Many greenhouse gas molecules (e.g., CO<sub>2</sub>, H<sub>2</sub>O, CH<sub>4</sub>) have unique signatures (absorption or emission bands) in the measured spectral IR range. IR spectroscopy allows spatial and non-invasive characterization of emissions and is a useful method to capture emissions along the coastline, both seaward and landward.</p> <p>The passive technique was applied in a mobile mode to obtain IR spectra at different relevant locations. In order to investigate the near surface atmospheric composition, the mobile passive OP-FTIR spectroscopic scanning measurements was executed with Bruker RAPID devices to cover marine and terrestrial areas. The RAPID passive detection systems was deployed for 360&deg; remote sensing of threats at distances up to 5000 m. Initially, the survey&#39;s primary objective was to qualitatively interpret spectra, enabling the identification of emission sources and the characterization of the heterogeneous emission pattern. This was achieved through the measurements in different directions to allow the direct comparisons of the various compartments under investigation and their potential interactions.</p>

Electromagnetic Induction Measurements near Ny Alesund

<p>Electromagnetic induction is a non-invasive mapping technique used in a variety of applications including geological mapping and civil engineering, agriculture and forestry, environmental monitoring, groundwater protection, mineral exploration and archaeology.&nbsp; Electromagnetic induction is mainly used to measure the (apparent) electrical conductivity of the subsurface, which depends on various soil properties such as clay content, water content and salinity. The nature and strength of the relationships between electrical conductivity and soil properties are site-specific.</p> <p>The instrument used, the EM38-MK2, measures both the quadrature (conductivity) and the inphase (magnetic susceptibility) components at two different depths, all at the same time, without the need for ground contact. The aim of the measurements was to improve the understanding of thaw-driven landscape dynamics in permafrost regions and to assess the vulnerability of permafrost to thaw.</p> <p>The measurements were carried out in August 2023 in the vicinity of the Ny Alesund research station in Svalbard, in particular in the vicinity of the Bayelva long-term observatory site. The data are raw, no processing has been done. A detailed metadata description is available in the pdf format.</p>
