Data from: Price equations for understanding the response of ecosystem function to community change
<p>Biodiversity-ecosystem function research in natural ecosystems would benefit from new theoretical and analytical tools that match common characteristics of observational community data. To this end, we developed a novel, abundance-based version of the ecological Price equation in both discrete and continuous forms. As part of the presentation of this new method, we conducted two demonstration analyses.</p> <p>The first analysis focuses on pollination of watermelon by wild bees. We net-collected wild pollinator specimens from standard areas of flowering watermelon crop at 16 replicated farms in 2012. We also measured how many pollen grains each bee species deposited per visit. These per-visit pollen deposition rates were estimated as a genus-level property, as is common for landscape pollination studies. To determine total pollination for each bee species at each site, we multiplied pollinator visitation rates and per-visit pollen deposition. The attached data includes site by species matrices for the abundance (watermelon_com.csv) and per-capita pollen deposition (watermelon_fun.csv) of bee species.</p> <p>The second analysis focuses on changes in total community biomass of stream invertebrates collected from 25 sites along a strong, continuous pollution gradient. These data were previously published by Pomeranz et al. (2019), accessible at the Dryad link given below. Specimens were individually measured and assigned to one of six functional groups. Finer taxonomic resolution is available in the original study, but we use functional groups here to get enough data to effectively model. The attached data includes site by functional group matrices for the abundance (stream_inverts.csv) and per-capita biomass (stream_invert_size.csv) of stream invertebrate functional groups, and a third .csv which describes the level of pollution at each site (steam_data.csv).</p> <p>The code is a single R code file which produces the results and figures found in the manuscript. We have also included a README and several .csv files (those described above) that need to be read in.</p> <p>These data may be useful for other analyses of variation in ecosystem function across sites. We stress that the stream invertebrate data were collected by Pomeranz et al. (2019) and they should be cited for any use those data. American Beaver: GPS and VHF tag data from resident and translocated beavers on the Price and San Rafael Rivers, Utah
<p>Wildlife translocations can dramatically alter animal movement behavior. Thus, identifying common movement patterns post-translocation can aid in setting expectations and anticipating animal behavior in subsequent efforts. American and Eurasian beavers (Castor canadensis; C. fiber) are frequently translocated for reintroduction efforts, to mitigate human-wildlife conflict, and for use as an ecosystem restoration tool. However, little is known about movement behavior of translocated beavers post-release, especially in desert rivers where resources are patchy and dynamic. We identified space-use patterns to develop an expectation framework of beaver movement behavior for future beaver-assisted restoration efforts. We captured, tagged, translocated, and monitored 41 nuisance American beavers in desert river restoration sites on the Price and San Rafael Rivers, Utah, USA, and compared their space use to 16 resident beavers. We tracked beavers 2-7 times per week from May through October in 2019 and 2020 via GPS locations and radio-telemetry, and from May 2019 through March 2021 via passive integrated antennae installed in the rivers. Resident adult beavers were detected at a mean maximum distance of 0.86 ± 0.21 river kilometers (km; ±1 SE), while resident subadult (11.00 ± 4.24 km), translocated adult (19.69 ± 3.76 km), and translocated subadult (21.09 ± 5.54 km) beavers were detected at substantially greater maximum distances. Based on coarse-scale movement models, translocated and resident subadult beavers moved substantially farther from release sites and faster than resident adult beavers up to six months post-release. In contrast, based on fine-scale, short-term movement models over 5-minute intervals, we observed similar median distance traveled between resident adult and translocated beavers. Our findings suggest day-to-day activities such as foraging and resting were largely unaltered by translocation, but translocated beavers exhibited coarse-scale movement behavior most similar to dispersal by resident subadults. Coarse-scale movement rates decreased with time since release, suggesting that translocated beavers adjusted to the novel environment over time and eventually settled into a home range similar to resident adult beavers. This is the first study comparing resident and translocated beaver movement behavior in the same system. Understanding translocated beaver movement behavior in response to a novel desert system can help future beaver-assisted restoration efforts to identify appropriate release sites and strategies.</p>
Sectoral coverage and prices of carbon pricing mechanisms introduced since 1990
<p>Over the last 30 years, the number of jurisdictions that have implemented a carbon pricing mechanism has grown significantly. Today, 43 national and 32 subnational jurisdictions have such a mechanism in at least one sector. However, a standardized and centralized record of the sectoral scope and prices applied to CO<sub>2</sub> emissions by these mechanisms is lacking.</p> <p>This dataset provides an essential contribution to filling that gap. It covers mechanisms introduced since 1990 at the national and subnational levels and is the most comprehensive attempt at providing a systematic description of carbon pricing mechanisms in terms of their sectoral (and fuel) scope and the associated price signal.</p> <p>A key feature of this dataset is that it provides information structured by territorial jurisdiction, not carbon pricing mechanism. This is achieved by mapping information available for each mechanism onto jurisdictions. It should prove of interest to a wide range of parties, including academic researchers, policy analysts, and interested civil society organizations.</p>

<p>Access to medicines for hypertension and diabetes mellitus (DM) management is challenging in resource-limited countries. We sought to assess whether differential pricing of medicines based on socio-economic status would improve affordability of antihypertensive and anti-diabetic medications. A quasi-experimental, prospective cohort study was implemented at five Ghanaian health facilities, using differentially priced medicines. </p>
Examining the oil price and renewable energy price nexus: Comparative wavelet analysis for the aftermath of 2008 financial crisis, shale oil crisis and COVID-19 pandemic.
<p><span>In this study, we conducted a wavelet analysis on the dependence between renewable energy indices and Brent oil index (Brent) for the period of 21st November, 2003 till 24th May, 2024. The objective of the paper includes comparing the co-movement of renewable energy stock prices and oil prices during three different crises including the global financial crisis, shale oil crisis and the covid-19 pandemic. We found that the dependence is similar for both Europe and on a global scale during the pre-crises time, where renewable energy prices lead Brent oil prices in the short and medium term. Furthermore, results confirm that there is substitutability between oil prices and renewable energy prices before all crises which shows a positive correlation. The results further show that the short and medium term dependence disappears after the oil crisis and financial crisis which is supported by the sudden loss in demand for oil. These findings show that co-movement changes between the three crises where there is no dependence between the indices after the financial and oil crisis while there is a negative correlation after the covid-19 pandemic. These findings could have significant ramifications for investors seeking to mitigate risks and for policymakers making decisions about supporting the advancement of renewable energy while understanding the change of behaviour between the two crises.</span></p>
