Data from: Designing eco-evolutionary experiments for restoration projects: Opportunities and constraints revealed during Stickleback introductions

<p>Eco-evolutionary experiments are typically conducted in semi-unnatural controlled settings, such as mesocosms; yet inferences about how evolution and ecology interact in the real world would surely benefit from experiments in natural uncontrolled settings. Opportunities for such experiments are rare but do arise in the context of restoration ecology – where different "types" of a given species can be introduced into different "replicate" locations. Designing such experiments requires wrestling with consequential questions. Q1. Which specific "types" of a focal species should be introduced to the restoration location? Q2. How many sources of each type should be used – and should they be mixed together? Q3. Which specific source populations should be used? Q4. Which type or population(s) should be introduced into which restoration sites? We recently grappled with these questions when designing an eco-evolutionary experiment with threespine stickleback (<em>Gasterosteus aculeatus</em>) introduced into nine small lakes and ponds on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska that required restoration. After considering the options at length, we decided to use benthic versus limnetic ecotypes (Q1) from a mixture of four source populations of each ecotype (Q2) selected based on trophic morphology (Q3), and introduced into restoration lakes in a paired design (Q4). We hope that the present paper outlining the alternatives and resulting choices will provide the rationales clear for future studies leveraging our experiment, while also proving useful for investigators considering similar experiments in the future.</p>

Costs of Peatland Restoration in Scotland: Data underpinning MACC analysis

<p>A dataset containing anonymised records outlining the costs of a selection of<span>&nbsp;</span>peatland restoration projects in Scotland that have been granted funding by NatureScot since 2016, merged with a set of environmental/geographic variables. These data in turn are used for underpinning the marginal abatement curve (MACC) analysis as a basis of a spatial cost prediction model for potential restoration of degraded peatland in Scotland.&nbsp; The observations in the database represent individual restored sites and the total costs are on a per hectare basis. The variables capture location, spatial dimensions, meteorological conditions, peat conditions, land cover, use and designation specific for each site. The information has been sourced from various publicly accessible domains, namely the Met Office, James Hutton Institute, Centre from Ecology and Hydrology, Ordnance Survey, NatureScot and Centre for Environmental Data Analysis.&nbsp;</p> <p><span>&nbsp;</span></p>

Summary for policymakers of the assessment report on land degradation and restoration of the Intergovernmental SciencePolicy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services: Figure SPM.1

<p>The purpose of Figure&nbsp; SPM.1 is to support the statement that land degradation occurs just about everywhere in the world (i.e. it is &lsquo;pervasive&rsquo;), takes many forms, and that examples of successful restoration are also widespread. The figure consists of a backdrop map of the world from a multiple land degradation perspective, showing the level of uncertainty between studies, overlaid with dots representing all the places specifically mentioned in the eight chapters of the main Assessment Report on Land Degradation and Restoration, including case studies of both degradation and restoration. Around the map are brief notes regarding the main forms of degradation encountered.</p>
