BUV/Nimbus-4 Level 1 Radiance and Housekeeping Data in Telemetry Units V001 (BUVN4L1PDB) at GES DISC
The Nimbus-4 BUV Level-1 Radiance and Housekeeping Data in Telemetry Units collection contains the raw counts measured by the Backscatter Ultraviolet Spectrometer every 32 seconds at 12 wavelengths between 250 and 340 nm during the daylit orbit portion. The data collection also contains ephemeris data, experiment subsystem status information, and spacecraft housekeeping and orbit data. This data collection was used to create the Level 1 Radiance U-Tape or RUT product. The data were originally created on IBM 360 machines and archived on magnetic tapes. The data have been restored from the tapes and are now archived on disk in their original IBM binary file format. Each file contains about one orbit of data. The data files consist of 850 2-byte word records which are blocked in up to ten records. The first record in the file is the header record, followed by a series of data records, and ends with a trailer record. A typical orbit file is about 260 kB in size. The BUV instrument was operational from April 10, 1970 until May 6, 1977. In July 1972 the Nimbus-4 solar power array partially failed such that BUV operations were curtailed. Thus data collected in the later years was increasingly sparse, particularly in the equatorial region. This product was previously available from the NSSDC with the identifier ESAC-00024 (old ID 70-025A-05E).
When natal dispersal ends: using satellite telemetry to quantify territory settlement in a long-lived raptor
<p>Breeding territory settlement, as the end point of natal (juvenile) dispersal, is a key juncture in the life history and population dynamics of long-lived raptors. It spatially identifies natal dispersal distance and temporally identifies first recruitment to a breeding population. Its determination can be confused by similar temporary settlement behaviour during dispersal or by post-occupation territorial birds' excursions. Satellite telemetry provides potentially for a method to ascertain location and date of territory settlement without field observer limitations. Prior field-observer estimates are likely biased towards older ages. Telemetry has previously ascertained first territory settlement, but not via a quantified repeatable measure based solely on telemetric records. Our primary goal was to derive analytical rules, via an algorithm based on satellite telemetric data to determine when a dispersing Golden Eagle <i>Aquila chrysaetos </i>had settled on (occupied) a prospective breeding territory, using 83 birds tagged as nestlings in Scotland. Our algorithm derived median record locations during a night, also compared median values over a longer time span, and processed records to confirm the spatial and temporal stability that was expected when a territory was occupied. All 17 birds deemed as algorithmically settled were confirmed by visual plot checks. Field work further validated territory occupation in all 14 of the 17 territories where field observations were possible; confirming egg-laying and chick-rearing in some instances. Many tagged birds were not deemed algorithmically to have settled on a territory, despite comparable or greater age. As a research tool, any current telemetric method is skewed away from older settlement ages due to technological lifespans which will hopefully improve.</p> <p><span>These files provide 16 example datasets as shapefiles: eight for birds deemed to have settled on a territory and eight deemed not to have settled on a territory. Due to required confidentiality on locations of nest sites actual coordinates have been geometrically processed to mask their true locations but the scaling is unaffected.</span></p>

This data set (ATL02) contains science-unit-converted time-ordered telemetry data, calibrated for instrument effects, downlinked from the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS) instrument on board the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) observatory. The data are used by the ATLAS/ICESat-2 Science Investigator-led Processing System (SIPS) for system-level, quality control analysis and as source data for ATLAS/ICESat-2 Level-2 products and Precision Orbit Determination (POD) and Precision Pointing Determination (PPD) computations.

The Lunar Prospector merged telemetry data set is a result of comparing the two Lunar Prospector telemetry data streams and selecting one of them. The Lunar Prospector raw telemetry data downlink stream contains data transmitted in real-time and data that was collected about 50 minutes prior and stored on the spacecraft. The merged telemetry data set contains raw science and instrument engineering data acquired by all of the science instruments (Gamma Ray, Neutron, and Alpha Particle Spectrometers, and the Magnetometer and Electron Reflectometer), along with spacecraft engineering data.

Each Level-1A (L1A) granule incorporates all radiometer data downlinked from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) spacecraft for one specific half orbit. The data are scaled instrument counts consisting of the first four raw moments of the fullband channel (vertical and horizontal polarizations); the complex cross-correlations of the fullband channel; and the 16 subband channels (vertical and horizontal polarizations).

This data set contains instrument packet files (IPFs) from the Plasma Science experiment (PLS) onboard the Galileo spacecraft during the Jupiter orbital operations phase. This data set is a very raw, binary form. It is archived for completeness only. There is another PDS data set (GO-J-PLS-3-RDR-FULLRES-V1.0) that contains all of the plasma detector counts in a form that is much easier to work with. The primary advantage of this data set is that it contains instrument housekeeping and engineering data in addition to the counts.

Each item in the packet is converted from data numbers to dimensional values. The data set contains all science packets for the entire Cassini mission. The data set includes telemetry data from the instrument checkout periods, SOI and the entire Saturn tour.Each standard data product is organized as a spread sheet with one row for each packet. Each column in the spread sheet contains the contents of one item in the telemetry packet, converted from data number to dimensional quantities where appropriate.
