PAsCAL WP6 Pilot 5 Vulnerable Travellers in Connected Transport Environments Video

<p>A summary video documenting and introducing the activities of pilot 5 of the PAsCAL real-world pilots. The part of the pilot which is documented in the video took place within the wider Madrid transport network between May and November 2021. The participants tested the Apertum mobile application (https://apertum.world/) and three groups of potential users were recruited:</p> <ol> <li>Elderly citizens (65+ years), via the non-for-profit organisation Nadiesolo;</li> <li>Paraplegic citizens with permanent mobility constraints and in many cases reduced hand mobility, via the medical centre FLM (Fundaci&oacute;n Lesionado Medular);</li> <li>Citizens who were confronted with temporary mobility constraints (e.g., carrying heavy luggage, baby strollers, using crutches or wheelchairs to simulate temporary injuries).</li> </ol>

PAsCAL WP6 Pilot 5 Experience of Vulnerable Travellers in Connected Transport Environments

<p>These three&nbsp;datasets were collected within the context of the PAsCAL research project between May and November 2021. Each&nbsp;survey included a different user group and all activities were conducted in different places:</p> <ol> <li>Apertum Testing: 165 individual testers used the Apertum (https://apertum.world/) mobile application for step-free public transport information. These participants consisted of elderly persons (65+ years old), paraplegic users and persons with temporary mobility constraints (like injuries or persons who use baby strollers or heavy luggage). The testing took place in 3 different locations and followed 3 different scenarios to ensure that the routing or departure point of the user does not influence their acceptance of the CAV solution;</li> <li>UI-UX Testing: The same application was tested by 20 additional persons (half of them digital natives and half of them digital nomads) in Madrid, Spain. For the UI-UX testing, a few standard tasks were defined and the participants were able to familiarise themselves with the application for 30 minutes before the testing started. The WAMMI methodology was applied, consisting of a survey that is to the point.</li> <li>Focus Discussion Groups: The FDGs took place across 4 cities in Italy (Rome, Bologna, Milan and Naples) and included a diverse range of 51 blind and partially sighted persons. The participants attended a short briefing about autonomous and connected mobility and shared their experiences, opinions and attitudes freely before completing a survey to report on their freedom of travel, their needs and attitudes towards CAVs.</li> </ol> <p>In order to analyse the answers given to the questions, it is&nbsp;recommended to consult also the &quot;PAsCAL WP6 Pilots Surveys&quot; dataset, which contains all questions and possible answers.</p>

Data for: Genomic vulnerability to climate change in Quercus acutissima, a dominant tree species in East Asian deciduous forests

<p><span>Understanding the evolutionary processes that shape the landscape of genetic variation and influence the response of species to future climate change is critical for biodiversity conservation. Here, we sampled </span><span>27</span><span> populations across the distribution range of a dominant forest tree, <em>Quercus</em> <em>acutissima</em>, in East Asia, and applied genome-wide analyses to track the evolutionary history and predict the fate of populations under future climate. We found two genetic groups (East and West) in <em>Q</em>. <em>acutissima</em> that diverged during the Pliocene. </span><span>We also found</span><span> a heterogeneous landscape of genomic variation in this species</span><span>, which may have been shaped by </span><span>population demography and </span><span>linked selections</span><span>.</span><span> Using genotype-environment association analyses, we identified climate-associated SNPs in a diverse set of genes and functional categories, indicating a model of polygenic adaptation in <em>Q</em>. acutissima<em>.</em> We further estimated three genetic offset metrics to quantify genomic vulnerability of this species to climate change due to the complex interplay </span><span>between</span><span> local adaptation</span><span> and</span><span> migration</span><span>.</span><span> We found that marginal populations are under </span><span>higher</span><span> risk of local extinction</span><span> because of</span><span> future climate change</span><span>, and may not be able to track </span><span>suitable habitats </span><span>to maintain the gene-environment relationships observed under the current climate.</span><span> We also detected higher reverse genetic offsets in northern China, indicating that genetic variation currently present in the whole range of <em>Q</em>. <em>acutissima</em> may not adapt to future climate conditions in this area.</span> <span>Overall, this study</span><span> illustrates how evolutionary</span><span> processes </span><span>have</span><span> shaped the landscape of genomic variation, and</span><span> provides a comprehensive genome-wide view of climate maladaptation in <em>Q</em>. <em>acutissima</em>.</span></p>

Vulnerability of estuarine systems in the contiguous United States to water quality change under future climate and land-use

<p>Changes in climate and land-use and land-cover (LULC) are expected to influence surface water runoff and nutrient characteristics of estuarine watersheds, but the extent to which estuaries are vulnerable to altered nutrient loading under future conditions is poorly understood. The present work aims to address this gap through the development of a new vulnerability assessment framework that accounts for (1) estuarine exposure to projected changes in total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) loads as a function of LULC and climate change under several scenarios to altered nutrient loads, (2) sensitivity (i.e., how responsive estuaries are to altered nutrient loads), and (3) adaptive capacity (i.e., how the socio-ecological system can use existing resources to reduce the impacts associated with increased exposure). The framework was applied to 112 estuaries and their contributing watersheds across the contiguous U.S., specifically to look at regional variability in estuarine vulnerability to nutrient loading. Study findings revealed that the largest increases in estuarine nutrient loads are expected in the North and South Atlantic regions and eastern Gulf of Mexico, while the lowest increase is expected in the North and South Pacific regions and the western Gulf of Mexico. However, the North Atlantic and the South Pacific had the highest adaptive capacity, which could potentially counteract the effects of LULC and climate change on nutrient loads. Our findings illustrate the benefits of integrating natural and socio-ecological factors to identify opportunities to develop adaptation plans and policies to mitigate ecological degradation in vitally important estuaries. A<a href="https://lisemontefiore.shinyapps.io/estuarine_vulnerability/"> web-based application</a> has been developed to visualize and download the data.</p>

Life on the edge: A new toolbox for population-level climate change vulnerability assessments

<p>Global change is impacting biodiversity across all habitats on earth. New selection pressures from changing climatic conditions and other anthropogenic activities are creating heterogeneous ecological and evolutionary responses across many species' geographic ranges. Yet we currently lack standardised and reproducible tools to effectively predict the resulting patterns in species vulnerability to declines or range changes.</p> <p>We developed an informatic toolbox that integrates ecological, environmental and genomic data and analyses (environmental dissimilarity, species distribution models, landscape connectivity, neutral and adaptive genetic diversity and Genotype-Environment Associations) to estimate population vulnerability. In our toolbox, functions and data structures are coded in a standardised way so that it is applicable to any species or geographic region where appropriate data are available, for example individual or population sampling and genomic datasets (e.g. RAD-seq, ddRAD-seq, whole genome sequencing data) representing environmental variation across the species geographic range.</p> <p>We apply our toolbox to a georeferenced genomic dataset for the East African spiny reed frog (<em>Afrixalus fornasini</em>) to predict population vulnerability, as well as demonstrating that range loss projections based on adaptive variation can be accurately reproduced using data for two European bat species (<em>Myotis escalerai</em>, and <em>M. crypticus</em>).</p> <p>Our framework sets the stage for large scale, multi-species genomic datasets to be leveraged in a novel climate change vulnerability framework to quantify intraspecific differences in genetic diversity, local adaptation, range shifts and population vulnerability based on exposure, sensitivity, and range shift potential.</p>

Spatiotemporal impacts of ideology and social vulnerability on COVID-19 for the United States

<p><span>In early 2020, the Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) rapidly spread across the United States, exhibiting significant geographic </span><span>variability. While several studies have examined the predictive relationships of differing factors on COVID-19 deaths, few have </span><span>looked at spatiotemporal variation at refined geographic scales. The objective of this analysis is to examine county-level </span><span>spatiotemporal variation of COVID-19 deaths in association with socioeconomic, health, demographic, and political factors, </span><span>using regionalized multivariate regression as well as nationwide geographically weighted random forest (GWRF) models. </span><span>Regionalized regression results across three time windows—pandemic onset until May 2021, May 2021 through November </span><span>2021, and December 2021 until April 2022—suggest that existing measures of social vulnerability for disaster preparedness </span><span>(SVI) are associated with a higher degree of mortality from COVID-19. In comparison, GWRF models provide a more robust </span><span>evaluation of feature importance and prediction, exposing the importance of local features, such as obesity, which is obscured </span><span>by regional delineation. Overall, GWRF results indicate this more nuanced modeling strategy is useful for capturing the diverse </span><span>spatial and temporal nature of the COVID-19 pandemic.</span></p>

<p>This record contains the <strong>study datasets, descriptive results and questionnaires</strong> from the paper &quot;Shedding Light on CVSS Scoring Inconsistencies: A User-Centric Study on Evaluating Widespread Security Vulnerabilities&quot; by Julia Wunder, Andreas Kurtz, Christian Eichenm&uuml;ller, Freya Gassmann and Zinaida Benenson to appear in Proceedings of the 45th IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy (2024).</p> <p>The pseudonymous <strong>datasets</strong> contain data from the online surveys (main study with 196 participants and follow-up study with 59 participants). Data from: Species-specific ecological traits, phylogeny, and geography underpin vulnerability to population declines for North American birds

<p>Species declines and extinctions characterize the Anthropocene. Determining species vulnerability to decline, and where and how to mitigate threats, are paramount for effective conservation. We hypothesized that species with shared ecological traits also share threats, and therefore may experience similar population trends. Here, we used a Bayesian modeling framework to test whether phylogeny, geography, and 22 ecological traits predict regional population trends for 380 North American bird species. Groups like blackbirds, warblers, and shorebirds, as well as species occupying Bird Conservation Regions at more extreme latitudes in North America, exhibited negative population trends, while groups such as ducks, raptors, and waders, as well as species occupying more inland Bird Conservation Regions, exhibited positive trends. Specifically, we found that in addition to phylogeny and breeding geography, multiple ecological traits contributed to explaining variation in regional population trends for North American birds. Furthermore, we found that regional trends and the relative effects of migration distance, phylogeny, and geography differ between shorebirds, songbirds, and waterbirds. Our work provides evidence that multiple ecological traits correlate with North American bird population trends, but that the individual effects of these ecological traits in predicting population trends often vary between different groups of birds. Moreover, our results reinforce the notion that variation in avian population trends is controlled by more than phylogeny and geography, where closely-related species within one region can show unique population trends due to differences in their ecological traits. We recommend that regional conservation plans, i.e. one-size-fits-all plans, be implemented only for bird groups with population trends under strong phylogenetic or geographic controls. We underscore the need to develop species-specific research and management strategies for other groups, like songbirds, that exhibit high variation in their population trends and are influenced by multiple ecological traits.</p>

Data from: Phenotypic plasticity and genetic diversity shed light on endemism of rare Boechera perstellata and its potential vulnerability to climate warming

<p>Premise of the study: The rapid pace of contemporary environmental change puts many species at risk, especially rare species constrained by limited capacity to adapt or migrate due to low genetic diversity and/or fitness. But the ability to acclimate can provide another way to persist through change. We compared the capacity of rare <em>Boechera perstellata</em> (Braun's rockcress) and widespread <em>B. laevigata</em> to acclimate to change.</p> <p>Methods: We investigated the phenotypic plasticity of growth, biomass allocation, and leaf morphology of individuals of <em>B. perstellata</em> and <em>B. laevigata</em> propagated from seed collected from several populations throughout their ranges in a growth chamber experiment to assess their capacity to acclimate. Concurrently, we assessed the genetic diversity of sampled populations using 17 microsatellite loci to assess evolutionary potential.</p> <p>Key results: Plasticity was limited in both rare <em>B. perstellata</em> and widespread <em>B. laevigata</em>, but differences in the plasticity of root traits between species suggest that <em>B. perstellata</em> may have less capacity to acclimate to change. In contrast to its widespread congener, <em>B. perstellata</em> exhibited no plasticity in response to temperature and weaker plastic responses to water availability. As expected, <em>B. perstellata</em> also had lower levels of observed heterozygosity than <em>B. laevigata</em> at the species level, but population-level trends in diversity measures were inconsistent due to high heterogeneity among <em>B. laevigata</em> populations.</p> <p>Conclusions: Overall, the ability of phenotypic plasticity to broadly explain the rarity of <em>B. perstellata</em> vs. commonness of <em>B. laevigata </em>is limited. However, some contextual aspects of our plasticity findings compared with its relatively low genetic variability may shed light on the narrow range and habitat associations of <em>B. perstellata</em> and suggest its vulnerability to climate warming due to acclimatory and evolutionary constraints.</p>
