Swimming and defense - competing needs across ontogeny in armored fishes (Agonidae)

<p>Biological armors are potent model systems for understanding the complex series of competing demands on protective exoskeletons; after all, armored organisms are the product of millions of years of refined engineering under the harshest conditions. Fishes are no strangers to armor, with various types of armor plating common to the 400 million years of evolution in both jawed and jawless fishes. Here we focus on the poachers (Agonidae), a family of armored fishes native to temperate waters of the Pacific rim. We examined armor morphology, body stiffness, and swimming performance in the Northern Spearnose Poacher (<i>Agonopsis vulsa</i>) over ontogeny.  As juveniles, these fishes make frequent nocturnal forays into the water column in search of food, while heavily armored adults are bound to the benthos. Most armor dimensions and density increase with body length, as does body stiffness. Juvenile poachers have enlarged spines on their armor whereas adults invest more mineral in armor plate bases. Adults are stiffer and accelerate faster than juveniles with an anguilliform swimming mode. Subadults more closely approximate adults more than smaller juveniles, with regards to both swimming and armor mechanics. Poacher armor serves multiple functions over ontogeny, from facilitating locomotion, slowing sinking, and providing defense.</p>

Simple muscle-lever systems are not so simple: The need for dynamic analyses to predict lever mechanics that maximize speed

<p><span>Here we argue that quasi-static analyses are insufficient to predict the speed of an organism from its skeletal mechanics alone (i.e. lever arm mechanics). Using a musculoskeletal numerical model we specifically demonstrate that 1) a single lever morphology can produce a range of output velocities, and 2) a single output velocity can be produced by a drastically different set of lever morphologies. These two sets of simulations quantitatively demonstrate that it is incorrect to assume a one-to-one relationship between lever arm morphology and organism maximum velocity. We then use a statistical analysis to quantify what parameters are determining output velocity, and find that muscle physiology, geometry, and limb mass are all extremely important. Lastly we argue that the functional output of a simple lever is dependent on the dynamic interaction of two opposing factors: those decreasing velocity at low mechanical advantage (low torque and muscle work) and those decreasing velocity at high mechanical advantage (muscle force-velocity effects). These dynamic effects are not accounted for in static analyses and are inconsistent with a force-velocity tradeoff in lever systems.</span> <span>Therefore, we advocate for a dynamic, integrative approach that takes these factors into account when analyzing changes in skeletal levers.</span></p>

Satellite Constellation Internet Affordability and Need

<p>Large satellite constellations in low-Earth orbit seek to be the infrastructure for global broadband Internet and other telecommunication needs. We briefly review the impacts of satellite constellations on astronomy and show that the Internet service offered by these satellites will primarily target populations where it is unaffordable, not needed, or both. The harm done by tens to hundreds of thousands of low-Earth orbit satellites to astronomy, stargazers worldwide, and the environment is not acceptable.</p> <p>This dataset shows that there is a small population that both needs and can afford satellite Internet service. The remainder either does not need or cannot afford it. For each country, we plot the estimated cost of satellite constellation Internet service as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) per capita against percentage of individuals currently with Internet access.&nbsp;Affordable access is classed as &lt;10% of GDP per capita; need is classed as &lt;75% of the population currently having Internet access. 2010 ISMRM Recon Challenge - Need for Speed

<p><strong><em>Need for Speed</em></strong>.&nbsp; Data were simulated using collected projection X-ray of an arterial bolus injection in a patient with an AVM.&nbsp; X-ray data were collected 3 frames per second, for a total of 10 seconds (31 collected frames) which span wash-in to wash-out.&nbsp; These were linearly interpolated in time between frames to create a total of 200 temporal images, each with 512x512 resolution.&nbsp; B1-maps (provided with data) derived from an axial slice through a water phantom using an 8-channel head coil were superimposed on the image to create 8 &ldquo;coil&rdquo; images.&nbsp; Independent noise was added to each channel.&nbsp; The data were synthesized over 200 trajectories, each with 2000 points.&nbsp; Data for each trajectory are synthesized from one temporal frame of the time series.<em>&nbsp;&nbsp;</em><br /> <br /> <strong>Click here</strong>&nbsp;to get descriptions of trajectories (the pdf files), read/write code for C and Matlab, and B<sub>1&nbsp;</sub>maps.&nbsp;<br /> <strong>Click here</strong>&nbsp;for the NFS truth data set, which has no header, is floating point (4 byte) real data, and arranged as a 3D array of 512x512x37.</p> <p>You may then choose from any of the following sets:</p> <p>A.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Click here</strong>&nbsp;to get a&nbsp;<strong>Spiral</strong>&nbsp;trajectory coordinates and data. PHYAFB: A new database of the analysis of the physiological needs in amateur female basketball during official matches

<p>The Physiological Analysis of Female Basketball players (PHYAFB) database is a valuable resource for studying the physiological demands placed on female amateur basketball players during official games. This database includes heart rate data from ten female players aged between 18 and 26 years, which were collected during ten high-stress matches played during a crucial relegation phase. In total, almost 350,000 heart rate samples have been reported. The data is stored in CSV format, facilitating easy access and analysis, and the database comes with Python&nbsp;source code to support initial examination.</p><p>The primary aim of the PHYAFB database is to provide a useful reference for other teams facing similar situations. Furthermore, the database represents a unique and valuable resource for sports scientists, coaches, and trainers seeking to comprehend the physiological demands of female basketball players during official competitions. Through the analysis of heart rate data, coaches and trainers can identify the intensity and duration of physical activity during games, enabling the development of more effective training programs. Additionally, the database can be used to compare the physiological demands placed on male and female basketball players or to investigate the impact of different game strategies on player performance.</p>

Artifactual orthologs and the need for diligent data exploration in complex phylogenomic datasets: A museomic case study from the Andean flora

<p>The Andes mountains of western South America are a globally important biodiversity hotspot, yet there is a paucity of resolved phylogenies for plant clades from this region. Filling an important gap to our understanding of the World's richest flora, we present the first phylogeny of <em>Freziera</em> (Pentaphylacaceae), an Andean-centered, cloud forest radiation. Our dataset was obtained via hybrid-enriched target sequence capture of Angiosperms353 universal loci for 50 of the ca. 75 spp., obtained almost entirely from herbarium specimens. We identify high phylogenomic complexity in <em>Freziera</em>, including a significant proportion of paralogous loci and a high degree of gene tree discordance. Via gene tree filtering, by-eye observation of gene trees, and detailed examination of warnings from recently improved assembly pipelines, we identified that cryptic paralogs (i.e., the presence of only one copy of a multi-copy gene due to assembly errors) were a major source of gene tree heterogeneity that had a negative impact on phylogenetic inference and support. These cryptic paralogs likely result from limitations in data collection that are common in museomics, combined with a history of genome duplication; they may be common in plant phylogenomic datasets. After accounting for cryptic paralogs as source of gene tree error, we identified a significant, but non-specific signal of introgression using Patterson's D and f4 statistics. Despite phylogenomic complexity, we were able to resolve <em>Freziera</em> into nine well-supported subclades whose histories have been shaped by myriad evolutionary processes, including incomplete lineage sorting, historical gene flow, and gene duplication. Our results highlight the complexities of plant phylogenomics, and point to the need to test for multiple sources of gene tree discordance via careful examination of empirical datasets.</p>

Relationships between needs satisfaction and the quality of motivation with academic engagement in pre-service physical education teachers

<p><span>Academic engagement has been identified as a key determinant in the learning process. Although research on initial teacher education has focused on understanding the mechanism that can foster strong academic engagement, little is known about the roles that basic psychological need satisfaction and academic motivation may perform. The objective of this research was to examine the predictive relationships between basic psychological need satisfaction (i.e., autonomy, competence, relatedness, and novelty) and academic engagement, considering the role of academic motivation. A cross-sectional and non-randomized design was used. A total of 920 students (61.8% male; <em>M</em><sub>age </sub>= 24.73; <em>SD </em><sub>age </sub>=5.34) participated from different universities. The results from structural equation modelling revealed that competence and novelty satisfaction significantly and positively predicted academic engagement. Autonomous motivation significantly mediated the association of competence and autonomy satisfaction with academic engagement. This research underscores the importance of considering competence and autonomy satisfaction as facilitators of autonomous motivation and academic engagement in pre-service teachers. </span></p>

The survey used asked the informants to provide their opinion regarding different statements in a scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree).
