Teacher-led inquiry in technology-supported school communities

Although substantial work has been done in the articulation of the learning design process, little is known about how learning designs are experienced by students and teachers, especially in the context of schools. This paper empirically examines if a teacher inquiry model, as a tool for systematic research by teachers into their own practice, facilitates the connection between the design and data-informed reflection on TEL interventions in two school communities. High school teachers participated in a learning design professional development program supported by a web-based community platform integrating a teacher inquiry tool (TILE). A multiple case study was conducted aimed at understanding: (a) current teacher practice and (b) teacher involvement in inquiry cycles of design and classroom implementations with technologies. Multiple data sources were used over a one year period including focus groups transcripts, teacher interview protocols, digital artifacts, and questionnaires. Sharing teacher-led inquiries together with learning analytics was perceived as being useful for connecting pedagogical intentions with the evaluation of their enactment with learners, and this differed from their current practice. Teachers’ reflections about their designs focused on the time management of learning activities and their familiarity with the enactment and analytics tools. Results inform how technology can support teacher-led inquiry and collective reflective practice in schools.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p>

Data set from the design of experiment assessment rubric, from university students / future teachers
<p>Using an assessment rubric comprising three levels of success, we evaluated six aspects of designing an experiment, which we call dimensions. This way, specific challenges were identified in two of the dimensions: forming a hypothesis and manipulating the experimental variables, where students often failed to succeed and get lower scores.</p> <p>The data presented here were collected from four (4) diagnostic worksheets, which were made available to students at the beginning of the semester, where a theoretical introduction to the course is given, with reference to learning theories and their use in the teaching of Physics. Therefore, data were collected prior to discussions about the inquiry-based approach, experimental investigations, and the scientific content, such as the concepts and phenomena mentioned in the worksheets. </p> <p>For the present study, we slightly modified and used a rubric that has been proposed to assess the DoE by primary and secondary school students (Lefkos et al., 2011). Pre-post First Aid Interventional Program on Knowledge and Practice of Primary School Teachers in Governmental Basic Schools - River Nile State – Sudan
<p>Children spend most of the time in school where they are exposed to various types of injuries, which influence their present and future state of health. First aid is the treatment of any injury or illness before availability of medical aid. Teacher is the key person who can attend the children for injuries in school through complete knowledge regarding first aid. This study was done among primary school teachers to evaluate the effectiveness of education programon knowledge and practice regarding first aid. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of first aid health education program on knowledge, and practice of primary school teachers in River Nile. Pre and post interventional study design was used to evaluate the effect of first aid training program on knowledge and practice of primary school teachers . Data was derived from 45 respondents participating from AL-matama locality which selected by non-probability convenience sampling technique. Structural questionnaire for knowledge and checklist for practice of first aid practice. Data collected pre and immediate post implementation of first aid health education program. Data analyzed by SPSS version 25. Knowledge about first aid improved from Inadequate 44(97.8%), moderately adequate 1.0(2.2%) and adequate 0.0(0.0%) in pre intervention toInadequate 0.0(0.0%), moderately adequate 8.0(17.8%) and adequate 37(82.2%) post intervention, while also showed improvement in practice from inadequate 45(100%), moderately adequate 0.0(0.0%), and adequate 0.0(0.0%) in pre intervention toInadequate 0.0(0.0%), moderately adequate 4.0(8.9%) and adequate 41(91.1%) post intervention. Paired sample t-test revealed that the mean post-test knowledge score regarding first aidis significantly higher (77.25±3.53) than that of mean pretest knowledge score (39.57± 6.82) (P < 0.001)); mean posttest practice score was significantly higher (85.35 ± 7.29) then mean pretest practice score (30.56± 8.61) (P < 0.001). There is highly increased in Average Percent of correct Answers in knowledge and practice post intervention in relation to pre intervention in all first aid items, there is no significant correlation between education and knowledge practice score pre and post since p-value > 0.05.The result of the study showed effectiveness of the first aid health education program in improving teacher’s knowledge, and is highly effective in improving practice, supported hypotheses.</p>
Educational data collected from teachers - for the analysis of online activities in schools in Romania (during the Covid-19 pandemic, March 2020 - April 2020)
<p>The dataset comes from a questionnaire structured into 24 questions, which can be accessed at <a href="https://forms.gle/bUgYMfoNHh7r6ebs6" target="_new" rel="noopener">https://forms.gle/bUgYMfoNHh7r6ebs6</a>. This questionnaire was completed by 956 respondents and aims to analyze the online activities carried out during March - April 2020, being distributed to teachers.<br>Each question is designed to reveal different aspects of the experiences, skills, and perspectives of teaching staff regarding online teaching and learning.</p> <p>To protect the identity of the respondents and to obtain accurate responses, all data collected from teachers was anonymous. We did not collect any personal information whatsoever. This aspect was made clear to the respondents in the description of the questionnaire.</p>
Training word vectors on text from The Physics Teacher using Word2Vec
<p>This notebook and dataset allows one to play around with word vectors trained on text from articles in the journal <a href="https://pubs.aip.org/aapt/pte">The Physics Teacher</a> published between 1963 (the start of publication) and 2020, around 15000 articles in total.</p> <p>The primary datafile, "TPT_word2vec_words_bigrams_V1.pkl", is a list of cleaned text from these articles. It contains a list, within which each paper is a sub-list. Each sentence in that paper is yet another sub-list which contains the words in that sentence in order. However, in the data cleaning process we have removed “stop words” (like if, and, but, etc.), punctuation, symbols, and numbers, as well as lowercased all words and combined words that frequently go together into one (like “high” and "school” to “high_school”). Here is an example of 3 sentences taken from a random paper: <br> <br>[['magnet', 'spin', 'tape', 'magnetize', 'strongly', 'time', 'pole', 'approach'],<br>['magnet', 'place', 'center', 'counterweight', 'period', 'magnetize', 'pulse', 'twice', 'long'],<br>['trial', 'tape', 'examine', 'sprinkle_iron', 'filing', 'length'], ... ]</p> <p>In the notebook, we create a set of word vectors from these sentences using the Word2Vec technique, first published by Mikolov et al. Note that word vectors are randomly initialized, so we include a random seed to make this training replicable. Changing the seed will alter some of the results (although the changes seem fairly minor).</p> <p>With a trained model, we demonstrate some applications of word vectors: adding and subtracting meanings <br>(for example "experiment" - "uncertainty" = "demonstration") and visualizing low-dimensional representations of word vectors.</p> <p>In order to install the required packages, you can use the requirements.txt file. If using pip, run "pip install requirements.txt". Or, if using Anaconda (recommended), you can use "conda install --file requirements.txt". You will also need the software to run jupyter notebooks, which can be installed with Anaconda or pip.</p>
